ET MAGAZINE - DECEMBER 2021

While people throughout the country are beginning to move about their daily lives once again, things are certainly far from ‘back to normal’. We are inching our way back to activities and occasions of all kinds. As we move into the holiday season, some will be planning traditional festivities while others will be planning for the merriment to take place right at home. How does this impact holiday fashion trends for this transitional year? Let’s look at the options at our fingertips. Holiday-wear is known for its sparkle …its celebratory flare. For those getting ready to head out for holiday parties, you will be thrilled to see slip dresses with sequins, pearls, or feathered trim. Earrings, purses, and pumps are being shown with similar embellishments; while any one can easily add pop to your ensemble, don’t go overboard. For example, if your dress is edged with feathered trim, avoid accessories with the same. It will overwhelm the look and diminish the effect. The same holds true for sequins and pearls. Choose one for your statement piece and let the rest of your ensemble serve to round out your look. If you are a fan of leather, you will find plenty to choose from. Whether your preference is pants, dress, or jacket, leather is a top choice this season – in traditional black and brown, along with several other color options. Corsets are another holiday trend being shown by many of today’s top designers. Corset dresses and tops are available, which can be paired with skirts

or trousers. You’ll find them in leather, lace, sheers, and a whole host of fabrics choose from. Heading to a small home gathering? Your top choices are patterned fancy trousers with one of the many soft, fluffy sweaters being shown. Try a wider leg option in a shimmery fabric with a sweater that fits close at the waist for a stylish, elegant look that is perfectly comfortable. Not a fan of sweaters? Lavish blouses in silks and other rich fabrics are readily available. Rather than a high heeled option, pair your outfit with plush, soft shoes that have all the comfort of your favorite slippers. If staying in is your plan, you’ll be happy to know that designers have you covered. Cozy and fabulous is the theme that runs through the options you’ll find. Try a 2-piece knit ensemble that will look charming and feel so soft on your skin. Perhaps you’d prefer a pair of swanky pajamas in silk, satin, or with an oh-so- soft faux fur edging. Holiday themed patterns abound, giving you endless choices for the perfect pair of pjs. No matter what look you’re going for, you’ll find plenty of red, black, winter white, purple, and, of course, silver and gold. Whether your holidays will be spent out and about, at a small gathering, or staying in and snuggling up, think glitz, glam, and cozy for the perfect find.

the weather is not as brutal, an outdoor jog in the fresh air may be exactly what you need. Whether jogging, walking, jumping, or strength training, ankle and foot stability are crucial. I like the Alphatorsion 2.0 Adidas. Made with engineered mesh, it hugs the foot securely, yet is breathable and flexible. The rubber sole has a grood grip and offers a springy bounce, making it a great running shoe. You may not choose this sneaker for lifting in the gym, however, it’s a great, affordable, and even stylish choice for home workouts. 5 - An exercise app. Free, inexpensive or pricey, there are tons of workout apps available. When you get bored or need a more intense challenge, these apps are essential. You’ll learn new exercises, be guided through a HIIT or strength training workout, and so much more. Pick one or ten!

kettlebell you can work your entire body. You can burn fat, build muscle, target specific areas, and work up a sweat to brag about. A kettlebell workout will also improve aerobic capacity, increase strength, build explosive power, and even improve balance. An adjustable kettlebell is a great option, it takes up hardly any space and you can increase intensity. You can go with an affordable Amazon find or the Bowflex kettlebell- which ranges from 8-40 lbs. 2 - Jump rope. A jump rope will take the place of your gym’s cardio machine. That’s right, jumping rope burns a ton of calories, increases the heart rate, and assists with hand-eye coordination. And, no need to jump rope for 20 minutes; you can jump for 30 seconds (at a moderate pace), or 20 seconds (fast paced), followed by a 30 second rest. Repeat for 10-12 minutes. 3 - Ankle Weights. One of my favorite tools for a lower body burn. Adding ankle weights to exercises like leg lifts, kickbacks, donkey kicks, step- ups, and V-ups, will give you a burn beyond your imagination. Portable, small and inexpensive, ankle weights are a must for targeting the legs, glutes, and core.

Let’s face it, when it’s cold and dark outside it can be difficult leaving the comfort of your home, especially for an activity like going to the gym. Winter has a way of sucking the motivation right out of us, which can impact our health and body goals. Just because the weather keeps us inside, doesn’t mean you have to skip a workout; you can get a killer workout without leaving the house. Expensive equipment is not necessary, although there are a few tools that will help make a successful home workout. Lose the excuses (and the weight) this winter with my top five tools for an ultimate home workout.

