(AND ALMOST LOST IT!) I Scored an Incredible Prize on Black Friday
Twenty years ago, my wife Gina and I scored the Black Friday deal of the century — and we didn’t even get up early to do it! In fact, we weren’t Black Friday shopping at all. The whole thing started when we got the brilliant idea to paint a wall in our house during the Thanksgiving holiday. After the Black Friday rush died down, we headed to Menards (the Home Depot/Lowe’s of the Midwest) to find some paint. That’s when we saw it: There was a big, shiny yellow go-kart on display in the paint section. It looked just like an Indy 500 race car! We got closer to the thing and I realized the paint company Glidden was raffling it off for the holiday. Now, I didn’t need a go-kart one bit. My oldest daughter was about 9 at the time, and my youngest wasn’t even born yet. But my need for speed got the best of me. I thought, “Why the heck not put my name in?” While Gina shopped for paint, I filled out the little card, dropped it in the box, and promptly forgot about it. The two of us went home, painted the wall, and had a great Christmas. There were no dreams of yellow go-karts dancing in my head. I didn’t think about the raffle once. But near the end of January, the phone rang while Gina and I were sitting in the kitchen.
Right away I knew it was a spam call.
“Just hang up,” I told her. “It’s a scam! They’re going to try and get your credit card.”
All of the roads were poured and there wasn’t a soul around, so the teenagers floored the kart up and down the street! I’ll never forget the day Mallory’s friend Kelly lost control, hit a curb, and flew through the air — only to land nose first in the mud like something out of a kids’ cartoon. She was bawling her head off and I was terrified at the time, but fortunately, nobody got hurt. These days my kids are all grown up and no one drives the go-kart any more, but believe it or not, the thing is still sitting in my garage under an inch of dust. To this day, it’s the best Black Friday bargain I’ve ever scored.
Gina ignored me and kept talking to the guy on the other end of the line. By this time, I was getting pretty grouchy. I thought for sure she was falling for a salesman’s b.s.
“Gina, hang up the dang phone!” I said.
Finally, she covered up the mouthpiece and gave me a look, “Darin, this isn’t a scam. It’s Glidden paint — we won the go-kart!” I couldn’t believe it. Not only was the call legitimate, but all we had to do was take care of the tax. I borrowed a pickup from a friend, and after a lot of huffing and puffing, we loaded the thing up and brought it home. The kart was a real showstopper: 10 feet wide and 6 feet long from tire to tire. I barely fit in the kart’s low seat, but somehow I squeezed in with my 9-year-old, Mallory, on my lap and taught her how to drive it. Oh, man, did she and her friends have fun! They went absolutely wild with the go-kart a few years later when we moved into a new house next to a neighborhood under construction.
So, this is my Black Friday wisdom for you:
1. When you run into a drawing, always put your name in. 2. For the next two months, answer all of those spam calls — just in case.
Happy shopping!
P.S. Stay tuned for a great last-minute stocking stuffer idea in next month’s newsletter. –Darin Garman

HOLIDAY SEA
DURING THE
The holiday season can be expensive. Sure, you might describe this time of year with less cynical words like “magical” or “warm,” but unfortunately, most stores don’t accept magic or warmth as legal tender. Whether it be for gifts or for holiday meals and treats, most people want to get the most for their money while saving their time and energy. That’s what makes comparison shopping in the age of technology so worthwhile. In case you didn’t already guess its meaning, “comparison shopping” is simply when you compare prices of the same or similar products at different stores or online retailers. You’ve probably done comparison shopping without knowing you were doing it. However, once you truly embrace the concept, you can increase your savings. Plus, by using the bevy of online
price comparison tools, you can do so without scrambling around to every store in town.
If you want to comparison shop like a champ this holiday season, here are a few general tips.
Be wary of markups. Black Friday can leave you feeling frenzied, and that’s not always when stores have their best deals. In fact, many of them mark up their prices (sometimes “discounting” them back to their regular price) in preparation for that day. It’s a good rule of thumb to be wary of massive “sales” at big retail locations. If you want to know where you can compare prices, take a look at any one of these apps: Google Shopping, PriceGrabber, Shopping.com, Idealo, Shopzilla, BuyVia, NowDiscount, ScanLife, or ShopSavvy.
The best deal isn’t always the lowest price. If you’re buying gifts online, be sure to take shipping costs into account. They might end up making the cheaper option more expensive in the end. You should also take a look at the return fees, in case these could drive the price up significantly. Look at the per unit price for food. If you’re buying groceries for Thanksgiving dinner, sometimes the item that’s more expensive at face value is actually cheaper per unit. That can mean you’ll save money overall by buying in bulk.
Got Too Much Mail?
The truth is, some people just don’t relate to investment expansion and protection. Some people are just not “my kind of people.” What we do is not for everybody. I get that. Some people get tired of seeing opportunities in their mailbox every month. That is okay with me because, frankly, I don’t want everybody. I only want investors who “get it.” I want people who “get” what we are doing, why it is so important to their wealth and investment future, and how it can be among the best investment tools in their tool box — especially over the next 3–5 years! For me, the mail I send out is NOT ABOUT THE NUMBER OF SUBSCRIBERS. It is about sharing the value of doing business with me and hundreds of other investors here in the Heartland. Do you “get it”? If you’re NOT interested in learning more about leveling up your wealth, no problem. You can unsubscribe at any time with my best wishes. Just remember that you may miss out on the investment of a lifetime. If you DO want to build your wealth and continue receiving opportunities in your mailbox, stay tuned. Our opportunities will get even better as 2021 progresses into 2022, despite the challenges of a possible surge of COVID-19. It will be quite a ride.
THINK TWICE BEFORE UNSUBSCRIBING FROM OPPORTUNITY
I had a meeting with my staff today about mail — specifically, about YOU and the mail you get from me, including this newsletter. They were concerned about the large number of folks “unsubscribing” from my mailing list. Apparently, some people were even complaining about the mail they received. My team thought this was a crisis! What was my response?
“I don’t care.”
“What?” they asked, as if they didn’t hear me.
“I don’t care,” I said. “If people want to unsubscribe and move on, or even complain, I am actually just fine with that.”
–Darin
At first, they could not believe it. But after I settled them down, I explained where I was coming from. The mail I send out is all about furthering my mission. And that mission is simply to expand the income, wealth, protection, and risk mitigation of investors like YOU by sharing opportunities to own your own apartment communities here in the Heartland.
P.S. If you haven’t already, reach out to me today to make sure I have you on the list of people to contact about our next apartment investment opportunity. I don’t want anyone who “gets it” to miss out!

