NEWSLETTER www.fyzical.com/cordele HEALTH & WELLNESS
September celebrates National Rehabilitation Week, and we are so proud to be rehabilitation therapists who get you moving in the right direction. Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Speech Therapy are all important pieces of the rehabilitation process, and it is our privilege to provide these to the communities in Southwest Georgia. Rehabilitation is “the action of restoring someone to health or normal life through training and therapy.” Physical therapy plays an important role in daily movement by helping you regain your independence in the safest and most effective ways. Whether it has to do with aches and pains, injuries, or weakness and imbalances, Physical Therapy trains your muscles to get you not only moving but feeling back to normal. Occupational Therapy is a crucial rehab component as well. Occupational Therapy helps people regain the ability to perform activities required in daily life, such as eating, brushing their teeth, and getting dressed. If one has difficulty performing activities such as these, Occupational Therapy is the solution to relearn how to do them or make adaptations based on personal changes to continue doing them independently. Speech Therapy also plays an important role in rehabilitation by helping people with speech, language and cognitive difficulties speak and communicate. If one is experiencing speech difficulties and cannot communicate in the way they need, it can be extremely difficult to live a normal life. Our Speech Therapists help our patients regain their speech and language abilities and feel more comfortable communicating their wants and needs to those around them. Rehab may be required after a physical injury, a stroke, or even a cardiac event. FYZICAL provides Cordele with the updated technology, education and services to recover from these events and get back to living normal lives as quickly as possible. It may not always be easy, but we get you moving in the right direction! Injury and Post-Surgery Rehabilitation If you recently experienced an injury or had surgery of any kind, the use of those muscles is put on hold. When your injury has healed or surgery is finished, it’s easy to want to resume your previous training, movement and activities – but that’s not always best for you and your body. Physical Therapy after an injury or surgery retrains and strengthens the muscles that have weakened or experienced trauma and regains your range of mobility. A sudden transition back to your regular training and activities could reaggravate the injury, slow down recovery, or cause bigger problems down the road. NATIONAL REHAB WEEK SEPTEMBER 19TH-25TH, 2021
VERSE OF THE MONTH “ “
“Let all that you do, be done in love.” 1 Corinthians 16:14
Our Physical Therapists will work with you to create a plan that will let your muscles get used to working again at a pace that won’t injure or strain them. This means when you get back into your activities, you’re less likely to experience problems, pain or other injuries while training or things like folding the laundry and carrying groceries. Stroke Rehabilitation Strokes have a wide range of different effects on people. That means stroke rehabilitation can’t look the same for everyone! We treat each patient based on the skills they lost from their stroke. Stroke rehabilitation often involves all three of our disciplines: Physical, Speech and Occupational Therapy. Physical Therapy helps patients relearn motor skills, such as walking, sitting, and standing. Occupational Therapy helps patients relearn daily tasks, such as writing, cooking, dressing and eating. Speech Therapy helps patients relearn language skills or learn other forms of communication. With patience and dedication, stroke survivors can regain much of what a stroke seems to have taken from them. COVID-19 Rehabilitation COVID-19 can affect several physiological systems and have both short- and long-term effects on patients, including a variety of physical impairments. Physical therapists play an important role in combating the COVID-19 pandemic, as they contribute to the prevention and rehab of impairments caused by the illness, in addition to assisting with functional independence and facilitating individuals’ reintegration into society and jobs. The PT protocol for these patients includes low- intensity aerobic exercises, muscle strengthening, and balance training to improve their safety, functional mobility, and allow a full return to their prior level of function. If you or someone you know are experiencing post-COVID effects, contact your physician for a referral for a physical therapy evaluation.

DIVE INTO AQUATIC THERAPY
Our community has been asking for it and we are excited to announce the official opening of our Aquatic Therapy Program! A variety of conditions and injuries make it challenging to perform therapy and exercise. Some patients would benefit from the unique environment created by Aquatic Therapy, and we can now offer it to them! Aquatic Therapy offered in our 86 degree therapeutic pool offers many advantages and benefits to individuals recovering from all phases of injury or illness. The scope of patient diagnoses treated in our pool is surprisingly vast, encompassing everything from post-surgical, non-surgical, orthopedic, rheumatologic, and neurological to chronic pain. It is the therapeutic properties of the water combined with the skill and specialized training of our aquatic therapists that will help you to improve your mobility and function. You do not have to be a swimmer to participate in or benefit from water therapy. Your aquatic therapist will customize and train you in an aquatic exercise that is appropriate to your level. Patients participating in aquatic therapy can expect the following benefits: 1. Increase in joint flexibility. Buoyancy offers a tremendous advantage because it reduces the effects of gravity allowing for increased joint range of motion. Your affected body part will float, making it easier and less painful to move. The warm water also helps to relax muscles that are sore or tight. 2. Increase in muscle strength. Water is 600-700 times more resistive than air which allows for strengthening of weakened muscles. Water resists rapid movement so equipment with increased surface area is used to increase strength in the pool. 3. Decrease in pain. Immersion in warm water increases an individual’s comfort, by increasing blood supply to sore muscles and promoting relaxation. Weight relief to weakened body structures also creates additional comfort. 4. Decrease in abnormal tone, spasticity, and rigidity. Water temperatures above 92 degrees in conjunction with hands on techniques are effective in creating neutral warmth that reduces increased tone due to a neurological injury. 5. Improved balance. The uniform pressure of the water along with buoyancy provides support to your body which allows you increased time to react without the fear of falling or getting hurt.
If you are suffering from any of the following conditions, Aquatic Therapy might be the perfect solution for you to get to moving and feeling like normal again:
- - - - - - - - -
Chronic Pain Joint Pain Brain Injury Sports Injury

We recommend Aquatic Therapy because it avoids joint strain, is appropriate for all levels of fitness, soothes sore muscles with warm water, and supports the body while providing gentle resistance. If you’re wondering if Aquatic Therapy might help you in your therapy and rehabilitation process, speak with your doctor of physical therapist today. PATIENT TESTIMONIAL
“I came here originally because I had Parkinson’s and was looking around for a program nearby. I go to Gainesville, FL for my doctor’s appts and was wanting somewhere local. I found Fyzical on the internet and saw they had a program for Parkinson’s. I had a referral sent here, and it’s been a good experience. Karen is very good. You can tell she’s very dedicated with what she does, she’s a good motivator and does all of the exercises and programs with you, which makes it a lot easier. I had been to physical therapy before, and she is the best therapist I’ve ever worked with. My Speech Therapist, Stephanie, has helped me improve in my speech and loudness and everything. The Occupational Therapy has helped me increase my strength in my arms. Everybody has done a fantastic job! I feel so much better now; I don’t shake as much or have as many tremors, I’m walking better, talking better, and just all around feel the improvements. Other people who haven’t seen me in awhile have been noticing my improvements as well, and that means a lot more than just what I am noticing. I would recommend this place to absolutely anyone. - Michael Shivok
