Gratitude for Ingenuity It Got Us Through a Challenging Year

In our office, we’re thankful for so many

We’re entering the holiday season, which means it’s the perfect time to reflect on all the things we’re thankful for in our lives. I’ll be the first to say it: I’m thankful we’re finally putting 2020 behind us! It was a tough year for everyone, but having learned so much, here we are, stronger on the other side of it. Not to mention, we’ve discovered more ways to feel gratitude for things we never imagined. Who would have thought looking back on 2020 that we’d be so thankful to have our homes stocked with Charmin and Angel Soft? This year showed us the importance of many commodities we take for granted, like toilet paper, cleaning supplies, and even fresh meat at one point. I’m thankful businesses found ways to provide people with the essentials they need to feel comfortable at home. The innovations they have come up with to survive and continue serving their customers this past year have been inspiring. Whether it’s plexiglass dividers, curbside pickup, or the willingness to change their products based on community need, I’m grateful for their ingenuity. Even though being shut down for a few months (to conserve surgical masks and gloves) was difficult, I’m thankful we added 20 new patients seen for emergencies And I had time to work on home and personal projects. Many people got a chance to reignite old passions or discover new hobbies they might not have otherwise. And on the flip side of that, we were also very thankful to go back to work when we could. Absence made the heart grow fonder for our work and our team!

things. We were able to continue to work safely because of the REME Halo Air Purification system we had invested in and installed a few years ago. We jumped on that piece of ingenuity without knowing how important it would truly be, but by

always keeping our patients’ best interests in mind, it’s now paid off in droves. It’s also kept our team healthy and safe, and I couldn’t ask for more than that. We may not be celebrating the holidays with our annual parties like we do each year, but we’ll find other creative ways to show each other how much we appreciate one another. This year really has come down to ingenuity if you think about it. We were all faced with myriad problems over the months, and continuing to live meaningful lives required figuring out how best to face those problems. We had to get creative, technologies had to develop, and attitudes had to shift. But we’ve made it to the end of 2020, and we did it together. We never could have done that without our patients, too. We wouldn’t be here without your incredible support and faith in our business over the years. We’re so glad that even with so many things happening this year, you’re still making time to take care of your teeth and your overall health. We’re humbled by that. The biggest lesson we’ve learned is that we really are blessed to do the work we do. We get to see and help people every day. Our work can’t be done via telehealth or at home. We get to interact with people, and during a year when isolation has been getting everyone down, those interactions have been so valuable and meaningful. There’s nothing quite like seeing our patients face to face, making those connections, and being there for them when they need us. In many ways, you’re there when we need you, too. So, thank you.

Have a happy holiday season and a wonderful New Year!

–Dr. David Yates

MEET KISMET, A DENTIST’S TOOTHLESS THERAPY DOG

Therapy pets can have a powerful impact on dental patients, especially if those patients have anxiety.

“The studies are very clear: People who sit and pet animals have lower blood pressure, and that’s what it's all about,”Dr. Cameron Garrett told TODAY when the world found out about Kismet. Garrett’s dental practice employs the adorable 13-year-old Chihuahua rescue as a therapy animal that patients can hold and pet while they get dental work done. Kismet’s life has not been easy. The Muttville Senior Dog Rescue has invested thousands of dollars into Kismet’s health — they diagnosed her with heart disease, removed a cancerous tumor, treated a hernia, and removed all of her teeth due to periodontal disease. Yet, Kismet remains a very sweet dog. She never barks and loves back scratches and being held. It’s especially amazing that the toothless Kismet found such a perfect new home with dental professionals! This past July, Cameron Garrett and his wife, Debra Garrett (a hygienist), adopted Kismet into their home as well as their dental practice. The serene dog has provided a special experience for patients who come for exams, cleanings, and even root canals.

Of course, some patients are scared of dogs. In those cases, Kismet relaxes behind a closed gate. But over 98% of patients happily take Kismet on their laps while they undergo their dental procedure. Cameron Garrett told CNN, “Quite honestly, as a dentist, I’m as much a psychiatrist or psychologist as anything else. Kismet has allowed us to have another tool in our toolbox.”They can even use the toothless pup’s story to teach patients about the effects of periodontal disease. Getting love from patients also helps Kismet. “She just wants to be with us,”Debra Garrett explained. The new owners suspect that she was abused in the past and is still recovering from that trauma. “When she is on a patient’s lap, she’s providing them comfort, but she’s also getting comfort. It’s hard for me to describe how nice it is for me to be looking at her while I’m working. It’s just a win-win all the way around.”

Our hearts are officially melted. It’s only fitting for a pet hero to have heroic owners, too!

Get Your Backyard Glowing As more and more homeowners are seeking to bring the indoors to the outdoors, fireplaces and firepits are a “hot” commodity for making that happen. There are several details to consider if you want to create maximum ambiance while providing your family or guests with a little light and warmth. WITH THE PERFECT OUTDOOR FIREPLACE

what you want most out of a fireplace. If you want more of a camping or outdoorsy feel, opt for a round bowl. If you’re creating a communal place to gather, a double-sided fireplace allows for more seating flexibility. How you fuel your fire — gas, propane, or natural wood — will play into its aesthetic appeal as well. You can even add a brick oven for baking pizza or other barbecue options for a more unique look. SIZE The size of your fireplace will determine how many people can gather around and enjoy it. If you like to entertain large crowds, you’ll need a bigger size, perhaps one with an extended hearth. If you plan for small gatherings, you can find pits or places as small as 3 feet in diameter. Take the size of your yard into consideration as well — bigger yards can house larger pits, while a large pit may look oversized in a smaller yard. Firepits and fireplaces make for great outdoor gathering spots. The heat and light they provide also allow you to use your backyard for more of the year. Make yours a thoughtful addition to your outdoor space, and you’ll create a fun and unique focal point for your backyard.

PLACEMENT The possibilities are nearly endless, but consider the unique features of your backyard when deciding where to put your fireplace or firepit. Placing it by a pool or hot tub provides a perfect area to dry off and warm up. If your home has a garden, build your fireplace near its edge to integrate it into the foliage. If you go for a big and bold design, place it somewhere so that you can still visibly appreciate it from inside your home. And always take climate into consideration when deciding where to locate your fireplace. Protect it from too much sun or rain exposure. DESIGN Fireplaces and pits these days range from circular bowls to a traditional in-wall or double-sided setup. Your design should help you achieve
