Athens Debate Finally Expanding to Fremont and Saratoga “A refreshing, innovative, and highly-successful approach to debate education”

Athens Debate is quickly making waves as the best place to learn Speech and Debate in the Bay Area. Their approach to debate education is innovative, thoughtful, and refreshingly focused on deep learning. Unlike other programs, Athens places a premium on hir- ing instructors that come from top pedigrees like Berkeley, Yale, Stanford, and other top-tier institutions . Having a suc- cessful debate history isn’t enough for Athens, to teach there you need to be a world class instructor and also someone who can serve as a role model for students to encourage them to unlock their full potential. Many of Sachin’s (Founder of Athens) students have gone on to graduate from Yale, Harvard, Stanford, Berkeley, MIT and are now doing great things. One of his former students writes, “I graduated from Yale Law School and summa cum laude with a B.A. in philos- ophy from UCLA. Were it not for Sachin Jain's debate coach- ing, neither of these things would have happened”. What we liked most about Sachin is that he used his experi- ence in Speech and Debate to find success in the real world. He has worked in political and policy capacities at the United States Senate, White House, San Jose City Council, the Governor of California, President of the UC System, and the Mayor of San Jose. There’s no better way to make debate come alive for students than by showing how what their debating about actually connects to the real world. Athen’s students have done phenomenally well. Just this past month, Athens took 26 students who have never compet- ed in a debate tournament to their first competition. Most of the other students at the tournament had 1 to 3 years of com-

spelling instead of thought and organization; prohib- it students from using effective writers’ tools such as dictionaries and thesauruses; test students by allow- ing them to write only one draft under severe time pressure; and use teachers who grew up hating writ- ing and are unhappy with the prospect of staying up late to read and grade 30 papers on the same boring topic. If, however, you want your child to write well, you must first ask yourself, what does it mean to be a good writer? Even for an audience of parents dedi- cated to nurturing outstanding students, the goal can have a variety of meanings. For some, it means that their children get good grades on writing assignments at school and attend prestigious colleges. Others, with a more long-term view, see good writing as the manifestation of clear thinking, which will help their students pursue higher education into professions such as medicine, law, engineering, academia, and so forth. Still others, see good writing as a channel for

If you want your child to learn to hate writing and, consequently, to write only when necessary, there are effective resources available to you—tradi- tional writing programs in most public schools. That teacher guides students to understand that good writing requires the time to re-read, edit, and re-write their work, as contrasted with the “on-demand writing” that is taught in most schools.

It would be best if, in addition to the other meanings, being a good writer meant enjoying the art and craft of writing, because that is essential to future success. Rarely, do parents conceive of their students as future authors of important, influential works— which is surprising, because some will be. It is far easier to imagine one’s child as a future football play- er in the National Football League, a star ballerina in the American Ballet Theatre, or a solo pianist at Carnegie Hall, though a child has a much higher probability of being a successful novelist, how-to author, journalist, or consultant as a result of out- standing writing skills. Writing is a skill-based activity that requires both specific skills and the motivation to improve them. In that sense, it is analogous to learning to play soccer, where everyone—from five-year-olds starting to play the game to World Cup-class players—must continue to practice dribbling, passing, and shooting. It is important for beginners to experience the pleasure of playing soccer games so that they enjoy what they are doing and have a desire to improve. Good players never stop wanting to be better. Rather than focus on the errors in student writing, a successful writing teacher helps students take pride

and literature. When he was a junior in college in China, he translated from English into Chinese four major English classic novels. The translated works were 1) To Kill a Mockingbird (Harper Lee), The Egoist (George Meredith), The Secret Sharer (Joseph Conrad), and The Efficiency Expert (Edgar Rice Burroughs). He also translated from English to Chinese at least fifty famous short stories by such well-known English U.S. authors, such as James Joyce, Joseph Conrad, Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner, John Irwin, Susan Glaspell, etc. During his graduate school years in China, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and Columbia University, he continued to produce over a dozen literary theoretical articles and critiques of classic poetry and novels. RapeRoko - Join the fight or risk being reduced to a statistic By Vijaya Nadar

