PAUL HAGGITH OCTOBER 2021

‘Summer Swell’ Oil on linen, 122 x 183cm $19,000 THE SEA, THE CITY.

PAUL HAGGITH The Sea, The City. 8th - 31st October 2021

Having spent my life by and in the sea, it is only natural that it is my most popular form of subject matter with its depth, it’s moods, it’s colour, with light sparkling on it, objects floating in it, reflections upon it and people immersed within it. Water is irresistible as it gives an endless array of resource and inspiration. When I arrived at art school in the seventies, I was a young abstract painter inspired by international artists such as Jackson Pollock and Paul Klee and Australian artists such as David Aspden. These artists flattened the picture plane creating, in the instance of Aspden and Pollock, “field” paintings. Yet over my time at art school, I became a realist painter inspired by some fellow students and artists such as William Delafield- Cook and Salvatore Dali. These days I feel the two forces have merged somewhat as I paint realist subjects on what tends to be a flattened picture plane or “field”, which is often a body of water dotted with people or objects. Thusly I feel like an abstract painter playing with colour and shapes that happen to be realist. I spend a great deal of time painting directly from life. These plein-air landscapes, still life studies of bits and pieces of found objects and regular life figure drawings, along with other drawings, photographs, my memories and of course imagination, make up the foundation of a painting or series of paintings. A small selection of the plein-air works have been included in the current show. In the studio I tend to work on several canvases at once as I layer the paint and need each layer to dry before the next layer can be applied. Although of course, there is a fair bit of wet in wet painting within each layer. This is a fairly traditional

form of painting and is best suited to painting from dark to light, with the dark areas being the thinnest paint and the light areas being the thickest.

Over the years I have worked on many murals both here and overseas. I have also worked as a finishing artist for museums and theme parks also both here overseas. These projects have included work for Questacon in Canberra, Sydney Aquarium, Mustafa Palace in Abu Dhabi, and Terra Mittica in Spain. Although these large scale projects are fulfilling and often a lot of fun, these days my main focus is on my exhibition work and commissions. This keeps me very busy and allows a free expression and the opportunity to follow threads of creativity uninterrupted.

PAUL HAGGITH The Sea, The City. 8th - 31st October 2021

Over several years two themes have predominated my work, sea scapes and the urban environment.

Sea scapes are often populated with figures, sometimes the recurring drifting boat appears and more recently in the largest paintings just water as waves bathed in light gently roll towards the viewer. The urban landscapes are from my overseas travels and some are closer to home. I travel with a small sketch book and water colour kit plus a camera to take down whatever captures my eye bringing it all back in the studio and manipulating the information to suit the work.

Although these are realist work, they are based on a more abstract approach to the structure of the canvas by flattening out the picture plane.

Also included in this exhibition are small ‘plein air’ gouaches that I paint in situ, these are often the basis of larger works yet are finished works in themselves.
