THE ROAD TO WORLD- CLASS SAFETY Filled With Continuous Improvement

as escalating workers’ compensation premiums, higher costs of medical treatment, and

The road to world-class safety is littered with obstacles. We encounter detours, road construction, wrong turns, and maybe a breakdown or two. But in order to reach our goal of becoming world class in safety, we have to be diligent and overcome these obstacles. Along the way, we also run into some really neat roadside attractions or a nice place to explore. These are good places to rest and regroup. They give us time to reevaluate our course, maybe look at a different map, or take a side road that helps us learn more about our journey. That is the excitement of a road trip: You can discover all sorts of cool things along the way. The pandemic in 2020 seemed to be a huge roadblock for our safety journey. But, instead of waiting for the road to clear, we took this opportunity to examine and improve our road map to world-class safety. With this time for reflection, we implemented a new position in the company, the regional safety and continuous improvement coordinator (SCI). These folks work closely with each location in their respective regions on safety issues. However, their primary focus is to coach, support, and help the locations with continuous improvement projects. Each location identifies their projects, and the SCI will help out in any way they can so that the location will reap the benefits of continuous improvement. Also, during the “COVID-19 detour,” we happened upon a crossroad called the safety and continuous improvement intersection. This intersection showed us that organizations that do not practice continuous improvement have higher than normal injuries. These injuries are wasteful and non-value-adding (NVA) events. The loss or injury of trained and experienced workers, and the resulting disruption to our business and our customer’s business, represent waste in our organization. When left uncontrolled, these factors can create disruption due to many cost-related factors, such

rehabilitation programs. The economic losses also include indirect losses, such as administrative cost, productivity losses, low morale, and unhappy customers.

Continuous improvement also looks at reducing the likelihood of errors. Error-prone situations are predictable, manageable, and preventable. NVA events can be avoided by understanding the reasons errors occur and applying lessons learned from past events and errors. If we can eliminate a simple production error by standardizing a work process, can we not also apply that same principle to errors as it relates to injuries? Since continuous improvement aims to reduce NVA events in the work process, it follows that safeguarding workers from occupational hazards would be a natural outcome of continuous improvement’s ideal of waste elimination. So, as we continue on this journey to becoming world class in safety, we will continue to run into some roadblocks and detours. However, knowing what we learned during the last stopover, adding the SCI, and coming to the intersection of safety and continuous improvement, these should just be some bumps in the road that will make us better when we do arrive at our destination.

– Mike Nelson Safety Director

There may not be a nicer group of people in the company than our IT department. They get to see all of us at our worst moments, when we are melting down because some piece of technology is ruining our lives. The self-proclaimed goal of this IT department is to make our jobs easier. They are serious about that and they pull it off with style. This month’s profile is a tribute to the hard-working, smart, fun-loving IT group at Jaguar. THE TEAM THAT MAKES OUR JOBS EASIER

The following messages of praise and recognition were submitted by people across the company using highfive@ franklinbuildingsupply.com. They are a sampling of the high- fives submitted recently. Anyone can say thanks or good job using this easy tool. We welcome you to look for examples of great works that exemplify our keys to Making Building Easy: Wow (the amazing customer experience), Guide (smooth handoffs), Safe (watching out for each other), and Strive (continuously learning and improving). “I had some praise to pass on from a customer who built a house through the McCall store. ‘I’ve always been treated like a big fish, though my projects would suggest otherwise.’ Everyone from the sales counter to the drivers has left a great impression.” POSITIVE FEEDBACK IS POWERFUL

