Having a wife and four kids makes for a pretty demanding personal life. On top of that, we home school our kids. On top of that, I am a business owner trying to build something great at In Motion O.C., and I seek to never compromise on daily time with God. Between all these demands for my time, I ultimately have to decide what I want to prioritize. I walk a delicate line every day, and while I am passionate about all that I do, I have to make sure my family has enough of me to feel loved and cherished. At the same time, prioritizing my family has helped me learn how to prioritize customers and employees as well. I only work 40 hours a week. When I was single, I worked 80, and even after I got married, I was still working 60 hours a week. Now I work a 40- hour workweek so I can prioritize my family and faith over everything else. With that in mind, I would say the best thing about being a business owner is the flexible hours. After 15 years in this business, the infrastructure to work remotely has improved immensely. I can work from home, I don’t need permission to go on vacations, and I can take my family to Disneyland in the offseason. The freedom of it all is wonderful, but freedom is only a means to put my family and faith first. Sometimes working from home lets me know that my family is doing well. My emphasis on the importance of family translates into how I run In Motion O.C. We choose to put people above all else. We recently revised our mission statement to better reflect what we’re all about: “To give hope, healing,

confidence, and joy to others.” We live by that. Our profession isn’t about making money; it’s about helping others. We could choose to become a factory and put profits first, but we would rather make a difference in the world. Life-changing therapy and fitness are our passions. None of us are getting rich, but we love what we do because of our desire to change lives.

THE CINDERELLA EVERYONE LOVED TO HATE THE 1990 UNLV RUNNIN’ REBELS

The early ‘90s was a contentious time in college basketball, full of pure amateur competition. The days of the “one and done” player were far ahead, which meant that all the top-level talent was bred in the hotbed of the NCAA. Players like Charles Barkley, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, and David Robinson had to prove their NBA mettle in the grueling basketball tournament we all know as March Madness. It has always showcased the best of the best, but America has always loved an underdog. Last year, audiences adored Loyola Chicago as they made their way to the Final Four. Cinderella teams fill our hearts with hope and optimism, but not all of them are loveable. Perhaps no small school is more polarizing than the UNLV squad that was put together by the late, great Jerry Tarkanian. The team was nasty, flashy, and, most importantly, downright impossible to beat. “The Runnin’ Rebels” ran the court like no team before. Reports have the 1991 Tarkanian squad referring to the Arkansas Razorbacks’ “40 minutes of hell” as “40 minutes of vacation” when it beat the then second-ranked team on its home court. The team embodied swagger and wasn’t afraid to create a splash everywhere it went. Most of the noise wasn’t positive, but

when you win the national championship the year prior, a little arrogance is necessary to maintain your “bad guy” image. Formally a small state school known to locals as “Tumbleweed Tech,” UNLV wasn’t even a Division I school until 1970. When Tarkanian took over in ‘73, the school went from an institution most acclaimed for its hospitality program to an NCAA basketball tournament regular. After making their first Final Four appearance in 1977, the team started down a path that would take them to four Elite 8s in five years, and there would be no greater success than the season that came to pass in 1990. Most games are back-and-forth, with drama centering around every possession. That was not the case during the 1990 national championship game. Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski guided his team to the final through steady stellar performances throughout the tournament, and all was well until the legendary program met UNLV’s rowdies. The opening tipoff was about as close as Duke ever got to controlling any part of that game. Anderson Hunt, Stacey Augmon, and Larry Johnson ran the Blue Devils off the court, and the Cinderella team everyone came to hate won 103–73 in the biggest blowout in NCAA tournament history.

Aquatic therapy can be useful for treating a wide range of ailments, but it’s not something every patient gets instantly excited about. Some are uncomfortable about the idea of getting into the water. Others are skeptical that aquatic therapy will work for them. Almost all patients — even those excited about the prospect of diving in — have questions. Here are a few of the most common. WHY IS AQUATIC THERAPY HELPFUL? While aquatic therapy has a number of benefits, the most basic has to do with Archimedes’ principle, which states, “Any object, wholly or partially immersed in a fluid, is buoyed up by a force equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by the object.” A different and simpler way of

putting this would be to say that buoyancy allows you to move more freely in the water. Movements that would be difficult or painful on land can be done more comfortably when you’re submerged. It’s not hard to see how this principle is widely applicable in a therapeutic context. Working alongside your therapist, you’ll gain strength and confidence in the pool before transitioning to performing the same movements on dry ground. Aquatic therapy allows you to develop strength and flexibility safely and without undue strain. WHAT IF I CAN’T SWIM? Don’t fret. You don’t need to be Michael Phelps in order to participate in aquatic therapy. A therapist will be by your side

