At the re- cent Flexible Packaging Association meeting, which took place just last month, there was a panel convened on marine debris and current and future solutions.

On a larger scale, a global alliance of nearly 30 companies has been formed to advance products and technologies that re- duce and eliminate plastic waste in the environment, especial- ly in the ocean. The Alliance to End Plastic Waste (AESOP) has committed more than $1 billion with the goal of investing $1.5 billion over the next five years to help end plastic waste in the envi- ronment. New technologies and products will be developed and brought to scale that will minimize and manage plastic waste.This also includes the promotion products for used plas- tics by helping to enable a circular economy. Executives Guide Students Through Corrugated Industry Last month, 32 select students from Bowling Green State University, Illinois State University, Michigan State University, University of Florida and Virginia Tech joined executives from Landaal Packaging, Green Bay Packaging, Menasha, PCA, Pratt Industries, Smurfit Kappa and WestRock for ICPF’s student dia- logue dinner on corrugated packaging careers. The executives provided the students further insight to careers in the industry. Twelve of the students from Bowling Green State University, Illinois State University, University of Flori- da and Virginia Tech were provided ICPF travel grants for travel to East Lansing as ICPF’s dinner and Tele- conference guests. The visiting students joined the MSU student audience in the PBS broadcast auditori- um the next day to view ICPF’s Teleconference, gain- ing additional knowledge on the corrugated industry as well as a unique perspective on the program through observing the other 500 students on the 20 campuses who were able to interact remotely. Many of the students who have participated in the annual dialogue dinner program in past years have accepted positions in the corrugated industry upon graduation.

At the association’s recent Converter Meeting in Asheville, North Carolina, TLMI announced the win- ners of the Eugene Singer Award for Management Excellence.The Singer Award recognizes excellence

in business management measured and defined by an established set of growth and profitability ratios through participation in the TLMI Management Ratio Study. Rewarding Excellence Nearly 100 TLMI member converters throughout the United States and Canada participated in the Ratio Study, however only four companies are award- ed the Eugene Singer honor each year. Based on the new study, The Future Lifecycles of Packaging Recycling to 2023 , Smithers Pira pin- points five areas that are boosting demand and the accessibility to recycling packaging materials. The Circular Economy and Climate Change Although it feels ubiquitous to much of today’s gen- erations, widespread recycling is a relatively new phenomenon. Before recycling became popular, packaging waste was traditionally buried in landfill sites or incinerated.Although both are still prevalent, landfill is now considered a last resort; it sits at the bottom of the European Waste hierarchy with incin- eration just above. A shift is beginning from a linear ‘take, make, waste’ economy — where materials are used just once be- fore disposal — to a circular one, which minimizes the use of raw materials, energy and water and re- processes materials into new products rather than simply throwing them away. In order to accelerate change, the European Union has set out a strategy for moving to a circular econo- my. The New Plastics Economy laid out by the Ellen McArthur Foundation (EMF) is based on the circular economy model, cascading to the UK (for plastics only) as the UK Plastics Pact. Signatories include

and print industry supply chains, has pinpointed five trends that are helping to boost the market. The global packaging market stood at $827.7 bil- lion in 2016 and is expected to grow to $980.4 bil- lion by 2022. Metal (steel) is currently the most recycled material, however plastic is forecast to show the highest levels of growth to 2023, with 19-24 per- cent of plastic being collected and reused. Other ma- terials such as paper and glass have relativity high collection rates but show signs of little growth. Manufacturers, brand owners and retailers are now looking to shift toward a circular economy, as is the goal stated by AESOP, in which no material is wasted but is used multiple times. Brands and retailers are setting themselves targets to ensure that their packaging will be recyclable, reusable or compostable, alongside their existing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) commitments, and are creating ambitious targets for incorporating recycled plastics content, according to Smithers Pira. Through campaigning and the use of social media, there is heightened interest in packaging and the en- vironment, especially plastics, and an increasing pres- sure on companies from both the general public and shareholders.

