DECEMBER 2018

With a Touch of California Kindness A TRUE NEW YORK DENTIST

INSIDE THIS ISSUE:

PG 1

A Dentist for New Yorkers

My path to dentistry started with a realization that I enjoyed both medicine and working with my hands. As a teenager, I enjoyed and excelled in science classes. During my free time, I built wooden model ships, like the Cutty Sark and the USS Constitution. I also excelled in still and motion picture photography, which I have continued to pursue throughout my life. Dentistry provided me with a profession that combined science, manual dexterity, and creativity. Even better; dentistry gave me the opportunity to improve patients’ self esteem by giving them smiles to match their natural beauty. I’m extremely lucky to do something I love in the greatest city in the world. The focus of our practice has always been giving patients more in service value than they pay for. We aim to treat patients the way we’d like to be treated

I grew up in Great Neck, on the North Shore of Long Island, but my path to becoming a dentist included a few stops along the way. I graduated from Georgetown University and practiced in Los Angeles before opening my practice on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. While I’ve always been a New Yorker at heart; my time in D.C. and Los Angeles has influenced my personality in many ways. I picked up meditation many years back, which has offered me a sense of tranquility even amid the hustle of living and working in Manhattan. I would like to think the increased patience I learned living among those carefree Californians has influenced the way I approach patient care. We give every patient the attention they deserve, learning about their lives and creating a real relationship.

ourselves. This means appointment times are honored and finances are transparent and fully explained. I also go out of my way to do the little things that make patients feel seen and heard. If you’ve had an operative procedure with us, you can expect a follow- up phone call from me, checking in and making sure you’re doing well. We don’t do these things because they set us apart from other practices; we do them because patients should be cared for. Going to the dentist may not be high on most people’s lists of favorite activities, including my own, but we strive to make the experience as comfortable and positive as possible. We want to provide you with an experience that’s worth raving about to friends and family members. To us, there’s no better sign that we are accomplishing our practice mission.

THE HEART-HEALTHY LIFESTYLE

Improve Your Health With the Mediterranean Diet

there are still a lot of misconceptions surrounding this lifestyle change. Many people believe it costs a small fortune. However, if you craft meals with beans or lentils as your main source of protein and eat mostly plants and whole grains, the Mediterranean diet is far less expensive than processed foods. Some Mediterranean diet enthusiasts may believe that if a daily glass of wine is good for your heart, then three glasses per day is okay, too. While moderate amounts of red wine certainly have unique heart benefits, drinking too much has the opposite effect. The Mayo Clinic recommends no more than 5 ounces of wine daily for women and men over 65, and no more than 10 ounces per day for those under 65. Anything more is bad for your heart. But even if you switch over to Mediterranean-friendly recipes, your work doesn’t stop there. It’s also important to mirror the other ways Mediterraneans live their lives. When it’s time to eat, don’t rush or watch TV. Sit down, relax, and enjoy a leisurely meal with others. And of course, get plenty of exercise.

Nuts and seeds

Legumes and beans

Calorie-cutting diets have become a thing of the past. Instead of depriving our bodies of nutrients, we’ve turned to lifestyle changes. Losing weight and reaching a healthy nutritional balance isn’t easy, and a few months of eating 1,000 calories per day just doesn’t cut it. Enter the Mediterranean diet, a lifestyle change that’s become quite popular and effective. This diet is inspired by the traditional eating habits of people in Southern Italy, Greece, Turkey, and Spain. According to the Mayo Clinic, it is a realistic and sustainable way to reduce disease-causing inflammation and lose weight, and it is one of the most heart-conscious ways of eating.

Whole grains

Wild-caught fish and seafood

High-quality, pasture-raised poultry, eggs, cheese, goat milk, and yogurt

Red meat, but only on special occasions

Daily glasses of red wine

Following the Mediterranean diet has many benefits. The Mayo Clinic credits this lifestyle with reduced incidences of cancer and Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases. In addition, women who eat a Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra-virgin olive oil and mixed nuts may have a reduced risk of breast cancer. But

be placed in about 30 minutes. When there is not sufficient bone to support an implant, additional procedures are required. Once an implant has been placed, your jaw will need time to naturally grow bone to encompass the implant. After a period of time, we will make a crown in the shape of your original tooth and attach it to the secured implant, restoring natural appearance and function. Dental implants allow you to replace teeth without needing to perform surgery on adjacent teeth. Most patients experience no pain or downtime after dental implant surgery. With our board-certified periodontist and expert team, you can be sure you’re getting the best dental implants available. We strive to make you feel comfortable during every step of the process and ensure you receive the results you desire. And as with all our operative procedures, you can expect a personal call from Dr. Reit, making sure you’re feeling great about your implant and experience.