SEINFELD’S ‘THE KISS HELLO’ A HUMOROUS TAKE ON PHYSICAL THERAPY Although physical therapy has become commonplace over the past 30 years, it’s still rare that you’ll find it referenced in pop culture. Sure, you may encounter some scenes of PT in a sports documentary, but that’s common because it is unfair to other patients seeking appointments for you to cancel on such short notice.]

While George is wrong to feel aggrieved about these matters — not that George ever needs much justification to feel aggrieved — he later gets proof that Wendy isn’t as exacting with her own schedule as she is with her patients. She heads off to a skiing trip with Elaine, cancelling her appointments with less than a day’s notice. “Oh, I’m sorry, I require 24 hours’ notice for a cancellation,” George pointedly tells the receptionist after arriving for his now-cancelled appointment. “Now, as I see it, you owe me $75.” Of course, this irony is played for laughs, but we believe it’s also instructive on what not to do as a practice. In the episode, George begins seeing Elaine’s friend Wendy, a PT, for treatment of his sore arm. Like many “Seinfeld” storylines, this one begins benignly before spiraling into outrageousness. George gets upset when Elaine chastises him for asking Wendy to look at his arm outside of the office, calling Wendy a “delicate genius” who can’t be disturbed outside of work. He then gets enraged in classic George fashion when told he’ll need to pay for an appointment he cancelled with less than 24 hours’ notice. [Therapist’s note: 24-hour cancellation policies are

Ingredients

• 1 6-ounce beet (about the size of an adult fist), scrubbed • 1 15 1/2-ounce can chickpeas, rinsed and drained • 1/3 cup tahini, well-mixed • 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice

• 1/4 cup ricotta cheese • 1 garlic clove, grated • 1 teaspoon kosher salt, or more to taste

• 1/4 teaspoon fresh ground pepper • 1/4 teaspoon ground coriander • Mint leaves, poppy seeds, and olive oil, for garnish

Directions

1. Heat oven to 425 F. 2. Wrap beet tightly in foil. On a foil-lined baking sheet, roast wrapped beet until fork tender, about 60–70 minutes. 3. While beet is roasting, blend chickpeas, tahini, lemon juice, ricotta, garlic, salt, pepper, and coriander until smooth. 4. Once beet is cool enough to handle, use a paper towel to remove beet skin. Trim root end and cut into small pieces. Add to blender or food processor, and blend until entire mixture is smooth. Add additional salt if desired. 5. SLEEP GAPS While many modern sleep experts support the consecutive eight-hour sleep regimen, historically, people had completely different sleep schedules. Medieval society actually had two sleep sessions a night — known as biphasic sleep — with a gap of wakefulness in between to eat, pray, talk, read, or write by candlelight. But by the 1920s, this practice of having two sleep sessions each night entirely receded from the social consciousness. Historians attribute this shift to innovations in artificial lighting and work schedules during the Industrial Revolution that required workers to stay up longer and sleep less. COZY BLANKETS Most people find it difficult to sleep without some kind of covering, like a blanket, over their bodies. While researchers of the past entertained the idea that blankets offer some kind of

primal protection for sleepers, they now believe the coverings help with temperature regulation, as maintaining a comfortable body temperature is necessary for good sleep. However, according to a recent study conducted in Sweden, weighted blankets help with much more than just temperature. Due to the added pressure, weighted blankets provide deep pressure touch (DPT), which increases the body’s amount of serotonin — a chemical that helps decrease blood pressure and rapid heart rate. Because of the effects of increased serotonin, weighted blankets are believed to help with anxiety and insomnia. While sleep patterns may change over time, the human need for sleep will not. As you crawl into your bed tonight, take some time to think about the way your ancestors approached their nightly snooze sessions. It’ll put you to sleep faster than counting sheep.
