Getting to Know You - Maritza Torres Our Hard-Working Housekeeper
By MA Harlacker Meet the person responsible for our extremely clean and sanitized MIYC – Maritza Torres! Maritza was born in Havana, Cuba, and earned her bachelor’s degree there. She has two children, ages 29 and 17, loves to cook and listen to music, and currently resides in Naples, FL. Her prior job experiences include working as a housekeeper and at Burger King, and as a supervisor at Bayfront Inn. When not at the Club, she enjoys spending time with her family, listening to folk music, reading adventure books, watching comedy movies, and sampling Italian food. Maritza strives for a healthy lifestyle and improvement in her English. The causes she focuses on are child abuse and Breast Cancer Awareness. And keeping us all clean and safe at the Yacht Club!

Commodore I’m sure everyone was as disappointed as Cinda and I were with the cancellation of the Change of Watch and Commodore’s Ball, yet it was necessary to protect the health and safety of our members and staff. Please know we’re working with Member Events to determine the best opportunity to reschedule, and will communicate plans as they come together. On the positive side, we still have a couple of big events coming up, beginning with Boaters Night February 3rd. This month we’re departing from our usual format in order to honor and celebrate our soon to be departing friends, the Marrs. Please join us! Then, on February 6 th we will hold the Annual Blessing of the Fleet. Arrangements for this event are coming together nicely, so whether you’re a Captain, a crew member, or a member who would simply like to view the ceremony from shore, don’t forget to call-in your reservations for this day of festivities. Please watch for details and reservation information for all upcoming Bridge events, which you will find in this Anchor Lines edition, as well as upcoming targeted eBlasts. Gentle Members, Remember the Great MIYC Wine Survey? You spoke, we listened! Members want wine, more wine, great-tasting wine, by the glass and by the bottle. So, your Staff and Members are working hard to bring that about. Last month, a small group of Members participated in a Working Wine Tasting in which representatives from Southern Glazer Distributing and Taub Family Selections brought an assortment of French and Italian wines to taste. From this tasting, we identified at least 2-3 favorite reds and whites to offer to Members. (By the way, some of those Members, when tasting, were heard to exclaim, “Oh, this is good!”, which leads me to think we could call ourselves “Wine-Oh’s”…) On the Sunset Cruise on January 27 th , Chef Bob and the team poured a French White Bordeaux and an Italian Red Bolgheri (Tuscan Blend) as Premium Wine Pairings, both of which were well received by the Sunset Cruisers. Therefore, we will likely see those wines appear on the new and improved MIYC Wine List. We will conduct more Working Wine Tastings, and we will also have some special Wine Tasting Events beginning in late March or early April, so that all Members can join in the hard work of tasting great wines and helping us select the best. It’s a tough job, but somebody’s got to do it, and if we all pitch in, I’m confident we can collectively come up with a Wine List everyone will love. Stay tuned for more details on Wine Tastings and Wine Events!

Chairman’s Report
I think that many of our members who spent the last several months up North have begun to migrate back to Florida. I think this is true because I am seeing more car carriers, more traffic on the island, and faces around town that I haven't seen for a while. And we are seeing a few more of our members back at the Club. However, we are not seeing Club usage at the level it was at this time last year. There are a few reasons for this. One is that we are not hosting the number of banquets we did at this time last year. Second is perhaps a perception that eating at the Club is a little routine or only for special events. And another reason is possibly a concern about the possible exposure to COVID at the Club. Let me address these points in reverse order. The Club continues to be one of the safest places for social gathering on Marco Island. While we did have two positive test results reported by staff at the end of January, we do not have an indication that any members were exposed. Our protocols for staff provide for masks and diligent cleaning and monitoring. That we have not had more examples of staff reporting a positive COVID test result is a tribute to the care and self- awareness of our staff! In addition, our COVID protocols provide for sufficient inside and outside seating to assure we do not have members dining in too close a proximity. And we do continue to ask our members and guests to wear masks when not eating or drinking. We do recognize that we need to continue to keep our menu offerings fresh and interesting. We are working on providing different dining opportunities on evenings when we do not have a previously scheduled event. One example recently implemented is the Light Fare Menu on Sunday evenings. We are also considering other special
offerings on weekday evenings to attract more usage of the Club throughout the week. Look for more information on these offerings soon! Finally, we are suffering a reduction in banquet business,
Dave Everitt Everitt
primarily due to the impact COVID has had on these types of events. The banquet business is an important supplement to our Club's operation. It provides additional income for staff and it also helps moderate our overall food cost ratio. We are reaching out to the larger hotels and other groups to see if there is banquet business that we have not been able to secure in the past. Increasing use of the Club is important element to help achieve our overall annual revenue targets. It also is important to provide more regular income for our staff. And at this time of year, we target maximizing the benefit of the seasonal nature of our local market. So, the next time you are thinking of dining out on a Wednesday or Thursday evening...or even when you are trying to find a place to get a bite on Sunday evening...be sure to include the Club in your consideration! Be sure to take a look at the Club calendar and sign up for our special events. And help our Club continue to be a desirable dining option for our club members. I look forward to seeing more of you at the Club! Dave Everitt

