TINY’S MIGHTY TREK BEATS FUNDRAISING TARGET

Plumbmaster Bangor Manager, John Weatherill, put his best foot forward to complete the final leg of his an epic 864-mile trek to raise over £2,160 for the Inspire Wellbeing charity. The Portavogie man, known to his family and friends as Tiny, completed the full distance of travelling from Lands End to John O’Groats in 90 days. Most of the challenge was completed virtually, at home on his treadmill, but the ‘Last Leg,’ 62 miles, from Haldane Fisher, Newry to Haldane Fisher, Enniskillen was completed on foot in 24 hours. Speaking to Ireland’s Heating & Plumbing Magazine before setting off on the fundraiser, Tiny said he felt inspired by his own father who enjoyed walking and completed the Lands End to John O’Groats trek. Having lost over 10 stone in weight through walking, Tiny decided to pay homage to the weight-loss by carrying extra weight during the finishing leg. Inspire Wellbeing (Addiction NI) is Plumbmaster’s Charity of the Year for 2022. Tiny had hoped to raise £2,000 with his fundraiser, but donations from work colleagues and Plumbmaster customers have surpassed that amount. OFTEC IRELAND NEWS

Update: DAVID BLEVINGS, OFTEC IRELAND MANAGER, SAYS REPLACING HEATING OIL WITH RENEWABLE LIQUID FUELS, LIKE HVO, CAN OFFER AN IMMEDIATE 88% CARBON REDUCTION FOR OIL HEATED HOMES NOW AND RIGHT UP TO 2050....

REPORT PROVIDES REASSURANCE THAT USING HVO TO DE-CARBONISE OFF-GRID HOMES WILL NOT BE HINDERED BY FEEDSTOCK AVAILABILITY…

No supply barriers to HVO adoption – study finds

A s we continue to lobby both governments for the inclusion of biofuels in future energy strategies, one of the questions often asked is, “Is there enough of this renewable fuel to de-carbonise off-grid homes?” Our colleagues in the UK and Ireland, Fuel Distributors Association (UKIFDA), has published the findings from its study, which demonstrates there is more than enough feedstock, while they estimate conservatively that around 50% of homes could be converted to use biofuels by 2030. According to the study, “The UK domestic heating oil market can easily be accommodated within the overall requirement for renewable liquid fuels. There is more than enough projected feedstock availability to meet renewable liquid fuel consumption requirements in Europe and North America. “The UK heating oil replacement requirement would be between 0.4% and 0.5% of renewable liquid fuel production in Europe and North America. Europe has potential feedstock availability to produce between 64 and 105 million tonnes of oil equivalent (mTOE) of renewable liquid fuels per annum by 2030. European biofuels consumption is expected to be between 19 and 26 mTOE per annum by 2030, meaning projected renewable liquid fuels yield would exceed demand by between 243- 560%.”

The report acknowledges that some of the technologies covered in the study require further development however, the rapid growth in the Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) market provides grounds for optimism. HVO – which offers an immediate c.88% reduction in carbon emissions – is the biofuel being promoted by a number of bodies including OFTEC as the replacement for kerosene. The report states that HVO production from 2013 to 2020 increased from 2.2m metric tonnes to 6.2m and forecasts European production of HVO to increase to 11.30m tonnes by 2025 and in the USA to 12.6m tonnes. The liquid fuel sector has always stated that the overarching objective of any energy policy should be to ensure that the right system is put into the right home. The key focus to 2030 should be ensuring that certain low- regret pathways remain open, while focusing on removing the most carbon intensive sources of heating. We believe we can do that without serious cost implications for liquid fuel users by replacing heating oil with renewable liquid fuels, such as HVO. This report provides the reassurance needed by Governments that the approach to use HVO to de-carbonise offgrid homes will not be encumbered by feedstock availability. The next step should be to discuss pricing

mechanisms of renewable liquid fuels with NI and ROI governments to bring their use in line with transport and aviation. The infrastructure offering ‘tickets’ for road transport is already in place and needs to incorporate renewable fuels used for home heating.