ICE Europe 2019 Sets Exhibition Space Record

‘Labels Connected’ Event Presents Framework During the first edition of ‘Labels Connected’, held on February 28 at the MPS headquarters in Arnhem, the Netherlands, 60 invitees learned about the bene- fits of systems connectivity in the label industry and how to implement this in their business. The event was organized by MPS, Esko and CERM and support- ing partners AVT and Domino. Addressing a Need Labels Connected started with the partners pre- senting a framework of drivers behind the need to connect people, processes and systems, as well as re- viewing trends and innovations in the label industry. The program offered three interactive workshops during which the attendees could witness live demonstrations of system and workflow connectivity: • Integrating MIS systems and automating prepress; • Digital, hybrid combination printing; and • Extended color gamut with in-line inspection. The organizing partners will host a second Labels Connected mid 2019.The date, location and program will follow.

The international converting industry gathered for the 11th ICE Europe at the Munich Trade Fair Centre in Germany.This year, the World’s Leading Exhibition for the conversion of flexible, web-based materials, such as paper, film, foil and nonwovens, achieved higher numbers of exhibitors and visitors than ever before and also set a record for the exhibition space. A total of 7,150 visitors from 75 countries came to the Bavarian capital to discover machinery, systems, materials, and accessories; which is an increase of vis- itors by 4 percent compared to the previous event.A total of 463 exhibitors from 25 countries presented their latest technologies on a net exhibition space of 11,500 square meters, setting records with an 8 per- cent increase in exhibitor numbers and a 4. percent increase in net exhibition space compared to the previous event. ICE Europe 2021 will take place from March 9-11, 2021, at the Munich Trade Fair Centre in Germany. The next ICE International Converting Exhibition will be ICE USA, which will take place from April 9- 11, 2019 in Louisville, Kentucky.

brands, retailers, packaging manufacturers, waste processors and trade bodies such as Nestlé, Premier Foods, P&G, Asda, Waitrose, Coveris, the BPF and Suez. Similar schemes in Mexico and other countries are expected to follow. Legislation and recycling targets For packaging recycling, legislation begins with standard packaging regulations.These — like the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive 94/62/EC — and simpler regulations from the FDA in the Unit- ed States, state that a minimum amount of packaging should be used for a product, minimal volume should be used, and that the components are suitable for re- cycling. Any material used, virgin or recycled, must comply with heavy metal limits and food contact re- quirements. Recycling targets are set by individual governments. In Europe, producers and users of packaging al- ready pay a form of tax on the packaging they put into the market through Producer Responsibility in Europe. This is implemented via the Green Dot scheme in Europe and the Packaging Recovery Note system in the United Kingdom. Switzerland was ahead of the curve when it intro- duced a landfill ban in 2000 and a ‘polluter pays’ tax on collection bags. What cannot be recycled is incinerated. European recycling targets are already set for 2030. It is anticipated that producer responsibility require- ments will change to account for the incorporation of recycled material, as required by the European cir- cular economy package, since currently there is no such incentive for stakeholders. Voluntary agreements The New Plastics Economy initiative was launched by the Ellen McArthur Foundation in 2016, bringing together cities and large organizations to create a cir- cular economy for plastics. The aims are to: ‘create an effective after-use plas- tics economy’, including improving recycling, the use of reusable packaging and scaling up of industrial composting for targeted applications.The initiative is running a number of activities, including competition for funding for innovative projects. In Asia-Pacific, the organization Circular Economy Asia has created the voluntary Asian Plastics and Packaging Agreement; signatories have a number of targets for an end to the use of landfill for packaging by 2050.

