Herbage Grass Seed Mixtures
Introduction Welcome to our 2018 Herbage Grass Seed Mixtures brochure. Bartholomews is proud to be a family owned company with a heritage of over 130 years in agriculture. Our foundations are built on working tirelessly to ensure only the highest quality seeds are offered to our customers. Our herbage seed is mixed using the latest varieties offering superior genetics, quality and yield, whilst ensuring there is a product for every scenario. Our sole aim is to achieve this through extensive research in our on-site seed laboratory and regional trials. We always aim to supply our mixtures as per the descriptions shown. Occasionally, supplies of some varieties run out and it may be necessary to substitute the variety with one of a similar quality and growth habit. You will be advised of any substitutions via the bag label which has the constituents printed on it. We look forward to hearing from you to discuss your requirements.

Herbage Mix No. 1 Early Bite & Cut
Sown in the autumn, this mixture combines the attributes of tetraploid and diploid italian ryegrasses. The diploid maintains the high dry matter, while the tetraploid provides the soluble carbohydrate content. Giving one massive first cut of high quality silage, it can then be ploughed in and followed by maize or linseed. Left in place, it can be grazed through to the autumn or give a second or third cut of silage if no other grass leys are available and it will also provide two/three cuts in the second year. It has also been successfully established after maize and produced the same excellent yields.
One - Two Year Cutting Ley
Herbage 1 - Early Bite & Cut • Good early spring growth • Good mid-season digestibility • High percentage soluble carbohydrate • Close heading dates at 67D to maximise quality and quantity • Good ground cover • Suggested sowing rate 14kg/ac

Herbage Mixture No. 3 Prime Cut & Graze
This mixture suits situations where early silage cuts are not possible, perhaps on wetter, low lying ground or to follow earlier Italian ryegrass leys. The ideal cutting date of 67D is not reached until mid/end of May. This mixture can provide a second cut of high quality silage, if required, before being returned to the summer grazing ground. • Productive cutting ley with good autumn grazing • Excellent conservation and grazing yields • Good disease resistance and persistency • Close heading dates at 67D to enable good quality and quantity of silage and prolonged grazing • Highly digestible • Suggested sowing rate 14kg/ac

Herbage Mix No. 5 Prestige Grazing Ley
Provides a highly digestible ley for intensive stocking situations such as dairy surrounds or beef cattle grazing. Clover is left out of this mixture for a variety of reasons; where high nitrogen fertilising is practiced and if weeds become a problem the ley management require herbicide weed control. • Excellent persistency and winter hardiness • Good early spring growth • Good conservation and grazing yields • Long heading date spread to give prolonged grazing • Suits all soil types • Suggested sowing rate 14kg/ac

Herbage Mix No. 7 Evergreen Pasture
A true permanent pasture mixture giving good spring growth and grazing well into the autumn. Amongst the blend of clovers, a small leaved white clover has been added to maintain a bottom to the sward when intensively grazed by sheep. TIMOTHY helps to maintain the yields during the mid-season period when the ryegrass will be less productive. The clovers are designed to suit long-term grazing leys and comprise of small, through to large leaved varieties which will also flourish in dry summers. • Good persistency and disease resistance conservation, cattle and sheep grazing Suggested sowing rate 14kg/ac • Good grazing yields • Very flexible usage for

Herbage Mix No. 9 Protein Cut
This mix is not suitable for sheep grazing. A mix of red clover and hybrid ryegrass improves quality and persistence without loss of yield. Can be ensiled as a ryegrass sward with up to 3 cuts per season, followed by some grazing. Will do well on most well drained soils and is reasonably winter hardy. • First cut will take 50% of the red clover yield • High protein quality silage with long duration for grazing • Drought tolerant – suits light soils (not suitable for poorly drained areas) • Rotational advantage – excellent entry for wheat crop Suggested sowing rate 12kg per acre

Since the outset, this programme has recognised the significant benefits of breeding perennial and hybrid ryegrasses that combine outstanding dry matter yield with the highest quality (D-value). The resulting range of Aber HSG varieties now lead their respective categories in both the Recommended Grass and Clover List and the Irish Pasture Profit Index, giving British and Irish livestock farmers the best opportunity to maximise production from forage. IBERS’ revolutionary plant breeding has been funded for over 30 years by Germinal, giving the company exclusive worldwide marketing rights to all Aber HSG varieties. This has allowed Germinal to develop a full range of 100% Aber HSG grazing and conservation mixtures, which are utilised by progressive dairy, beef and sheep farmers throughout the UK and as far afield as New Zealand. Grassland Fertiliser
Soil Analysis Up to 10 individual “cores” of soil are taken across 10 acres in a W pattern providing a representative sample of the soil within a field. The sample is then subjected to a wide range of laboratory tests to ascertain levels of nutrients and pH within the soil. Nutrient levels are then converted into indices. It is recommended that soils are tested every 3-5 years. pH A pH of between 6 - 7 is optimum for grass growth, nutrient uptake and inhibiting some weed growth. If the pH falls below 6, soil fertility will start to decline. Liming is a key tool to keep soil pH under control and in the optimum range. Target indices Soil indices allow management of a crop to be tailored to the state of the soil and avoid over application of fertilisers, not only saving money but also protecting the environment from dangers such as nutrient run-off. When at target index the amount of nutrient applied is enough to replace the level that is removed by the growing crop. If the soil is below index more than the crop needs is applied in order to build the soil supply of the nutrient. But when the soil has a large supply of nutrient (more than the crop will use) then often no additional fertiliser will be applied. Grass Nutrition
P and K are essential nutrients for root and tillering development. If the soil is deficient in these nutrients the crop will suffer, potential yield and quality will be reduced. Suggested application is into the seedbed during sowing.
Nutrient Target Index Phosphorus 2 Potassium 2- Magnesium 2
Nitrogen supply should be sufficient but not excessive, toomuch Nwill encourage weed growth. Sulphur is also a key nutrient for grass growth as it improves the efficiency of N use and other nutrients around the plant. Amentity Grass Seed Mixtures
Our amenity grass brochure covers mixes that are suitable for residental lawns, sports pitches or landscaping purposes. We have carefully selected varieties that will thrive in the right conditions and with standard frequent mowing and heavy usage. We also offer a range of amenity and fine turf fertilisers. These differ from the normal agricultural blends by having much finer granules, ensuring
a more even spread onto grass. Their slow release action ensures a constant feed of nutrient into the soil providing steady, healthy growth rather than a quick flush. If you have specific requirements for amentity mixture and would like some further advice please do not hesiate to contact our expert team on 01243 755620 or visit our website to browse our whole range.

Enviromental Mixes
With the rapid increase in environmental awareness and conservation, wild flower/grass mixtures are proving very popular. These mixtures give optimum conditions for establishment, with the rapidly germinating grass cultivars acting as a nurse crop for the more slowly establishing flower seed. It is important that the correct mixture is selected to coincide with the soil type and drainage characteristics of
each site. We have a very comprehensive range of mixtures available for all soil types and situations from simple meadow mixtures, to very specialised mixtures for unusual habitats. The grass and flower seeds are mostly British-grown native wild flower species and are laboratory tested for purity and germination. The proportion of flower to grass seed is usually 20/80. An informative leaflet detailing the mixtures is available upon request.