1 - Kettlebells. With just one

ShopMom and Pop: The Backbone of the Community

I t should be evident that the post pandemic era has crushed local businesses all across our beautiful is- land. Combined with the onslaught of E-commerce, the Mom and Pop shops that built our communities, con- tinue to be challenged. Thank goodness, there is a shim- mering light, as many continue to muster up the strength to keep fighting for their place in local markets. Selmer’s Petland has been Long Island’s favorite pet destination for eighty-two years, making them the oldest family-owned of its kind in the U.S. It all began when Bruno and Helen Selmer moved to Huntington, into a small house on two-lane, Jericho Turnpike. In 1941, Bruno decided to enclose the front porch of their home and start selling a small selection of pets and supplies. He even renovated the garage and created a space for breeding dogs and birds too. After World War II, families began to migrate to Long Island and as communities grew, so went the de- mand for Selmer’s Petland. Before long, Selmer’s added another building to the front and side of the house. As business flourished from the Long Island boom, Selmer’s became known for carrying the finest and healthiest pets and supplies around. Today, owner Al Selmer (son of Bruno and Helen), along with his daughter Jessica, take pride in carrying the traditions of this successful family-owned business. “As the headquarters for all things pet-related, we enjoy serving and meeting the needs of our customers. Our three floors are fully stocked with merchandise that is designed to meet the demand of both our live-stock and supplies,” says Al. After 80 years of serving customers in Nassau and Suffolk County, Selmer’s has become the most trusted

source in the business. Whether you are coming in to add a new member to your family, or visiting to shop for food and supplies, the friendly and knowledgeable staff at Selmer’s is eager to please. From the finest birds, fish, puppies, reptiles, and small animals to the best groom- ing services, supplies and more, Selmer’s will not disap- point. Selmer’s has a wide selection of American Kennel Club, American Canine Association as well as designer crossbreeds, all of which come from legitimate breeders. You can be assured that the staff at Selmer’s has been professionally trained in pet socialization and provide daily exercise routines to keep their pets in excellent health. This includes grooming and health checks to en- sure the well-being of all dogs. To be sure you get your new puppy off on the right track, Selmer’s partners with licensed veterinarians and offers full packages to make certain that your puppy gets the proper care from the very beginning. Selmer’s carries just about every kind of pet imagi- nable including outdoor and indoor freshwater and aquarium fish, hamsters, chinchillas, guinea pigs, ferrets, rabbits, mice and gerbils. If you are looking to bring more thrill and excitement into your life, you can check out their full floor of reptiles: snakes, bearded dragons, lizards, iguanas, chameleons, geckos, tortoises, frogs and more. So, it is likely that Selmer’s Petland served your grand- parents and now it is your turn. Awarded Long Island’s First Place-Best Pet Store six years in a row, at Selmer’s, they are committed to serving families across Long Is- land and are here to assist you in finding the perfect family pet.

Just because warm weather is on hiatus doesn’t mean we have to be without the joys and beauty of plants during the winter. While there isn’t much to do outside in the garden during the cold months, your green thumb can be put to use indoors. Did you know that many traditional annual plants, especially those in hanging baskets, can easily be converted to house plants until next summer? Many varieties of vines, herbs, and potted tropical trees (such as palm and hibiscus) will prevail in a sunny indoor spot. They also provide many health benefits while your home gets a touch of green all year long and the plants

adequate sunlight and

water while indoors. Fertilize regularly; oftentimes, plants will go through a semi-

dormant period during the winter. Remember that the days are shorter and shadows longer, so keep an eye on how much sunlight the plant receives each day. If you notice yellowing leaves despite adequate water, increase the sun exposure by moving the plant to different locations. Double check that the angle of the window and sun isn’t accidentally burning the leaves. To help keep the shape of hanging plants, consider a plant stand, where the pot can rest off the ground and the vines/leaves can drape naturally. This will minimize breakage and reduce the risk of the plant being malformed when it’s put back outside in

continue to grow and mature. So, when spring rolls around, they’ll look full and lush. There’s not much to it: simply bring plants in prior to the first frost, and ensure they receive

the spring. Remember to harden off the plant before returning it back outside full time.

Have a wonderful holiday season and Happy New Year!