MIYC Membership
Membership – February 2021
I promised you a brief article last month as I knew the month of January was going to be a great month for us! Wait until you see how many new members we have! So here goes! Many of you have met Dr. Al and Kerri Pakalnis and their lovely daughter. They have been with us on a new homeowner Trial and have decided they will join us as Full Members! We’ve enjoyed having them at Christmas Eve as well as January’s Fine Dining. We’re welcoming Mike and Patti Hennessy and Ron Shapiro as new slip owners! Herb and Ginny Jermanok (Social) and Pat and Mary Wilkins (Full) are returning to us. New Three-Month Trial Members are Kasey and Sherry Hughes (Walker), as well as Merle and Nancy Worman , Emily Boynton and her brother Ted Feldon (great crooners at karaoke!) and Don and Gerri Knotternus . James Schumacher and Jennifer Porter (Full) joined the evening of Fine Dining brought in by Jackie and Dave Cox. Jeff and Pam Dufficy are joining us as new Equity Members from Massachusetts. They have purchased a home and will close in February. They checked us out online and felt that they would really enjoy our Club! Finally, Dan Bryant sent in his information and is joining us as a Full Member. So, if you are at the Club and you see a new face, please go up to introduce yourselves, wearing your mask, of course! Take care all and stay safe! If you are like Neil and me, we feel the safest place on the island to dine is the Club. I do hope you all agree.

MIYC Member Events
The Member Events in January signal a positive response by Members as we hosted a very successful Karaoke Night following Covid Protocols. Our Members sang their hearts out and the audience provided the applause. To make the evening even more special, Chef Bob served an Italian Feast with a made-to- order pasta bar. A spontaneous congratulatory party with a Champagne Toast was held on Friday January 8 following the Monday Night approval of the Riverside Marina by the Marco Island City Council. Members gathered for the first time this Season at the Burgee for drinks and speeches by Chairman Dave Everitt and several members. All members sat at tables and wore masks if they stood or walked to tables. Twilight Golf is always a winner with some twenty participants competing with three clubs and a putter for the January round. We’re looking forward to what Alice Jobe has on her agenda for February.
Next on the Events Calendar is a Super Bowl Party which will be held on Sunday, February 7. The event is held in the Burgee Bar in the open air with a casual menu. Patti Cohen is preparing the Super Bowl squares to heighten the excitement. On Sunday, February 14, we will host a romantic Valentine's Dinner and Dance. Rosetta Stone, a well- known South West Florida entertainer will be with us that evening. The dinner menu is top notch. Sign up now since space will be limited. Back by popular demand, Frank Del Pizzo will regale us on Comedy Night. At last year's event we had a sellout prompting us to find another date for Frank to keep us in stitches. Make sure to sign up for the February 27th event. I want to remind long-time members and new members of the many events at MIYC: The Book Club, organized by MA Harlacker, is held the last Thursday of each month. Check out the Mah Jongg run by Karena de Witt, Bridge by the Winterhalters and Canasta by Kimberly Porter. These games are held each week. Bridge is now also held one evening a month for couples with dinner to follow. Diana Winterhalter does the planning and Bob Winterhalter invites the men to join the daytime bridge one Wednesday a month. The Fishing Club, organized by Jeff Comeaux, meets once a month on a Thursday with a great group of enthusiasts. Water Aerobics is organized by Peggy Frazier and the workout at the MIMA pool is on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings. There are Wine and Dine Dinners with special wine pairings and haute cuisine each month...a member favorite event. The Bridge hosts a Day Cruise and a Sunset Cruise each month and the boat owners graciously invite all Full and Equity members to join them on their beautiful yachts. All these events are listed in the calendar which is sent to you at the beginning of each month by email; or, look on the Website under Member Central; or pick up a calendar in the lobby of the club.

