the problem by focusing on the retailer’s private brand packaging, building upon existing efforts to re- duce plastic waste inWalmart U.S. and Sam’s Club op- erations, and encouraging national brand suppliers to set similar packaging goals. At the supplier forum, Walmart executives highlighted that the company is working with suppliers to expand efforts to improve the sustainability of its private brand product packag- ing, with an emphasis on increasing recyclability and making it easier for customers to recycle. Walmart announced that it will work with its U.S. pri- vate brand suppliers on the following commitments: • Seek to achieve 100 percent recyclable, reusable or industrially compostable packaging for its private brand packaging by 2025; • Target at least 20 percent post-consumer recycled content in private brand packaging by 2025; • Label 100 percent of food and consumable private brand packagingwith the How2Recycle label by 2022; • Work with suppliers to eliminate the non-recy- clable packaging material PVC in general merchan- dise packaging by 2020; and • Reduce private brand plastic packaging when possible, optimizing the use to meet the need. Committed To Improvement During the forum,Walmart encouraged it’s national brand suppliers to make similar packaging commit- ments through the retailer’s Project Gigaton platform. The retailer has also introduced a new recycling playbook designed to provide information to compa- nies pursuing recyclable packaging and recycled con- tent goals. The recycling playbook gives overviews on what type of plastic packaging is more easily recy- clable and provides information on recycling chal- lenges for certain packaging materials. This new recycling guidance is a supplement to Walmart’s ex- isting sustainable packaging playbook that offers in- formation on sustainable packaging best practices such as optimizing packaging design and using con- sumer-friendly recycling labels. Plastic waste is a growing concern for Walmart cus- tomers, associates and other key stakeholders.Walmart’s aspiration is to achieve zero plastic waste by taking ac- tions across its business and working with suppliers to use less plastic, recycle more and support innovations to improve plastic waste reduction systems. Some of the retailer’s current efforts to reach this goal include: • Offering low-cost, high-quality alternatives for sin- gle use plastic consumable products such as straws, cutlery and disposable tabletops;

As the printing and converting industry continues to experience the well-known gap in its workforce it is more important than ever that the industry come together to develop new ideas and concepts to cre- ate a strong channel of incoming talent, according to the two groups. TLMI and the Phoenix Challenge Foundation are passionate about the sustainability of the industry and look forward to working together on the com- mon mission of facilitating programs that will help recruit new, sustain existing, and continue to develop talented employees and future leaders for the pack- age printing industry, the groups said in a statement. Wendy’s Collaborates For Sustainable Packaging Fast food restaurant chain Wendy's has collaborated with NextGen Consortium, multi-year partnership of foodservice industry leaders assembled by Closed Loop Partners’ Center for the Circular Economy, as part of its sustainable packaging strategy. Wendy’s joined NextGen Consortium as a supporting partner to advance sustainable packaging solutions in the foodservice industry, in addition to optimizing its own operations. As part of the initiative, Wendy’s will work with other industry leaders to solve the issue of single-use food packaging waste. Clemson Hosts Inaugural Flexo Event

Walmart Addresses Plastic ( Cont’d from Page 4)

• Recycling shrink wrap in most markets — 151 million pounds of plastics were recycled globally in 2017; • Providing access to in-store plastic bag and film recycling bins for customers; and • Encouraging suppliers to include the How2Recy- cle label on pack—last year more than 800 Walmart private label suppliers participated. TheWalmart Foundation is also supporting a number of circular economy initiatives such as the U.S. Cham- ber of Commerce Foundation’s Beyond 34 project — a multi-stakeholder initiative aimed at increasing the current 34 percent recycling rate in the U.S. by provid- ing a scalable model to increase and improve recycling and recovery rates in local communities. In being a signatory to the G7 Oceans Plastics Char- ter and the New Plastics Economy Global Commit- ment being led by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, in collaboration with the UN Environment, Walmart is working globally to reduce plastic waste within its operations and throughout its value chain. By the end of 2017, Walmart diverted from landfills 81 percent of unsold products, packaging and other waste mate- rials in the United States.

On February 6-7, an inaugural Future of Flexo event was hosted at Clemson University’s Sonoco Institute of Packaging Design and Graphics, presented by OMET Americas. The event centered around “New Year, New Technology” and was sponsored by indus- try print suppliers Eaglewood Technologies, Siegwerk, Phoseon Technology, Nazdar Ink Technologies, DuPont, Techkon, DBT Coatings and Harper Corpora- tion.The two-day event was created to showcase new and innovative opportunities for flexo printers/con- verters to consider for their 2019 budget spending and overall long-term cost savings.This first event in- cluded presentations on everything from the latest OMET press options, like the flexo/digital hybrid press created with Durst, to anilox cleaning tech- niques, digital flexo plate creation methods, UV LED coating and curing applications, and much more. “The Future of Flexo event by OMET was a great event to showcase, not only...products from industry suppliers, but also highlighted the amazing work going on at the Sonoco Institute,”said Peter Mulheran,Vice President and General Manager of EaglewoodTechnologies.

