From the Headmaster

S pring Termbeganwith the completion of the play-ground re-development and a new chapter in the life of the School. The significantly enhanced space has opened up, not only a larger play area, but also new opportunities for creativity and learning. I have many fond memories of the children using that space for personal freedom of expression but want to highlight three of my favourites: firstly, children and staff using the covered amphitheatre seating area for teaching and learning; secondly, the personal enjoyment I had from watching a Nursery class playing hide and seek for the very first-time, engaged as they were, exploring hidden spaces and As our pupils set-off on their spring break this allows me a slight moment to pause for reflection on yet another busy term at Hendon Prep.

thirdly, gazing through a classroomwindow to observe children engrossed in a game of chess, played, with such intensity, that it equally became compelling to watch them and even delight in their competitive spirit. Particular mention in this last regard must go to Mr Shaw, who has single-handedly revived chess-playing at Hendon Prep and taken it to new heights with lunch-time competitions taking place both indoors and out! One of the most significant developments this term has been the transformation of School sport by Mr May (Deputy Head Academic) who has raised the quality of curriculum P.E./Games provision throughout the school. On the latter point, I want to single out the support we have received from staff and senior girls, coaching hockey during Games afternoons on Fridays, which is in addition to the on-going weekly support we receive from Non Stop Action: www.nonstopaction.co.uk who continue to support our sporting development at Hendon Prep. As Headmaster, I want all our children to develop their physical literacy skills across a wider range of sporting options available

to pupils from Nursery to Year 8. Unfortunately, Hendon Prep had forgotten the importance of sporting competition for children, so we are now re-building our traditional sporting fixture card and, at the same time, teaching the next generation of sports stars how to develop their skills in order to compete. This desire to raise the level of opportunities for pupils is equal to my ambition to significantly improve the quality of learning that a child receives at Hendon Prep. We are fully committed to deliver a personalised learning programme for every child. My staff have been working hard to change the curriculumwith the desire to develop an enquiry based learning approach to lessons. Our focus is on the quality of feed-back a child receives. In short, I want our pupils to become more self-directed in their learning and to become intellectually independent. At the same time, I want our students to be confident critical-thinkers, far less dependent on teachers for knowledge and have greater autonomy over their own learning. Ultimately, those students who develop these skills become more effective life-long learners and achievers. We have already witnessed evidence of such achievement with pupils in our NACE (www.nace.co.uk/node/24) accredited programme for our most able students led by Mrs Stirling (Deputy Head Individual Needs). These pupils exhibit learning skills and qualities we are seeking to promote throughout Hendon Prep but in particular in those who we have identified as our top performers. To that end, we invited Clifton Lodge Prep to compete in an afternoon of challenges during Science Week, most encouragingly Hendon Prep proved to be slightly more successful. On a more personal note, I was delighted to witness our young scientists sharing evidence of their research and experimentations to an audience of eager listeners during a senior prep assembly. What impressed me most about these erudite presentations is that students were confident and enjoyed displaying their newly acquired knowledge. As Headmaster, the best evidence of a school’s success is in the results the pupils achieve, in our context, this is at 11+ and 13+. I am delighted to record that our pupils continue to do exceptionally well and to receive offers from top independent and selective state schools. This is testimony to the hard work of all our pupils and to the great support they receive from the staff who work tirelessly to enable our children to fulfil their potential. This term, we have begun amore comprehensive programme of English andMathematics preparation for our 11+/Y5 students. This complements our non-verbal reasoning/critical-thinking and interview skills lessons that already exist. The ambition is not to over pressurise our pupils for the Autumn and early spring examinations but to enable children to feel better

As Headmaster, I want all our children to develop

their physical literacy skills across a wider

prepared and confident about their ability to do well. Equally, for the staff team to offer more effective guidance to parents with regard to the ‘best fit’ senior schools for each child. I want to share with parents news that I have been elected to membership of The Independent Association of Prep Schools (IAPS): www.iaps.uk/ This is not the first occasion that a Head at Hendon Prep has been invited to be a member of this global association of leading independent prep schools but I am the first Head since the School was acquired by Cognita Schools Group. Do take the opportunity to look at the IAPS website for more information. May I take this opportunity to say a fond farewell to all our leavers who will be moving to new schools for the start of next term, whether in theUKor abroad. Youwill begreatlymissedand remembered for enriching the School with your presence. To all our children and staff, have a restful and restorative spring break. range of sporting options available to pupils from Nursery to Year 8

“I like the new chess pieces and chess board because they help to improve my knowledge and learn about chess”. Sumayyah

As you will all no doubt have noticed by now the big news at the start of the Spring Termwas the completion of our fabulous new playground. The children simply love their new space which has completely revolutionised playtimes! New For Spring:

We are so very proud of our Year 6 girls and boys who recently sat 11 + entrance examinations. The way in which they applied themselves and remained calm during what can be a very gruelling process has been very impressive indeed. And their efforts have certainly paid off as they have received offers from some of the most selective schools in the country. Examination Success New Faces:

Spring Term also saw a number of new faces around the school as we welcomed the following teachers to Hendon Prep:

children also planting raspberries as well. To supplement their learning the children also planted some sunflower seeds, peas and various flowers in the classroom, which they are now carefully monitoring. One week in and some seeds have already germinated. The children are particularly enjoying watching the sunflowers grow and measuring them regularly. Saho’s is currently the tallest!