Each season brings a new opportunity to create or reinvent your traditions and style. This is one recipe that needs no change! Just one bite and you too will know exactly why I have continued to send out this beloved family recipe to you each year at Christmas time! Merry Christmas, Happy Holiday’s, Happy New Year, And Peace on Earth! xoxo Denise

3 cups white rice (I use Carolina long grain or Arborio) 4 large eggs separated (or more if needed) 2 ½ cups of grated cheese (Locatelli Pecorino Romano) 1T butter TO COAT BALLS FOR FRYING: 4 egg whites beaten with a splash of cold water 2 cups flour

MEAT SAUCE OR BOLOGNESE: (you can make this ahead of time and refrigerate for days until ready) 1 ½ lbs ground beef and sausage meat (if desired) ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil 1 chopped Vidalia onion 14 oz can San Marzano whole tomatoes blended 1 6 oz can of tomato paste ½ t red pepper flakes Salt and fresh black pepper Fresh basil (4-5 leaves, chopped) Pinch of oregano Frozen, small tender, baby peas 1 ½ cups or as desired 1 lb fresh mozzarella cheese cut into small chunks Brown onion and meat in skillet until brown and crumbly, season with salt and pepper. Add tomatoes and paste, cook on low stirring occasionally. The sauce should be thick and dense. Cool. Add frozen peas.

2 cups Italian flavored bread crumbs Deep fryer with vegetable oil for frying Salt to taste

Bring the broth and butter to a boil. Add rice and bring back to a boil, then lower to simmer. Stir constantly, if it becomes too dry, add a bit more broth or water. Cook until all liquid is absorbed and rice is tender but a bit (al dente). Mix in cheese, the yellow beaten eggs along with salt and pepper. Cool. You may refrigerate until ready. Sometimes if I have leftover, I add a tiny bit of marinara to the rice for color and flavor. Refrigerate until cool. (You can do a day or two in advance.) Scoop rice into hand - make an opening or a well and stuff 1 ½ t of meat sauce and peas into center with a small chunk of fresh mozzarella cheese. Close back up, rolling gently into a ball with both hands. Roll into flour on all sides, then into beaten egg whites, and finally into breadcrumbs (constantly shaping and rolling between your hands). Note: You may have to wash hands in-between steps a few times. Place on flat cookie sheet until ready for frying. You can fry 5-6 at one time until golden (approx. 4-5 minutes). Drain on paper towel. Sprinkle a bit of salt, try to save some!

FOR THE RICE: 6 cups low sodium chicken broth 2 T extra virgin olive oil 1 pinch of Saffron (if desired)

hosting at the house. Generally, I’ll look to experienced food stylists and Pinterest boards for inspiration. Get creative! I usually add dried fruits, fresh fruits, olives, sweet and spicy peppers, fresh honeycomb – the list goes on and on. Also, incorporate your event into the board. I personally would use cheese to spell out the year ahead, and/or include gold touches. Lastly, I’ll always include caviar on one (or all) of the boards – it screams New Year’s Eve. Party main dishes can be easy if you opt to use your favorite cooking vessels such as the crockpot, Instant Pot, and/or broiler. For me personally, I use 2-3 crockpots and prepare a pulled pork or chicken, and a pasta dish. Pulled meats pair with a taco station, and pasta pairs with a salad station. Easy cleanup, fun delivery, and buffet style. Once again, get creative – and work with your guests’ preferences. If you’re pressed for time, a shrimp cocktail platter goes a long way. This is the perfect time of year to gather with family and friends (safely) and spend time together – regardless of your resolutions. Get creative with the menu, décor, and presentation. Remember to

There is nothing I enjoy more than hosting a party at my house. I love preparing charcuterie boards, cooking a surplus of main dishes and sides, and decorating the space with innovative Pinterest finds. One of my favorite days to host is New Year’s Eve. It’s casual, lively, and encourages a table filled with appetizers and luxurious touches like caviar. Plus, it’s the perfect way to kick off the new year with family and friends. Let’s talk food. For this holiday, I usually prepare a long table (buffet-style) and present fun, interactive finger foods such as nachos, homemade pretzel bites, deviled eggs (with caviar), sliders, and of course wings. I prefer to make a variety of wings, such as buffalo, lemon and parsley, and lemon pepper. As a rule of thumb, I’ll have some meat-free, gluten-free, dairy- free, and keto options for those leaning into their new year resolutions. Pretzel bites may come with a dairy-free mustard dipping sauce. Nachos will use corn chips, instead of flour. And wings will be pre- marinated, grilled, and finished in the oven. As a fan of deviled eggs, I usually have these on hand for those looking for a higher protein snack. Look at your guest list, ask for allergies & preferences, and go from there. Let’s be real, no party would be complete without a charcuterie board, or a cheese & fruit board. I have invested in an assortment of beautiful olive wood boards, some engraved, all perfect for