FPA Publishes Sustainability Report

The Flexible Packaging Association (FPA) has pub- lished its latest sustainability report, Perspectives on the Meaning of Sustainability in Flexible Packaging . FPA commissioned the study to better understand perspectives on sustainability and packaging among both consumers and brand owners. Brand owners know consumers care about sustain- ability in general and particularly sustainable materi- als, but many do not think consumers care about sustainable processes, according to the report. The majority of brand owners believe that consumers care about the sustainability aspects of packaging materials; however, brand owners are split about whether or not consumers care about the sustainabil- ity aspects of packaging processes. Consumers see sustainability as important, but spe- cific lifecycle attributes of sustainability are not al- ways top-of-mind. Sustainable manufactur ing processes and transportation efficiency, for example, are less often associated with sustainability than with aspects that are more obvious to consumers, such as recycling. Consumers are also more likely to believe glass or corrugated packaging is more sustainable than flexible packaging, perhaps due to recycling benefits that are more obvious to consumers. From a sustainability perspective, Millennials pre- sent the greatest opportunity for flexible packaging companies. Though not all consumers seek out sus- tainable packaging benefits or are willing to pay more for them, Millennials are more likely than other generations to do either or both. They are also more likely to view certain “behind-the-scenes” attributes such as transportation efficiency and energy efficien- cy as important. Brand owners surveyed said that sustainability is a priority for their companies, and packaging plays a key role in sustainability efforts. Barriers to increas- ing sustainability efforts relate to price and quality, and brand owners expect bio-based packaging and biodegradable packaging to drive sustainable packag- ing trends in the future. FPA Releases Annual Member Report The Flexible Packaging Association (FPA) has pub- lished its latest Report to the Members. The report provides an overview of the many initiatives and ac- tivities FPA conducts on behalf of its members. The report highlights current and ongoing FPA pro- grams that are ensuring that the environmental bene- fits and sustainability advantages of f lexible (Cont’d on Page 13)

Corporate social responsibility Large organizations all have their own CSR policies. These normally have a large number of key performance indicators, of which packaging is a small part.Many, such as Nestlé and Danone, have their own life-cycle analysis tools. For plastics, many have taken on targets in line with EU targets for the New Plastics Economy. Some companies have made notably bolder state- ments. Coca-Cola has declared that its PET bottles will contain 50 percent recycled PET by the year 2020; while UK retailer Iceland Foods has declared an intention to go ‘plastic-free’ by 2023. Environmental campaigning Environmental lobby groups have been putting pressure on industry for decades. In recent years top- ics such as perceived over-packaging have also been regularly covered by media outlets. The latest of these campaigns is ocean plastic. High-profile media coverage, including devastating imagery of vast swathes of the ocean blanketed in plastic, has made marine pollution a hot topic. Alongside this is a movement of people attempting to live plastic-free and many aspiring to a zero-waste lifestyle that does not focus on just one material. Al- though these individuals are relatively low in number compared to the total population, their influence is widespread due to the use of social media. Social media also has a large part to play in the success of online petitions, which have encouraged many brands to reconsider the ways in which they tackle sustainability issues. FPA Announces 2019 Student Flexible Packaging Winners The Flexible Packaging Association (FPA) has an- nounced the winners of the FPA 2019 Student Flexi- ble Design Challenge. This year’s first place winners were a team of students from University of Wisconsin — Stout, and a student from San José State University was the second place winner. FPA’s annual Achievement Awards competition rec- ognizes innovative flexible packaging from across its membership. The industry also believes it is impor- tant to encourage and recognize students who are working to become the next generation of packaging designers. For the 2019 competition, FPA received 42 concept outlines from some of the top packaging de- sign programs across the United States. From the con- cept outlines submitted, 18 were selected to continue to the development phase.

FPA Wraps Annual Meeting The Flexible Packaging Association’s 2019 Annual Meeting was held March 6-8 at the Scottsdale Resort at McCormick Ranch in Scottsdale,Arizona.Attendees included more than 250 FPA members and guests who participated in general sessions that focused on flexible packaging industry-specific challenges and opportunities. Curt Begle, President, Health, Hygiene, and Spe- cialties Business for Berry Global, and Chairman of the FPA Board of Directors, opened the Annual Meeting educational sessions with a preliminary overview of the state of the flexible packaging in- dustry, and Jan Homan, FPE Honorary Chairman and Senior Advisor of Constantia Flexibles, provid- ed an update on the European flexible packaging market. Nick Vafiadis, Vice President, Plastics, IHS Markit, shared an update on the polyethylene mar- ket; and Tom Blaige, Chairman and CEO, Blaige and Company, provided a consolidation analysis for plastics, packaging, and chemicals. FPA’s 2020 Annual Meeting will take place March 4- 6, 2020 at the Hyatt Regency Coconut Point Resort and Spa in Bonita Springs, Florida.