Spring has finally sprung and the Reception children have started planting in their fabulous new outdoor space. They wanted to have some pretty flowers but also some yummy treats to eat for later in the year, and so they all worked together to move the soil from one part of the playground to another using a wheelbarrow. At first they were not too sure how to balance it on one wheel but they soon got the hang of it. The children planted a strawberry plant each with some of the Chess success Chess is thriving at Hendon Prep. Mr Shaw’s Thursday lunchtime drop-in is proving to be a huge success with record attendances on a weekly basis. The new giant chess pieces in the playground are also much in demand and have seen some rather tense matches developing during break times.

visit to theMulberry House School Junior Chess Tournament. Hendon came first in the tournament and brought home a new cup for our display cabinet! Many congratulations to Rebecca, Joseph, Yuuki and Lior. All the children played some great chess, winning the majority of their games. They behaved superbly and were a true credit to Hendon Prep.

The big success of the Spring Term however was the Junior chess squad’s triumphant

Charity Support We were delighted to have supported some fabulous charities during the spring term and, as a result of the children’s significant efforts, and parents’ generous support, managed to raise the following amounts: NSPCC: £1,743 Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s charity: £112.20 Comic Relief: £311.35 Well done everyone! Visitors We are very fortunate to have a steady stream of visitors to the school to enrich our children’s learning. Nursery had a visit in February from Mrs Chen, Mrs Chen and Mrs Jin to talk to the children about Chinese New Year and how they celebrate.

Book Week This year was the 20th Anniversary of World Book Day and at Hendon Prep we celebrated with a full week of activities and events. The week started with the launch our new Buddy Reading Scheme when the senior pupils read to the younger members of the school. Both parties loved the new initiative, which is definitely here to stay! Book Week also saw the finals of the Reading Cup Competition. The standards were incredibly high this year however in the end, of course, we had to choose two winners and so huge congratulations, a book prize and those all-important house points go to ...

Later in the term they also had a visit from Jacob’s Dad, Mr Zubaida who read them the story of Curious George.

Winner Juniors: Sauren

Winner Seniors: Yusuf

Year 1 were so excited to see their visitors from Zoo 4 You. They talked about the different types of animals and what differentiates a mammal from a reptile and an insect. The children were super brave, and very gentle, when handling the animals themselves. Mrs Gopal and Mrs Rosen didn’t want to touch the snake or the rat though!

Congratulations also to the fabulous runners up; Eshan in Juniors and Dilpreet in Seniors and a massive well done too to everyone who entered.

World Book Day

The culmination of our BookWeek is always themuch loved World BookDay when children and teachers dress up as their favourite character froma book. We are always impressed by the sheer creativeness of our children (and parents) on this daywhenwe have a school full of colourful characters …andmore than a smattering of wizards!

Sport

The Spring Term saw a huge change in the way sport is delivered at Hendon Prep with the introduction of specialist sports provision fromNon Stop Action.

Street Dance

Non Stop Action have over a decade of experience in delivering high quality Physical Education in schools. They have a track record for improving both the attainment of children in Physical Education, and the confidence and competence of teachers they work with to deliver high quality outcomes that focus on developing the Physical Literacy of every child. At the end of British ScienceWeek Years 7&8 took part in the FloatingGarden Challengewhich is a STEMChallenge that addresses how food can be grown on land that is flooded in Bangladesh The problem: as a result of climate change there ismore rain in Bangladesh than ever before. Landwhere farmers used to grow their crops is nowflooded on a regular basis. The result is families go hungry. The challenge: to design and build a model structure that will enable farmers to grow crops even in an area that may become flooded. Year 7 and 8worked hard on their floating gardens tomaximise the up-thrust andmeet the specifications.

Break time snacks Pupils are allowed to bring in a healthy snack for morning break however please remember that the school operates a very strict no nut policy. If you would like more information on this please see the school office. Breakfast Club Children from Reception upwards can join us for a healthy breakfast in the school hall from 7.30am. The children are served a selection of cereals and toast, milk and water. Once they have eaten they start there days with some quizzes and news programmes. A drop in session

Reception:

Reception also took part in British ScienceWeek and were very busy making experiments and observing the outcomes. They tried two different recipes in an attempt to make their own slime. The first one simply didn’t work however luckily the second one did. That is sometimes the way with science and experiments but the children had lots of fun anyway. RP also manged to get some frog spawn so that they can observe the lifecycle of a frog. The tadpoles have now hatched and they can see some gills. The children have told us that they will keep you informed about their progress.

