EXPLORING THE GREAT OUTDOORS WITH YOUR ORTHOTIC OR PROSTHETIC

The warm weather is finally among us, which means the outdoor activities will soon be in full swing. This is an exciting time for many people, but it can unfortunately pose a few challenges for orthotic and prosthetic users. While we fully encourage exploring the great outdoors, it is important to take some necessary precautions in order to avoid unnecessary injury – so you can enjoy your outdoor activities without pain or discomfort!

5 WAYS TO AVOID OUTDOOR INJURIES

1. Carry extra socks for your prosthetic. By carrying extra socks, you can make sure to add or remove socks as your volume changes. 2. Prepare for the terrain. Are you planning on hiking, climbing, or strolling through a trail this spring or summer? If so, it is important to prepare for the terrain beforehand. Hiking boots with proper traction will help you maneuver those uneven terrains without the risk of slipping or falling. Custom orthotics may also be fitted to your boots. If this is a frequent hobby of yours, special prosthetics can be purchased to make hiking or climbing easier for you. If you are unsure about what may be the best fit for you, consult with your CPO. 3. Make sure your gel liner is fitted. This is important for any physical activity, but especially those that involve the outdoors. A loose liner can slip and cause sweat to pool, making it difficult for you to maneuver your orthotic or prosthetic. Make sure your gel liner is fitting properly, and replace it if it is loose before embarking on your outdoor adventures. 4. Be mindful about getting your orthotic or prosthetic wet. On a hot summer day, there’s nothing quite refreshing as making a trip to your local pool or driving down to a beach to lie by the waves. However, it is important to make sure that your orthotic or

prosthetic can accommodate water activities. Make sure to discuss this with your CPO beforehand, to make sure your orthotic or prosthetic can withstand water. 5. Contact Howard Orthotics and Prosthetics for help. We want to make sure you enjoy your outdoor activities this spring and summer, without any discomfort. If you find yourself in need of assistance, or if you have a question regarding how to prepare your orthotic or prosthetic for an outdoor excursion, don’t hesitate to contact us. We’ll find the best solution for you, so you can make the most of all your warm- weather fun!