As I sit here writing my letter to you on this sunny Wednesday morning, I glanced out my window only to see a beautiful dolphin enjoying the life only Florida has to offer us all. I have now been here three months, and I get up every day looking forward to coming to work here and being surrounded by an amazing membership and staff. Which brings me to a topic that has, in one way or another, impacted all our lives -- Covid-19.
Here at MIYC we all have and take a very important role in keeping one another safe and healthy. All employees, including kitchen staff, wear latex gloves and a face mask all the time. Our waitstaff has been issued more than one mask to make sure they have time to wash them properly. We have an intense cleaning and disinfecting program in place that is followed every day as well! We are doing our part and need all of you to do yours…. So, here is when I change course (nautical term). I ask each member, when coming to the Club, to be responsible. Please check in at the front desk and have your temperature taken. Please follow the COVID-19 protocol that has been laid out by the Board of Directors. By doing so, we will all together continue to make memories with our friends and loved ones in a safe and protected environment. All staff members have been tested. I have also set up a testing company to come to the Club to test members as well. Getting through these times will only bond us all closer. Let’s look to the future; let’s all stay positive; but most of all let’s all be proud of the membership and staff for making MIYC your home!!! On Saturday, January 9th a sellout crowd of 40 at the Club enjoyed a tour of US wineries with Robert Fairbrother from Winebow. Appetizers were served tableside with a dry Riesling from Seneca Lake, NY. The second course was oysters with a red bean gremolata and a basil conch fritter accompanied by a Chardonnay from Sonoma Coast, CA. Our third course was duck breast with a lovely sauce of drippings and cherries. A fruit forward Pinot Noir from the Willamette Valley of Oregon made a fantastic pairing. The entrée was Wagyu Beef with a Cabernet Sauvignon from the Columbia Valley of Washington. Dessert was a vanilla crème Brule with a dessert wine from Virginia. There will be no wine dinner in February as fine dining is scheduled on February 14 th , Valentine’s Day. Mark your calendar on March 6 th for our next Wine and Dine as Winebow and our Staff prepare another culinary extravaganza!

Boater’s Night This Boaters’ Night was a combination of Boating Awards Ceremony and a “roast” of outgoing Commodore Ray Rosenberg. Jim & Linda Marr won the Day/Sunset Cruise Boat of the Year; Jim & Jan Rich won the Extended Cruise Boat of the Year, and Geoff Walker received the Commodore Award. Ray was roasted/toasted by Bridge members and various club members.

A Toast at the Roast January 20, 2021 To Commodore Ray Rosenberg A man came to the Isle one day And moored his boat behind the bay. He built a house so warm and fair, He seemed content to linger there. But in this man there burned a fire He couldn’t simply just retire So what to do? That was the rub Until he found our own Yacht Club! He threw himself into the task The more he did, the more was asked He found his home in this our Isle And brought to us his winning style. He worked and planned and met and schmoozed He even found some time to cruise Just when it seemed he could do no more, That’s when he became our Commodore!
So raise your glass with me to say, That in the twilight of this day, For him we rise to tribute pay, Hooray for our beloved Ray!

Dinner started with a salad served at the tables. Then tables were called by number to choose items from the buffet, which was behind Plexiglas screens. Attendees pointed to what they wanted and staff placed it on their plate. Covid protocols requiring masks and distancing were followed. With A Twist
Chef Bob served “Made to Order” Pasta as part of the staff-served Italian Buffet. After dinner we enjoyed the fun of music and song with Janice Diaz, Southwest Florida’s premier DJ and Karaoke entertainer. Janice sang, played dance music and had her Karaoke music ready for those who wanted to join in.
Our sous chef, Johnny Riggs will be leaving MIYC to return to his home town in Michigan. Members of the kitchen and wait staff surprised Johnny with a musical number and a Chef Jacket covered in farewell messages.

