HER MAJ ESTY’ S TREASURE
WELCOME
C rafts perennity over the centuries is a source of fascination and inspiration. Generation after generation, makers enthrall and enchant us. The objects of our daily lives send a powerful message about who we are and once they are passed on, they are the repository of our stories. Join me on this three- day cultural voyage to discover the extraordinary life of Margherita de Austria through her objects and learn how the crafts of her belongings have evolved over the centuries. Follow me. - ISABELLE
MEET OUR MUSE “Margherita of Austria, one of the noblest women in Renaissance Europe, died in a little town in central Italy surrounded by only a handful of the thousands of beautiful objects she collected throughout her life,” explains renaissance crafts historian, Irene Galandra Cooper. “Like many of us, Margherita was a woman who expressed her identity and varying emotions through the objects she adorned herself with, or those that she kept around her home.” By look- ing at the list of her belongings contained in the inven- tory drawn after her death, Irene will take us on a trail of discovery to find out more about past and present crafts. On this virtual trip, we travel across the globe, from South America, to India, and Europe, to explore the origins of Margherita’s marvellous objects, like her feather artworks, her coconut and nautilus shells, as well as those glistening precious stones and rock crys- tal beauties she owned. However, the journey will not end in the past. Each day we visit the studios of crafts- men and craftswomen, artists and makers who still work with the same materials, use the same tools and share the same skills, and create modern and beautiful objects of art for us all to treasure for centuries.
PS : I want to thank Goldsmiths’ Fair for sponsoring Her Majesty’s Treasure virtual adventure. I also welcome historian Irene Galandra Cooper who will be our virtual guide. She was the Interim Deputy Curator of the Goldsmith’s Company.

SILVER TALES Margherita collected objects that told a story of faraway lands set in a distant past. We will meet modern-day storyteller and enameller Tamar De Vries Winter in her Cambridge studio. Tamar also infuses her objects with stories using diaries and photos. She was born in Jerusalem to a family of immigrants from Europe, but later moved to the UK where she trained as a jeweller-designer. Today she lives and practices her craft which is inspired by two cultures with their own rich histories of tradition.
CAMBRIDGE Friday, March 19
“A strong easterly wind is blowing from the sea.” These are the words that fill the entry of Margherita’s diary for the 4th November 1583 on the night she landed in Ortona, a very small town in the Italian region of Abruzzo within what was the Kingdom of Naples.

LECTURE: MEET MARGHERITA Many historians have studied the life of Margherita of Austria as the daughter, alas illegitimate, of the Emperor Charles V, as the wife of Ottavio Farnese, Duke of Parma, and as the mother of Alessandro Farnese. Always shadowed by these men, her decision to leave the pomp and magnifi- cence of the European courts for a life by the Italian sea has always been seen as a strange, yet non important, line at the end of her life’s story. But the reading of her letters, her diary entries, and a more attentive study of all those objects she carried with her to Ortona have opened up her world of a Renaissance woman with a great passion for beauty, and a heart full of love for more than just her husband and son. In this first lecture you will be introduced to her world so that together we can start a journey back in time, towards a salon in a Renaissance palazzo on the Italian seaside.

MAZZANTI PIUME FEATHER CRAFT
Feather arts was discovered by the Spanish during the South American conquest. Appropriating the art from the Aztec empire, brightly coloured feathers from exotic birds were used to decorate objects and later entered the world of European fashion. A third generation feather atelier, Mazzanti Piume is nestled in a small space in Florence where the bambini (as the ladies who work at the atelier are still referred to) create magical fashion accessories for the luxury maisons and ballroom dancers all over the world.

ARTIST Andrea Salvatori - witty ceramicist Andrea Salvatori’s studio is located “somewhere in Romagna” where he creates ironic and witty ceramic sculptures, sometimes involving a diverse selection of found objects such as Murano glass vases, Meissen porcelain miniatures or Ginori period ceramics sourced in flea markets around Europe. His work is unique, with an engaging pop culture and kitschy aesthetic.

FRATELLI TRAVERSARI MOSAICI – the craft of mosaics Do hard stones still bear hidden meaning and powers? Could we seek to own and behold something similar to what Margherita displayed and looked at in her Renaissance Palazzo? Join us for a conversation, and live demonstration, with one of the last families still working the craft of the Florentine commesso as well as other mosaic techniques. We’ll meet them in their studio set in the centre of Florence, amid those same streets where Margherita walked and fell in love with these marvelous mosaics.

STUDIO BERENGO – glass blowers Alongside themysterious, natural beauty of rock crystal lies the one of amanmadematter: glass. Its transformative nature fascinatedMargherita andmany other curious minds of Renaissance Europe, Unfortunately, its ephemeral nature of breakability means that only a handful of damaged objects still survive. In order to assess and understand the beauty of suchmaterial, we are travelling to the place where it was invented: the island of Murano outside Venice. We talk with, and watch, a glassmaker as he creates what only contemporary artists can achieve: wonderous sculptures out of dust and fire. We will meet artist in residence, Maria Kazoun, who is fromCanada. We are hosted by the Berengo Studio, Fondazione Berengo and Glasstress: a glass studio, an art foundation and an internationally acclaimed exhibition. The three essential components that make up the Berengo universe, a place where artists, designers and creatives fromevery discipline create innovative works in glass, and together write a new chapter in the history of this ancient and beguilingmedium.

PALAZZO GRIMANI – A RESTORATION AND EXHIBTION PROJECT BY FOUNDATION VENETIAN HERITAGE. WE TOUR THE PALAZZO WITH TOTO BERGAMO ROSSI , DIRECTOR OF THE FOUNDATION After more than 400 years, the inestimable collection of the Patriarch of Aquileia, Giovanni Grimani, returns to its Venetian home. The reconstruction of his awe-
inspiring ‘Chamber of Antiquities’, is a visionary setting for his unparalleled collection. Palazzo Grimani, originally purchased by the Doge Antonio, who established the Grimani family in the parish of Santa Maria Formosa, is a rare and precious gem. It features unique architecture, evoking the ancient Roman domus and Renaissance designs, exceptional frescoes and stuccowork by Giovanni da Udine, a pupil of Raphael, and other works by 16th-century masters, such as Francesco Salviati and Federico Zuccari. Palazzo Grimani was a cultural landmark in its day for scholars, writers and ambassadors. Monarchs visiting the Serenissima, where Patriarch Giovanni’s collections—ancient Greek and Roman sculptures,
Renaissance medallions, cameos, and other masterpieces—added luster to The Republic of Venice. Grimani’s ‘Chamber of Antiquities’, better known as the Tribune, was the Patriarch’s inner sanctum where he received his most illustrious guests. He envisioned it as the showcase for his extraordinary collection of sculptures, but it is a work of art in its own right, featuring pilasters, niches, and marble frames. Those entering this space find themselves in a stunning and magnificent treasure chest.