Year 6went to St Albans Cathedral.Wewere going there to learn about the Tudors andwhat lifewas like for them. Let me tell you some things that happened throughout this exciting day. At first we had a quick tour of the building. Did you know that most of it was burnt down and only themain building survived? It was astonishing howbig the cathedral was.We all got to dress up asmonks after the tour andwe all played different roles. I was a Cellarer. Our Year 5 and 6 group travelled toKidzania on Thursday 9thMarch.Wewere all excited. The concept of Kidzania is to experience real life jobs so that kids can decidewhat they want to bewhen they are older. You get to do all sorts of jobs like a fireman, a police officer, awindowcleaner, a football player etc. When you enter Kidzania theymake youwear awrist bandwhich has your coded details. Theway that Kidzaniaworks is that you go and look around for jobs and earningmoney in return. If you have enoughKidzos (the currency) you could go to the department store and trade them in for real life prizes. I foundKidzania so fun and enjoyable and I hope to go backwithmy family. Focus on Year 3

There has been a lot of change in Year 3 this year, with two new teachers and newpupils joining the classes they have had a very busy term indeed. The children have all worked really hard though and embraced the changes that the Spring Termbrought, enjoyed some hugely creative lessons and produced some fantasticwork along theway. Year 3 started the term learning about the earth and its core. The children worked independently to create a project about the inside of the earth and produced 3Dmodels of what the inside of the corewould look like and then presented them to the rest of the school during assembly.

It was fun it took a long time but was fun. I enjoyed showing everyone in assembly - Adam It was fun, but frustrating because it took a long time, but it was worth it! - Eliora It was helpful to understandmore about the earth’s core andwhat it looks like - Shinji &Hinata

They then repeated the experimentwith scruncheduppieces of paper andaflat pieceof paper. Itwas important tomake it a fair test so they

InEnglish the children readFantasticMr Fox and actedout parts of thebook. They alsowrotediary entries in character and createda ‘wanted’ poster for thedastardlyMr Fox! InMaths the focus has beenonnumber operations and challenging real lifemaths problems. Oneof the challenges the children were setwas to turn the classroominto a ‘shop’. Childrenhaddifferentwordproblems to solve basedon the cost of a varietyof objects. Sciencehas beenvery exciting this termwith numerous experiments and investigations. The children found the lessons on friction andair resistance fascinating. When looking at friction,

very carefullymeasured theheight of thedrop andkept it consistent throughout. Ask your childrenwhat they discoveredduring these tests!

Science is so fun because you get to learn things for yourself - Kenshin One of Year 3’s favourite days was a Science investigationwhich involvedmaking slime. All the childrenmade predictions onwhat would happenwhen cornflower ismixedwith liquid and using prior knowledge assumed it would dissolve and turn it to liquid. Theywere amazed and astonished to find that it actually turned into slime.

which included lots of drama and tension. The ancient Greeks would have been proud!

Ancient Greece has been the history focus for the Spring Term. The children have learned all about democracy, Alexander theGreat, the Olympics and the TrojanWar. This also tied inwith one of the English themes for the termonGreekMyths. After reading several different myths, one of their favourites being Jason and the Golden Fleece, the childrenwrote their ownmagical myth. They took their time and produced detailed descriptive pieces of work Best day ever - Eshan I loved everything, but especially dressing up as a goddess - Amanya I thought theGreek foodwas really tasty and it was so fun to do pretendOlympics! - Sauren I loved the fact that we got to dress up and tell each other whowewere - Adam

And finally…… We simply love hearing fromoldHendonians and sowere delighted to receive the following email on the very last day of the Spring Term from former Head Boy, Keval Dattani: Dear Team, I hopeyouarewell andare looking forward to theupcomingEaster break. Iwaswalkinghome froma runaroundSunnyHill Parkandbumped intoa familywhohad just come fromHendon Prep. As Iwalkedpast, themother recognised mequitequickly (I left in2008!) andasked howIwas doing. It’s pretty clear tome that the cultureof the school is the same as it always has beenand I

To celebrate the end of their Ancient Greek topic Year 3 had aGreekDay. They sampled someGreek food, staged their ownOlympic Games and, after some research intoGreek Theatre, made their ownmasks using a balloon and papier mache.

Finally the children simply loved studying the work of Picasso, which resulted in themdrawing abstract self-portraits in his famous cubist style. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed being creative and used vibrant colours tomake the pictures look bold and powerful.

hopeyoukeepupwhat you’redoing so it doesn’t change in the future! Best wishes, Keval Dattani
