When people ask why I became a physical therapist, I often tell them that I didn’t know I wanted to pursue physical therapy for a good chunk of my life. However, I did know that I wanted to help people in my career, and I wanted to serve others using my hands, rather than from behind a desk. In high school, I was involved in a community service organization, which sparked my passion for helping people. Then, during my sophomore year of college, one of my fraternity brothers suggested that I look into the exercise science program. I did some research and realized that I could continue onto physical therapy school with a degree in exercise science. After graduation, I could fulfill my dream of having a career of helping others. Today, I love working with my patients to improve their mobility, and I strive to provide my patients — and potential patients — with opportunities to learn more about their ailments and the ways that physical therapy can improve their lives.

Afterward, I was able to sit down with some of the attendees to discuss their individual needs. We even scheduled quite a few people for free screenings. I am so thankful that I pursued a career that allows me to educate people on the benefits of physical therapy and to serve my community firsthand. Going forward, I intend to put on more workshops to help the local community with a variety of injuries. Specifically, I plan to host a knee replacement workshop, a balance and falls workshop, and a shoulder pain workshop. Summer Reading Programs for Kids

Having the kids home from school can be awesome, but how do you keep them busy and mentally engaged? You might find yourself eyeing expensive summer camps or wondering about private tutors. But that’s not necessary. Instead, check out some of these great summer reading rewards programs. They’re free, they’ll get your kids reading, and they’ll give you some time to yourself to boot! The local library is the best place to start. Most city libraries have great summer reading programs that will reward kids for their hard work with prizes, awards, and even free books. Libraries are also great places to get suggestions for kids, and they offer fun activities during the day and night that will foster a love of learning and reading — and lead to more ideas on what to read! But libraries aren’t the only places that reward summer reading. National businesses also get in on the fun. Barnes & Noble will give a free book to any child who completes their summer reading

Cheese will give any child 10 free tokens if they read every day and record their progress on their reading calendar (chuckecheese.com). Pizza Hut will also reward young readers for filling out a passport (bookitprogram. com), and there are other companies that offer incentives.

Remember, reading is about more than just learning. It’s also about keeping minds active to fight the “summer slide” that educators dread every new school year. If you want your kids to have fun, stay sharp, and win cool prizes, get them involved in summer reading!

Total Knee Replacement What Physical Therapy Can Do for You

The knee is the most commonly replaced joint in the body. Usually, total knee replacement surgery is performed when people have knee joint damage due to bone diseases, fractures, knee pain, or alignment problems. In other cases, the surgery is performed on people who have difficulty performing daily tasks due to knee problems. A total knee replacement involves removing the ends of the bones at the knee joint and the thigh bone and replacing them with artificial parts. Replacement parts consist of a metal cap placed on the end of the thigh bone and a plastic cap placed on the top of the shin bone. Sometimes, a plastic insert is used to replace the kneecap. With a total knee replacement, you’ll likely stay in the hospital for two or three days following surgery. While you are in the hospital, a physical therapist will show you how to practice walking with a walker or crutches, teach you how to Recipe or article H adline

safely get in and out of a bed or chair, and help you continue to do the flexibility and strengthening exercises that you learned before surgery. Your physical therapist may even perform electrical stimulation to help reduce swelling and promote wound healing. Electrical stimulation is when electrodes are placed on the skin to stimulate the nerves around the knee. Alternatively, cold therapies may also be used. Proper rehabilitation after a total knee replacement is essential for recovery, and your physical therapist will help you regain as much of your knee’s range of motion as possible. Your therapist will tailor range-of-motion exercises, progressive muscle-strengthening exercises, and body awareness and balance training to your specific needs. While the recovery process can be painful, proper physical therapy can promote healing and hasten recovery.

Your physical therapist can help you quickly return to an active lifestyle and even make your new knee function better than your old one!

5 -Minute Meditation

Try this third-eye meditation to open you up for clear thought, vision, reflection, and wisdom.

Ingredients

Find a quiet space and come to a comfortable seat. Take a moment to form a tall spine, drawing your shoulders back. Bring your thumbs to your third eye, the space in between your eyebrows. Inhale, pausing at the top of your inhale for three to five seconds. Slowly exhale, pausing once the breath is completely released, holding for the same length as your inhale. Repeat this for two more breaths. Release the thumbs from the third eye and float the palms to the knees, continuing to keep the focus on the third eye. Breathe deeply for three to five minutes. If your mind wanders, slowly guide your awareness back to your third eye.

Ingredients • 1 Tbs coco ut oil

Instructions 1. In a medium serving bowl, combine the strawberries, peaches, blueberries, and basil. 2. Drizzle lemon juice, maple syrup, and balsamic vinegar on top. 3. Heat coconut oil over medium heat in large skillet, add salmon and stir frequently for about 3 minutes. 1 cup blueberries