judiciary or the various government departments dealing with the matter. The crimes against women and children, between 2012 and 2014 alone stood at 31,446 with only 150 convictions. DCW was a toothless Tiger, where women politicians were shunted, by the ruling party of the day. The last commissioner of DCW, before Swati, Barkha Singh, who held the position for nine years, solved only one case in those nine years, never disturbing the police for statistics. "When I was appointed, I read the act, and was amazed at the powers at my disposal, I could summon the police commissioner and threaten to arrest him, who was delaying giving me rape fig- ures, for fear of it causing public outrage. Since then, in one year alone, we have overseen 11,696 cases, attended to 316 lakh distress calls on the 181 helpline, conducted 7500 grass roots visit, attended 5500 court cases, counselled 1869 sexual assault victims and have made 55 recommenda- tions for women’s safety to the government. We are the only women's commission office in the entire country who operate on Saturdays, and if required on Sundays too. "We are very much part of the system, but believe in shaking it up, stepping on a lot of male egoes in the process. And if I am ever sent to jail for the effort, be sure that I will have a report ready on prison reforms, besides ensuring the welfare of the 600 odd women prisoners in Tihar jail", says Ms Maliwal

It is more than five years since the brutal Nirbhaya/Jyoti rape incident in a public trans- port in Delhi, caused extreme outrage amongst Indians back home and abroad, but her helpless parents still continue to await justice. In April this year, yet another rape, this time of a innocent eight year old girl Asifa, from Kathua, Jammu seized international attention. The rape case helped the chief of the Delhi Commission of Women (DCW) Swati Maliwal, press for an ordinance, an amendment to the Criminal Law, awarding death sentence to rapists of children under the age of 12. Ms Maliwal had gone on an indefinite hunger strike on April 13, which ended 10 days later, when this all important ordinance was passed. This indefinite hunger strike had followed just a month after her RapeRoko movement, which started on January 31 ended on March 8, International Women’s Day, following the rape of a eight month old infant in Delhi. During this movement, she went on a quiet satyagraha, where she has decided not to return home fromwork, catching some sleep in the office itself during work. She was not aware of what kind of impact this would have, but "I wanted to do this, to stay focused on the task at hand, to demand three important things - to ensure that the perpetrators of these heinous crimes on chil- dren, are given the death sentence, that a fast track court is appointed to deal with these cases and that the cases are disposed of within six months of the crime". The situation in Delhi, which has over the years become the rape capital of the world, has deteriorated so much, because the entire machin- ery in place to protect the women and children, is in a state of near collapse, whether it is the police,

Oakland Zoo Campers are also CONSERVATIONISTS!

Animal Close-Ups are another favorite camper activity. Several times during the week, a small, live animal comes to visit each class. These ani- mals aren’t part of the regular zoo, and the only way you get to meet them is by participating in one of our Education programs. Campers get to see these animal ambassadors up close, learn about them, and find out what they feel like. OUR CAMPERS ARE ALSO CONSERVATIONISTS! Each summer, we select a different animal to feature on our camp T-shirts and we select a part- ner organization that is working to protect that animal in the wild. Two dollars of each camper registration is donated to the project, campers learn about the project through a special All Camp Assembly, and on Friday, every camper earns a reward for taking action to save wildlife. Many of our ZooCamp teachers are college students or recent graduates, often with degrees in Biology, Animal Science, Environmental Studies, or another animal-related field. Many of our camp teachers return to work with us for 4-5 years - good evidence of their dedication to ZooCamp. Teen Assistants (TAs) are high school volunteers who help guide and manage camp groups. TAs are additional help for each teacher and are not counted in our 1 to 15 ratio. Many TAs are past ZooCampers and are very enthusiastic to create a fun environment for new participants. Camps last one week and run 9 am to 4 pm. Before and After Care are available for an addi- tional cost. Prices vary for different programs, visit our website for more information. Oakland Zoo invites kids from all around the Bay Area to come hang out with us for an exciting week of outdoor nature discovery, animal adven- tures, and fun! Summer camp activities include interactive stories, puppet play, games, craft pro- jects, science activities, and of course, animals! Oakland Zoo takes great pride in creating age- appropriate programs for campers from Pre-K to High School. We limit classes to a maximum of 15 campers for each camp teacher. This gives our staff the opportunity to know your campers and tailor our activities to them. ZooCamp is orga- nized such that each camper can attend two sepa- rate weeks without repeating activities. In addi- tion our 1st – 5th grade campers are invited to partake in our mixed age camp, Nature Play. So what happens at ZooCamp? A typical day starts with All Camp Assembly. Each class makes its way to our Wildlife Theater to say good morning, warm up with a song, and participate in a silly skit or game. Then, classes split up for a morning full of activities – usually a zoo tour or visiting the creek restoration site to look for wildlife. We all join up again for lunch and recess, which is filled with free play options like jump rope and kickball. After lunch, camp groups split up again for afternoon activities – craft projects, examining animal artifacts, story time, and running games – all of which relate back to their program’s theme. For example, our first graders might spend a day learning all about birds by visiting the aviary exhibits, getting to touch and examine different types of feathers, playing a running game in which they race to build a nest, and then making their own fancy headdresses and creating a dance to attract a mate.

