As I embark on my exciting journey of launching a start-up, I have been thinking about what makes a good—and successful— leader. Having worked at four different companies over the decades, I have seen many great initiatives launched, like the Leadership Principles at Amazon, the 4Es (Energy, Energize, Edge, Execute) during Jack Welch’s time at GE and the three values (Simple, Open & Integrated) during the Dave Calhoun era at Nielsen. I have also been thinking about which core skills are key to success in the digital information age—in which products are launched fast and markets whipsaw—and settled on five: the ability to take risks (R) and be empathetic (E), analytical (A), communicative (C) and hungry (H). In other words, you have to be willing to “REACH” to grow.