Adam Ingle is the department manager. He takes pride in understanding our company’s needs from a real-world standpoint. Adam started at FBS in the Boise yard and became the company’s first IT employee when he graduated from Boise State. With a smile like this, you know he’s really a Vandal. Josh Booher is another FBS veteran, having started at the Boise sales counter under Tom Mosgrove. He is Josh of all trades when it comes to his tech expertise, and he is second-in-charge at the department. Known for his great laugh, he also is in the running for best beard in the department, and he’s talented enough to be a Vandal. Mike Armstrong is a self-taught computer whiz, who started his own tech consulting business as a sideline to his first career as a long-haul trucker. Turns out he’s versatile, and we are glad he decided to make our IT department his calling. No word on what he thinks of the Vandals. Derrik Broughton (here with daughter Nora) started with FBS in the Boise yard, bringing his own tech talent with him. He rose quickly through the yard ranks, spent time on the Boise sales counter and at Caldwell’s central takeoff department before ultimately joining the IT crew. Psst: another Vandal (check the hat!) Brennan Ingle is a chip off the old block. He did his time interning, while working on his degree, and helped a ton as a part-timer in the department until he graduated from college. Now he’s a full-timer, and folks are lining up

“I’d like to give a high-five to Mary Ann, Dory, and Will at our Gooding store. Since we switched to our new accounting system, I rarely have to touch any of their POs, as they flow through the system almost perfectly. Their receiving is rock solid! They are a pleasure to work with!”

–Kathleen Putman, AP Specialist, Jaguar

“A big high-five to Jessica Vineyard. She traveled to Pocatello, from the Caldwell store, to share her high-level receiving expertise with our receiving crew. The collaborative effort was a big help to us, and I am pretty sure we had some fun along the way.”

–Danny Green and the Pocatello Receiving Team

“The Burley crew has been working on resetting some of their aisles in the store. Instead of renting a gondola mover, Lucas Albert volunteered to make a set. It makes all the difference and allows our crew to safely move gondolas in a fraction of the time it would take to move them by hand. Lucas was able to make a set for about the same cost as renting a set for a month. We can now share it around the company.”

–Bryce Luker, Regional Manager, High Desert Region

to thank him for the help. Brennan is pretty sure that his dad, Adam, can’t grow a better beard than this. He’s got Vandal blood. Kristin Hinson is our newest member of the team, and so far she’s fitting right in. After getting her start in the U.S. Navy, this team of landlubbers is no problem for Kristin. She comes with experience in point-of-sale support and is training to be our BisTrack guru. Also, she doesn’t need facial hair to be cool. Vandal meter is probable.

“High-five to Kevin LaCombe and Angel Campos who handle the bulk of granite installs. They have great attitudes and are really killing it on installs. A recent customer told me, ‘I want you to know that Kevin and Angel were respectful and did such a good job on my countertops and stayed late to finish.’”

Meet Yard Manager Justin Osterhout!

MEET YARD MANAGER JUSTIN OSTERHOUT! An Outdoorsman On and Off the Clock

“The most challenging part of my job is trying to increase the efficiency of my yard to keep up with the growing demand,” he says.

One thing we pride ourselves on here at Franklin Building Supply is that our employee-owners know how to hire team members who really “get” our mission. Justin Osterhout, the yard manager of our Twin Falls location, is one of those people! When we spoke to Justin this month, it was clear he understands Franklin is about more than just lumber, trusses, and doors — we want to build a family and create friendly, positive places for our workers and customers to spend time in. “The part I enjoy most about my job is the relationships that I have built with my coworkers and the atmosphere that we have created,” Justin says. Of course, laboring in a lumberyard isn’t all sunshine and rainbows! There’s hard work to be done, too, and as a manager Justin leads the charge on it.

Fortunately, Justin is an expert at the constant pursuit of perfection. When we visit the Twin Falls branch, he is always out in the yard, working to take its operations to the next level. “I am always looking for ways to improve efficiency, while creating a safer and easier work environment for my fellow coworkers,” he says. “From a simple tool to redesigning an entire warehouse, I will assist anyone working to create the most efficient work environment from my yard.” When he’s off the clock, you can still find Justin outside. He loves to camp and hunt in the beautiful Idaho wilderness surrounding Twin Falls and spend time with his family.

Justin, we appreciate the hard work you’ve put in for Franklin Building Supply over the last four years. Thank you, and keep it up!