Missing teeth can affect your self- confidence and your ability to enjoy your favorite foods. In the past, replacing these teeth was costly and time-intensive, and the results were less than perfect. But with the advent of advanced dental implants, you can now receive replacements that look and function like your original teeth. Our implants are placed by a board- certified periodontist, which is a dentist with advanced training in placing implants and performing gum surgeries. All of our implant procedures begin with a consultation that explains your treatment options. Generally, implant surgeries will consist of replacing one tooth, but we can place multiple implants for patients missing more than one tooth. Though we favor titanium implants for their strength, we have non-metal options as well. If there is enough bone to the hold implant, it can

UGLY SWEATER PARTIES

A Fun Trend You Can Easily Follow!

party. A few ugly-sweater-themed games that should be on the agenda include an ugly gift exchange, which is similar to the white elephant exchange, except with the gaudiest gifts you can find; an ugly photo booth, complete with terrible, tacky props; and, of course, an ugly sweater contest. This is the only time of year when slipping into a lurid red sweater with a stuffed Santa sewn on the front is considered trendy. So adorn yourself in the frumpiest, tackiest sweater you can find, and have some fun this December!

It’s speculated that the first ugly sweater party took place in Vancouver, Canada, back in 2001. Since then, the trend has become one of the most popular holiday party themes. Come Thanksgiving, you’ll start to see racks in all types of clothing stores lined with hideous sweaters. If you’re ready to jump on the ugly-sweater- party bandwagon this Christmas season, here are a few things to keep in mind. Ugly sweaters come in all shapes, sizes, and prices. You can head to H&M or a local thrift store to pick one up. However, if you have a sweater that’s been cozied up for years in the back of your closet or a drawer, now’s your chance to give it new life. Arm yourself with a hot glue gun, thread, and needle, and patch Santa, Rudolph, or Frosty on it. And let it be known that an ugly sweater isn’t complete without sparkles, beads, and sequins galore. YOUR VERY OWN UGLY SWEATER

WHAT EXACTLY IS AN UGLY SWEATER PARTY?

It’s rather simple — slip on your favorite Christmas sweater, gather all your friends and family members, make sure there are plenty of refreshments and games, and you’re guaranteed to have a top-tier

DR. REIT’S WINTER FAVORITES The Best of the Season in NYC

A LATE-NIGHT BURGER AND DRINK AT J.G. MELON

There are enough unique experiences in New York City to fill many, many lifetimes — that’s one of the joys of living here. While there’s always something new and exciting to check out, I find myself turning to old favorites during the holidays. Here are a few winter adventures that I look forward to every year.

I didn’t choose our practice location because it’s walking distance from my favorite burger joint, but I’m certainly not mad about it. After a long shift, the iconic green awnings are a welcome sight. Once inside, it’s all about a classic cocktail, their iconic burger, and a bowl of cottage fries. Like all great late-night spots, it’s open until 4 a.m, making it a beacon for weary New Yorkers in search of something comforting and delicious.

AN AFTERNOON WALK THROUGH CENTRAL PARK

SUNDAY MORNING BRUNCH AT BARNEY GREENGRASS When you can be cash-only in 2018, you know you have a dedicated fan base. Eating at Barney Greengrass is a New York rite of passage on the level of walking the Brooklyn Bridge, so don’t expect the deli that’s been around since 1908 to accept Apple Pay anytime soon. Go for the smoked sturgeon; stay for one of the best brunch experiences in the city.

Central Park may be a headline tourist attraction, but it’s just as cherished by locals — and never more so than during this time of the year. There are few more magical sights than the park when fresh snow has just fallen, when it’s still untouched by the masses. It’s certainly worth bundling up to take in Central Park during the winter.
