THE HARDSHIPS IN THE WORLD And the Joy in Our Hearts

that ravaged Haiti, many people are now suffering from material loss.

My wife, Jolene, recently came back from a visit to Haiti, where she helped out at an orphanage. We have friends who started the orphanage after the earthquake hit down there, and she went to lend a hand where she could. Jolene acted as a house- mother while she was there, doing anything and everything to help out with the kids. The terrible situation the earthquake left Haiti in and the pictures Jolene brought back to me have been on my mind a lot lately. Not long ago, a sermon at our church referenced poverty and its three categories: material, relational, and spiritual. Haiti has gone through no shortage of hardships, many of which the people continue to fight to this day. The recent earthquake that shook its foundation left many lives in chaos, and my heart aches for them. People living there struggle against these levels of poverty on a daily basis, which many of us here in America can’t even begin to understand or relate to. Material poverty is the most visible and understandable. When people lack the basic needs for survival, including housing, food, water, or protection from the elements, they are experience material poverty. Due to the earthquake

Relational poverty is something a lot of Americans are faced with today. We’ve segregated ourselves from each other. Everyone is on their electronics, and many individuals have a hard time connecting to one another emotionally. In Haiti, many people are experiencing this form of poverty because they have lost loved ones due to the earthquake. When you have good relational wealth, you have a supportive sphere of people around you, which includes family, friends, and even coworkers. It’s often said that if someone is materially wealthy but relationally poor, they’re less happy than someone who is relationally wealthy and materially poor. The last level of poverty is spiritual poverty. The difference between the three is that both material wealth and relational wealth affect our happiness, but spiritual wealth reflects our joy. Happiness is an emotion, whereas joy is a state of being. Whether a person is a billionaire in Silicon Valley or living in a village in Haiti, they both have the same access to joy. The message that the angels sang was for all people, no matter their economic status. The Savior has come and is offering joy and peace for all — that is true wealth.

“And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David, a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.’ Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, ‘Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.’”

Plan Your Family’s Christmas Caroling Party

HAVE SONGS PICKED OUT Will your caroling group perform classics like “Silent Night” or something silly like “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer”? Get everyone on the same page, print out sheet music, and practice before the big night. DRESS FOR SUCCESS Some carolers wear matching scarves, while others go out in full Victorian-inspired costumes. Whatever dress code you decide on, dress for what the temperature will be after dark. You don’t want your caroling to get cut short because of frostbite. If you are caroling outdoors, add reflective tape and flashing lights to your clothing so your party can be seen by passing cars. DON’T MAKE EVERYONE SING One of your kids may be ready to rock around the Christmas tree, but what if another would rather get coal in their stocking than sing in public? That’s okay! pressurized air but by flexible polyurethane spokes, which help the tires absorb shock. Not only do these tires use less rubber than air-filled tires, but they are also immune to punctures and don’t require regular air pressure checks. One product that uses these tires is the Michelin X Tweel, which offers airless tires for certain lawn mowers, compact tractors, or UTVs. In passenger cars, these tires don’t provide a smooth drive at high speeds. However, tire makers are busy creating new designs to counter this small bump in development. AIR PRESSURE TIRES Many people find it difficult to maintain proper air pressure within their tires, but with new advances in tire technology, this inconvenience may become a thing of the past. New technologies are showing promise in self-pressurizing tires. On average, tires AIRLESS TIRES These tires are supported not by

When you get back home, enjoy some traditional wassail or hot chocolate. Warm up, enjoy leftover cookies, and spend time with your loved ones. It takes a little planning to pull off a great caroling party, but don’t put too much pressure on yourself. Just try to have a good time. You don’t have to sound like a choir of angels to bring joy to the world. lose around two pounds of air pressure each month, and the lower the air pressure, the less gas mileage you’ll have. Sensors inside the tire will detect when pressure is too low or too high and adjust accordingly. This technology is already in use for military vehicles and heavy machinery. It may be only a short time before it will be implemented in passenger cars. Given these promising advances, we have much to look forward to in the future of tire technology. KEEP THE PARTY GOING! After a night of singing your heart out,

In some families, caroling is an annual event, while others stick to watching the characters sing at the end of “A Charlie Brown Christmas.” If you want to make Christmas caroling part of your holiday traditions, we have some tips to help make your outing the best ever. PLAN EARLY Calendars fill up fast around the holidays, so if you want to include people outside of your household in your caroling party, send out invitations early. You don’t want your caroling gathering to be a bust because all your guests had other plans. From the invention of the first motorized vehicle to today’s modern passenger car, the tire has undergone many changes. Because the tire is one of the key factors to keep your vehicle running properly and safely, it has improved as regulations and consumer demands increase. Here are a few new tire technologies that are helping vehicle performance. CAIS uses sensors located on the inner wall of a tire to monitor how the tire interacts with the road. These devices can detect different road conditions, such as wetness, dryness, slush, ice, or fresh snow. The information is then sent to the driver through a digital screen. The manufacturers of CAIS hope to take this technology a step further by developing the sensors to communicate with other vehicles. This would allow your car to predict the actions of a vehicle in front of you. CONTACT AREA INFORMATION SENSING (CAIS)

UGLY SWEATER PARTIES A Fun Trend You Can Easily Follow!

closet or a drawer, now’s your chance to give it new life. Arm yourself with a hot glue gun, thread, and needle, and patch Santa, Rudolph, or Frosty on it. And let it be known that an ugly sweater isn’t complete without sparkles, beads, and sequins galore.

It’s speculated that the first ugly sweater party took place in Vancouver, Canada, back in 2001. Since then, the trend has become one of the most popular holiday party themes. Come Thanksgiving, you’ll start to see racks in all types of clothing stores lined with hideous sweaters. If you’re ready to jump on the ugly-sweater-party bandwagon this Christmas season, here are a few things to keep in mind. YOUR VERY OWN UGLY SWEATER Ugly sweaters come in all shapes, sizes, and prices. You can head to H&M or a local thrift store to pick one up. However, if you have a sweater

It’s rather simple — slip on your favorite Christmas sweater, gather all your friends and family members, make sure there are plenty of refreshments and games, and you’re guaranteed to have a top-tier party. A few ugly-sweater-themed games that should be on the agenda include an ugly gift exchange, which is similar to the white elephant exchange, except with the gaudiest
