Instilling a Work Ethic at a Young Age
Entering the workforce for the first time is as instructive as it is nerve-wracking. But the thing is, your first job — no matter how ridiculous — is going to stick with you for the rest of your life. It’s going to teach you things you wouldn’t learn anywhere else, and to a certain extent, it can shape the person you become later on in your professional life. Your first job teaches you the importance of showing up on time, keeping to a schedule, completing a list of tasks, and being held accountable for your actions to management if you make any mistakes. These skills can be essential in your growing professional career. Most of us get jobs when we are fairly young. I was employed at my first job when I was 12 or 13 years old. While my family was stationed near Frankfurt, Germany, I worked in a military office as an intern, or a gofer, as some would call it. Office intern and gofer go hand-in-hand; it was basically a position where I carried out errands or tasks they asked of me. Whether it was fixing the fax machine, unjamming the printer, making coffee, or building a Weber grill — which at one point, they actually asked me to do — I was on top of it as the gofer.
One essential skill I learned while working in that office was to follow through with whatever you agree to. Even if you aren’t sure how long it will take or what exactly it will entail, once you make that deal, it’s important to keep that promise. One time, I accidentally left a long-distance call on hold for an entire hour. The military uses a phone system that allows you to call from a base to a different location or region, and I had received a call from someone out in California. When I put them on hold to find whomever they were calling for, I got distracted and completely forgot about them. They stayed on the line for the entire hour because the call was so important, and I felt so guilty they had waited that long because of me. That unfortunate experience reinforced the importance of staying true to my word, and I continue to do so now. You can always learn something in every opportunity you’re given. By working behind the scenes of a job and developing essential skills, you set yourself up for success down the road.

I worked in the military office to get a better understanding of what it meant to actually have a job. I wanted to know the ins and outs of responsibility and accountability, which was a bit of a learning curve at such a young age. Though I wasn’t doing traditional work with real customers per se, I still immersed myself in their work culture and learned lifelong skills from some great coworkers.

So, never be afraid to get personal — it’s one of the keys to success.

What makes you special and unique? Why should customers use your services rather than the competitors? By developing skills to personalize your brand, you allow your customers access to your life. How do you create a personal brand? If you have a website, blog, newsletter, or social media platform, you can use these resources to share stories about yourself and your life. Only get as personal as you want — it’s all up to you! Sharing personal stories creates incredible professional content. For example, you can discuss why you started your business and what experiences led you to take that particular career path. Or share a story that ties into one of your products or services. This form of branding personally ties you to what you offer to customers, which

NOT JUST A LANGUAGE TOOL THE HISTORY BEHIND THE REAL ROSETTA STONE
Before we had Rosetta Stone, the language- learning software, scholars were confounded by the original Rosetta Stone: a slab of granite from Ancient Egypt inscribed with mysterious symbols. The slab was discovered in 1799 by a group of French army engineers near the Egyptian town of Rosetta. The British
claimed the stone after winning the French Revolutionary Wars and relocated it to the British Museum in London, where they strengthened the floors to support its incredible weight. Various scientists studied the artifact with no success, until it was ultimately deciphered by French linguist Jean-Francois Champollion. The stone was covered in a combination of hieroglyphics, ancient Greek, and Demotic. It spelled out a decree issued in 196 B.C. by Egypt’s ruler at the time, Ptolemy V, and a group of Egyptian clergy members. Because of his discovery, Champollion was named the founding father of Egyptology. You can still visit the stone at the British Museum in London, where it’s been displayed for 220 years!
