come across has more stubble, a longer beard, or an unusual mustache. This year, the men at Farmingdale Physical Therapy West will be joining in the hairy phenomenon. Do you know why? Have you ever asked one of these hairy gentlemen what prompted them to “let it grow”? Wonder no more...the answer is cancer prevention & awareness. In the fall of 2009 “No-Shave.org” was founded to help raise awareness and funds for the prevention and treatment of cancer. Since then the movement has grown and gained national attention. The movement encourages participants to “grow awareness by embracing our hair, which many cancer patients lose, and letting it grow wild and free.” Nearly half of cancer diagnosis and deaths are preventable; No-shave November seeks to increase awareness in the general public of the roles our choices and lifestyles have in developing cancer or detecting it early. “The big C”...cancer...it’s a word no one wants to hear, but it’s a word that over 1.5 million people in this country face down every year. Cancer has

touched nearly everyone in some form; either you are a cancer warrior yourself or you know someone battling cancer, or you have lost a loved one to cancer. Our male staffers have committed to putting down their razor in order to raise your awareness this month. We have partnered with the No-Shave November Foundation to help raise money this November for their partners: “Prevent Cancer Foundation”, “Fight Colorectal Cancer”, and “St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital”. We simply “mustache” you to please stop by our Bethpage or Ronkonkomaoffices, sayhianddropyourshaving money into the jar at the front desk, or head over to our fundraising website, https://no-shave.org/ member/FPTW to make a donation. Follow us on Facebook and Instagram throughout the month of November for updates on the “growth” in our office. And brace yourself for some hair-raising photos of our staff in next month’s newsletter!

STAND UP TO SCIATICA

Do you experience pain in the buttock, leg, or even your foot? If so, you may be experiencing sciatica. Sciatica is a common form of back and leg pain that is often misunderstood by sufferers. People frequently have questions about what sciatica is, why it occurs and how to find relief from the intense pain it can cause from the low back down to the feet. If you are suffering from sciatica, it is important to find its root cause. Many people often think an x-ray or expensive MRI is first needed to figure out what is causing pain. Having a lot of tests doesn’t mean you will find its root cause. Recent studies show that nearly 1 million of MRIs done for sciatica fail to find a treatable cause. With a new imaging technique called magnetic resonance neurography, 69% of the patients were found to have a trapped sciatic nerve deep in the buttock by a muscle called the piriformis. It is known that in about 25% of the general population, the sciatic nerve pierces through the piriformis muscle and can be susceptible to abnormal pressure and irritation. Why Does Sciatica Occur? If there are changes in posture, muscle strength or pelvic alignment, the nerve can be compressed which leads to the quite common low back and sciatic nerve pains. The sciatic nerve is the longest and largest nerve in your body. It even reaches down to the foot and therefore, can be irritated anywhere along its path. With sciatica, the consequent ache can be felt anywhere from the base of the spine, the buttocks or the back of the thigh and legs. Even tingling sensations in the toes can be attributed at times to the impingement of the sciatic nerve. www.fptwest.com

Physical Therapists Are The Mechanics Of Your Body

The treatments relieved the pain!

“If not for the wonderful staff at Farmingdale Physical Therapy West, I would not still be doing the work I love. I have severe back problems which made it very difficult to walk without pain or to even stand up straight. The staff taught me how to exercise to increase my strength and relieve the pain to maintain what they had done for me. The treatments relieved the pain and loosened the stiffness. My foot was also dragging, which made me more prone to trip and fall accidents. I am able to continue working and caring

NOVEMBER TIPS OF THEMONTH Stairs are generally the fastest route up...the average person takes 10-20 seconds to climb a flight of stairs, however it takes an elevator on average 37 seconds to go up one story...so much for saving time in the elevator. Although it’s not a great calorie burner (only burning about 2.5 calories per flight), it does tone and strengthen butt, thigh, and calf muscles as well as lower “bad” (LDL) cholesterol. A quick trip up the stairs releases endorphins which improve mood and lower stress levels. So instead of wasting time waiting by the elevator, next time, do yourself a favor and take the stairs to a better you! There’s a “right” way to sleep A good night’s sleep is crucial to your health and well-being, but what if the way you sleep is negating the benefits of 8 hours of slumber. The key is spinal alignment...when you lay down in bed you should be in the same spinal alignment as when you are standing in good posture. Ear in line with the shoulder and hip, normal curve to neck and lower back, knees shoulder width apart. You can achieve this through the use of proper pillow height and positioning.

SIDE SLEEPER Firm, medium sized pillow under the head only. Pillow between the knees.

SUFFERING FROM ARTHRITIS?

6 Food Choices to Help Ease Arthritis Pain

Dear Valued Client, Here are some tips to relieve arthritis pain in joints with healthy food choices: 1. Broccoli, Brussels sprouts and cabbage. These veggies are part of the cruciferous family, and they are full of a compound called sulforaphane, which helps slow cartilage damage in joints due to osteoarthritis.Try adding broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, kale or cauliflower to your salad or stir-fry.

2. Fatty fish. Fatty fish like salmon, tuna, trout and mackerel are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which help fight inflammation. Try adding fish to your diet a couple of times a week. If you’re not a big fan of fish, ask your doctor about taking an omega-3 supplement.

3. Garlic. Garlic is a member of the allium family—which also includes onions and leeks. These items contain a compound called diallyl disulfide that may help with a number of diseases—including arthritis.

4. Tart cherries. Some people with arthritis have found relief from products made from tart cherries. The ingredient in cherries that helps with joint symptoms is the same one that gives this fruit its red color—anthocyanin.

5. Turmeric. One of the best-researched inflammation fighters isn’t a food at all, but a spice.Tumeric contains a compound called curcumin. The compound has been used for centuries in India to ward off inflammatory diseases. You’ll find this yellow spice in Indian cuisines—particularly curries.

6. Vitamin C. Antioxidants in vitamin C may slow the progression of OA. You can get vitamin C from strawberries, kiwi, pineapple, or cantaloupe. However, we warn you against taking supplements with much higher doses than 65 to 85 milligrams, because in large doses vitamin C can increase the risk of kidney stones.