training program, spending time in manufacturing, parts and service,marketing, and sales operations. Over the course of the last twenty years, in addition to completing my undergraduate business degree and later my Masters of Business Adminis- tration, I have held various positions with suppliers in our industry, each offering more progressive levels of responsibility. Through the years, I have sold presses and press auxiliary equipment servicing the web offset, sheet-fed, digital, flexible packaging, and corrugated segments, all of which has led to my current position with Koenig & Bauer. FMN: Explain your motivations in joining Koenig & Bauer. In my previous roles, I gained valuable experience in leadership, working to build and develop a team fo- cused on sales success, but I missed the excitement and energy of working on capital equipment projects. Plus, I always held Koenig & Bauer in high regard due to its stellar reputation for product and support. When the opportunity surfaced to discuss my current Jeff Dietz

Flexo Spotlight

The Importance Of Partnering With Customers Jeff Dietz, VP, Web & Specialty Press Division, for Koenig & Bauer, spoke exclusively with Flexo Market News about his journey in the printing industry, what he hopes to accomplish in his role, and the impor- tance of partnering with customers. FMN: Talk a little about your professional life before joining Koenig & Bauer. We’ve often heard the saying “I was born with ink in my veins,” and that is certainly true for me too. My fa- ther, who had a long, successful career in press equip- ment sales, was very influential in my decision to pursue a career path in the graphic arts. While many of my friends had very typical first jobs in high school, I spent summers either helping to rebuild press equipment or tasked with odd jobs in an offset printing operation, like stripping film or dipping ink. Before entering the full-time workforce, I had the opportunity to apprentice for a web offset press man- ufacturer, providing me with a highly comprehensive

Pratt Industries To Invest 20M In Packaging Operation Pratt Industries, Inc., reportedly the world’s largest privately held, 100 percent recycled paper and packaging company, will invest more than $20 mil- lion to establish a new paper packaging and ship- ping materials manufacturing operation in the Botetourt County,Virginia. The facility will be Pratt’s second manufacturing operation in Virginia and will reportedly allow the company to increase market share and grow sales of its paper-based packaging and shipping materials within Virginia and the surrounding states. Virginia successfully competed with multiple states for the project, which will create 50 new jobs. Since its founding almost 30 years ago, Pratt Indus- tries, Inc. has grown to reportedly become the fifth- largest corrugated packaging company in the United States with manufacturing facilities in more than 27 states. The company’s more than 8,000 employees service a variety of industries with packaging and re- cycling needs while maintaining a commitment to the environment and sustainability. Pratt Industries’ products are primarily made from post-consumer re- cycled materials. Colbert Reduces Carbon Footprint With Wind Energy Colbert Packaging Corporation, Lake Forest, Illi- nois, a provider of paperboard packaging solutions, has purchased renewable energy credits (RECs) in the form of wind energy.This initiative complements Colbert’s overall sustainable strategy and commit- ment to reducing the environmental impact of its operations. The investment allows Colbert to lower its carbon footprint and protect the environment, and supports the development of renewable energy technologies. "We manufacture paperboard-based folding cartons, which is a sustainable alternative to plastics,” stated Colbert President and COO, John Lackner. “Now we are able to further our strategy to meet overall clean energy goals with wind energy credits.We firmly be- lieve it’s important to make sustainable decisions with the future in mind — for our employees and their families, our customers and our community.” Colbert made this investment in renewable wind energy by purchasing Green-e Energy certified re- newable energy certificates (RECs) to reduce the emissions associated with its electricity consump- tion. That’s an environmental impact equivalent to the avoidance of 17,640 barrels of oil.

position, there was never any pause in pursuing it. As I got to know the people within Koenig & Bauer better during the interview process, I developed an appreciation for how every level of the organization carried themselves, both within the confines of the company and externally in supporting its customers. This strong company culture compounded with a very sound corporate strategy, are two areas that made an immediate impression and made me proud to join Koenig & Bauer. FMN: What do you hope to accomplish in your role with Koenig & Bauer? Koenig & Bauer is in the midst of a very exciting time in its 200 year history. It just celebrated that amazing milestone and is accelerating its growth within the printing industry. One of the more exciting aspects of my position is to be introducing new tech- nology within a variety of different printing/packag- ing segments and printing processes. Under the Web & Specialty Press division, we have equipment solu- tions for the flexible packaging, corrugated, metal decorating, commercial printing, and folding carton segments, with flexo, digital, and offset solutions with- in each of those respective markets. In my role, we’ve been steadily increasing a team of sales and technical specialists to support our customers at every stage of the process and provide them with the highest level of service when they partner with Koenig & Bauer. One of our fastest growing segments, flexible packaging, known by the Koenig & Bauer Flexotecnica product line, is gaining considerable attention in the market, not only for the newly developed press technol- ogy, but for our supporting personnel. I’ve had the pleasure of representing Koenig & Bauer Flexotecnica as a newly-appointed member to the board of directors of the Flexographic Technical Association and board of trustees of the Foundation of Flexographic Technical Association.We’re reaching existing and potential customers who recognize that our presses and our service and training, based in Dal- las,Texas, is critical for their success.We have quality customers that are installing our Koenig & Bauer Flex- otecnica presses at their facilities as we speak. As an equipment supplier, it might sound cliché to suggest partnering with your customers, but it is something that we believe we can take a step fur- ther.