Black Friday’s massive sales, doorbuster prizes, and long lines hide a secret: They began with an economic crisis. It happened more than 150 years ago on Sept. 24, 1869, and retailers have been cashing in on it ever since. The story could have come straight from “The Wolf of Wall Street.” Back in the 1860s, two shady financiers had made a plan to corner the gold market. They bought as much gold as they could and got involved in politics, hoping to halt sales and drive up gold prices. Their scheme went well until President Ulysses S. Grant got wind of it.

Grant was furious! To show them who was boss and reverse their gains, he ordered the sale of $4 million in government gold.

Grant’s good intentions backfired. As one PBS article puts it, “When the government gold hit the market, so did panic.” Gold prices took a nosedive and everyone scrambled to sell. The market crashed down 20% on Sept. 24 and the sale of commodities dropped 50%. Thousands of investors defaulted on their loans and fell into financial ruin. So many families were impacted that the day became known as “The Panic of 1869” or more simply “Black Friday.” Here’s the funny thing about this story: It didn’t take long for savvy advertisers to use the history of Black Friday to their advantage! And it all started in the Midwest. In 1891, People’s Mammoth Installment House in Omaha, Nebraska, was perhaps the first store to compare its upcoming fall sale to the horrors of Black Friday. “Prices of furniture will topple and fall …” they wrote. “For years to come, this barbarous butchery of prices and values, this marvelous and merciless massacre of house furnishings goods, shall be known in the history of Omaha as ‘The People’s Black Friday Sale.’” Iowa shops weren’t far behind! That same year, T.S. Martin and Co. in Sioux City also held a Black Friday sale using the same analogy to sell stockings, corsets, gloves, and more. Today, most of us have forgotten what Medium calls the “dark and twisted” history of Black Friday, but it’s still lurking behind every doorbuster. If you score big this year, thank the schemers of 1869!

3 Goals Every
GOAL NO. 1: GET A LIFE You are more than the company you started. Plus, having hobbies or personal interests outside of your work can help you excel in work. It allows your brain to grow in new ways, sparking fresh ideas and perspectives. Consider activities that you’re interested in learning more about — like painting, podcasting, reading, or running — and get started. Maybe you’ll fail, but just keep trying! You may find a new activity that brings you the joy you need. GOAL NO. 2: SAVE MORE Many of the dimes you earn as a business owner go back into the company, but don’t forget to consider your future. Is your retirement plan in order? Do you have a plan should your company need to close? Will your family be secure? Consider these questions and hire a trusted financial advisor who can help you find personal investment success. GOAL NO. 3: MEET NEW PEOPLE Becoming inundated by daily, menial tasks can make us miss opportunities. This is where meeting new people can be so valuable! By doing so, you create a network of people who have different experiences than your own. They can help you see beyond your biases and discover a new path. Who knows? You just might find the next great venture for your company!
By now, you should have an idea of what you want your business to achieve in 2022, but have you considered how you will grow during that year — and the impact that could have on your business? Often, entrepreneurs and business leaders take on the identity of their companies, but in order to personally thrive and see their companies take off, they have to grow right alongside it.
To do so, consider these goals all entrepreneurs must focus on at some point in their careers.