SAVENATURE.ORG AND INSECT DISCOVERY LAB BRING ENVIRONMENTAL LITERACY TO CHILDREN THROUGH FUN AND PARTICIPATION THIS SUMMER!

Insect Discovery Lab, an award win- ning, hands-on educational outreach program using insects to inspire kids to save wildlife in wild places. The goal of this portable lab is to nurture environmental literacy, creating a pop- ulation of young people whose approach to their environment reflects responsibility, stewardship and com- mitment. Today, the Insect Discovery Lab presents more than 800 programs a year, reaching more than 38,000 chil- dren annually. Bringing the lab into the classroom has allowed Norm to have direct influence in children's lives. In 2005 and 2006 he nurtured and nomi- nated a young medically challenged 10-year-old boy for the Young International Eco-Hero Award and the Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes. The boy won both awards, and in turn is working to inspire other children around the world.

Norman director SaveNature.org is the very embodi- ment of the spirit of preserving the nat- ural world. Over his 41-year career, he has shared his love of nature with nearly half a million young students, helping to ignite their own desires to become active stewards of the earth. Building on their enthusiasm, he has created multiple opportunities for them to put their activism to work. He has trained teachers and educational specialists to keep spreading the word, has taken his message to the airwaves and on the road to major news media, conservation organizations, and edu- cational institutions. Norm's signature impact is the ripple effect. The Insect Discovery Lab is the most hands-on experience any birthday child (or family) can imagine - dark- ling beetles, eastern lubber grasshop- pers, giant African millipedes, Australian walking sticks and much more! We ask to limit the group to around 20 kids (we know there could be up to 20 adults present as well) so we present to both the children and the adults. NG: There is nothing like the Insect Discovery Lab - watching a young child have the opportunity to hold a Madagascar hissing cockroach or a giant African millipede changes their life forever. Also, we are the only group that links this "nature" experi- ence with actually saving nature in rainforest and coral reefs through SaveNature.Org's Adopt-An Acre and Adopt-A-Reef program. Through encounters with nature in the city and exposure to sci- ence as a hands-on process, students will be able to grow as leaders in their school and the community. NG: We present about anatomy, warning coloration, camouflage, defense strategy, survival, biodiversity of insects, communication, general entomological knowledge, species identification, and Inspiration! IPM: What is the daily schedule for a child for summer programs if any? NG: We are available 7 days a week. IPM: How do you deal with chal- lenging kids? What is your disciplin- ing method? NG: We have educators with more than 20 years of experience in presen- tation and the classroom. We work with great respect and intention with children and adults. NG: We prefer a background in biology, drama and education. Every teacher/Insect Discovery Lab educa- tional specialist goes through rigorous training, shadowing, and evaluation before they present to the public. IPM: How is the ethnic mix in your camps/summer specials? Do you welcome all? NG: Absolutely! IPM: What kind of background do you expect from your teachers?