Safety & Training
SAFETY AND TRAINING
In this issue I would like to discuss a vital part of boating safety that most boaters know about, but seldom use: the FLOAT PLAN. WHAT IS A FLOAT PLAN? A float plan is a summary of a boat’s journey, and details vital information such as boat description, passenger and crew list, onboard safety equipment, and planned route. This plan should be filed by a boater before a trip and shared with an assigned person/s who can alert the Coast Guard in case of emergency. A float plan can save the Coast Guard and other rescuing agencies valuable time and effort during search and rescue, increasing the chances of survival for those in distress. WHAT SHOUD BE INCLUDED IN A FLOAT PLAN? A float plan should be able to provide complete, pertinent information that can guide rescuers in quickly locating a boat and its passengers in distress. Here are the key headings that should be included in your float plan: 1. The Vessel Indicate the name of the boat, its size, color, year, make, unique features, communication equipment, engine, propulsion, and registration details. These can help rescuers recognize a boat and communicate with the crew faster. 2. The People Onboard Important information about the people onboard, including the captain, crew, and passengers, should be included in the float plan. This can include the captain’s personal communication device (e.g., marine radio) identifier and the crew/passengers’ emergency contact details. Rescuers can use this information to contact those onboard and also alert loved ones regarding search operations. 3. The Itinerary Provide a rundown of the boat’s expected route, including stopovers (if any), and the planned schedule of departures and arrivals. This knowledge can aid rescuers in tracing a boat’s journey in absence of other communication methods.

SAFETY AND TRAINING (CONT’D.)
4. Availability of Safety Equipment The float plan also serves as a good assessment tool for a boat’s emergency preparedness. This section helps boaters verify if there is sufficient safety equipment (e.g., personal flotation device and visual distress signals) that can help in giving out distress signals. 5. List of People Entrusted with Float Plan Filing a float plan is pointless unless shared with one or several people NOT ONBOARD the boat. Their names and contact details are included so that they can be updated by the boater if they departed the port and have safely returned; or if they encounter sudden changes in their itinerary. Does all of this seem a bit overwhelming? Well fear not! Both the Coast Guard and the Power Squadron, along with several other independent agencies, now offer online Float Plan Templates for your convenience. Simply type in “float plan for boating”, and several options will be available to you. Just fill out your template of choice and forward a copy to whomever you want. Still too difficult? Then download the “U. S. Coast Guard” app on your cell phone. Here you can not only file your float plan, but also request a safety check, review safety equipment, see NOAA buoys, review Rules of the Road, report hazards, and request Emergency Assistance, just to name a few options. It doesn’t get any easier than that, and who knows, it may one day just save your life!

A q u a f i t a t M I Y C Aquafit classes take place at the MIMA pool at 10am on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Don't miss this opportunity to enjoy water aerobics - a low-impact activity that takes the pressure off your bones, joints and muscles. Water also offers natural resistance, which can help strengthen your muscles and you can add resistance devices to burn more calories! Exercising in the pool provides the toning and cardiovascular benefits of exercise on dry land with less strain and stress plus it allows for a greater range of motion helping with flexibility and balance. And most importantly, it is enjoyable fun! We are currently using social distancing and shields as necessary. As with any other exercise routine, just be certain you get medical clearance from your health care provider before taking the plunge. Call coordinator Peggy Frazier with questions ♥ 906 227 7625

Introducing the state-of-the-art MIYC Riverside Marina Wet Slip Membership
Because market demand for boats over 65 feet has grown substantially over the past 10 years, the inventory of available slips large enough to accommodate them in Naples and south to Marco Island is tight. In addition, and for the same 10-year period, Southwest Florida accounts for a 10% growth in boats 40 to 65 feet. The MIYC Riverside Marina will provide 27 new slips, ranging from 50 to 124 feet. All slips are designed to be a minimum of 24 feet wide.
Wet Slip Memberships Do you know someone who wants to buy a bigger boat, but they don’t know where to keep it? Tell them about our new state-of-the-art Marina! They’ll get a top-of-the-line boat slip and Full Membership in the Club, too! The sales team is ready to answer any questions! Membership sales team: Captain Geoff Fahringer: 239-253-4091 Lee Dorison: 561-756-7375 Ken Gandy: 239-877-3777 Web: www.marcoislandyachtclub.net MIYC Phone: 239-394-0199
Some slips will have lifts, all slips will have water, electricity, pump-out facilities, lighting and security cameras. A full-time Dockmaster will be on hand for any needed assistance, and each Wet Slip Membership includes Member-ship as a Full Member in the Yacht Club. Construction is slated to begin in 2020, to be completed in early 2021. Because slips are in high demand, now is the time to take advantage of this one-of-a-kind, turn- key, pre-construction investment opportunity.