TRAINING OFTEC already offers courses to ensure

technicians are fully trained in adapting boilers to use renewable liquid fuels as well as heat pump technology for new and thermally efficient homes.

The SOLOLIFT2 range consists of five different products, all of which are designed for easy accessibility and flexibility. you call them, this type of technology helps homeowners create their dream home, and give installers more options and a much easier way to make it happen. With a vast increase in people now working from home on a more permanent basis, many homeowners are looking at how they can extend and repurpose various rooms or areas in their house to get the most out of their space. Sometimes customers want to install a kitchen, bathroom, toilet or any other type of sanitary appliance in a location that appears impossible because there isn’t a direct plumbing feed to a waste outlet. The Grundfos SOLOLIFT2 range of lifting stations makes it possible to install appliances in difficult locations regardless of the appliance’s gravity point or the overall plumbing.

DISTRIBUTOR – SONAS BATHROOMS

DRIVEN BY TECHNOLOGY AND GREAT DESIGN, SONAS OFFERS A VARIETY OF MIRRORS IN DIFFERENT STYLES AND DIMENSIONS AND PRICE POINTS… More than meets the eye: SONAS Sansa mirror range

W hen it comes to mirrors, there are numerous shapes, styles and features to select from in the SONAS range. SMART features, digital clock displays and demister functions are just some of the options available to your customer base. SONAS offers tips to share with clients when selecting the perfect mirror for their bathroom. PERFECT FIT Typically, people choose a mirror that lines up as the same width and the vanity unit itself. Alternatively, choose a mirror about 75%-80% of the width of the vanity unit. This may be less if leaving room for wall lights on either side of the mirror. In terms of the height, it is important to allow plenty of scope as the bathroom may be used by children and tall adults. For this reason, it’s a good idea to allow for

plenty of scope to suit most people. A good guide is to position mirrors from 1.2m to 2m from the floor. For larger bathrooms – especially with double basins – you may opt for double mirrors, or alternatively one large single mirror to span the width of both basins. Round mirrors are becoming more popular. Whether back-lit or hung from a strap of chain, a round mirror can soften the feel of a bathroom. LIGHT ME UP! The SONAS Sansa range is illuminated with A-rated energy efficient LED lights - providing high- quality and eco-friendly lighting, with 50,000 hours of lighting. It’s important to think about different aspects of lighting in bathrooms. Task lighting is where direct intense illumination is required for a task. In a bathroom this could be applying makeup or

shaving. For this reason, choice of lights and mirror need to work in unison. SONAS illuminated bathroom mirrors come with an IP44 rating, means that it protects against water ingress. LED lights are more energy efficient and come with an A-energy rating. In illuminated mirrors such as the Sansa range, the touch switch turns on the integrated lights. MUSIC MIRROR The show stopping Sansa Sound Bluetooth Mirror enables users to hear their favourite tunes through its integrated blue tooth speakers. Customers can play music by connecting to their phone or by USB port. CABINET MIRRORS Storage is always a challenge in bathroom design. 60% of people in the SONAS Big Bathroom Survey (2022) say they don’t have enough space to stash their bathroom essentials. Traditionally medicine cabinets were purely functional solutions, but did nothing for the aesthetics of bathrooms. Modern cabinet mirrors from SONAS offer a wide choice of illuminated or recessed mirror cabinets, which can be coordinated with a choice of vanity. Combining storage, lighting and a mirror in a Sansa cabinet mirror is a perfect solution for a small bathroom space.

TRACEY HENDRON, BASSETTS SHOWROOM CONSULTANT DESCRIBES THE PROCESS BEHIND DESIGNING STYLISH STORAGE SOLUTIONS FOR A TRIO OF BATHROOMS… Case study showcases stylish storage solutions from Bassetts

W hen it comes to bathroom design, there is a growing trend amongst domestic customers for a more practical space offering plenty of storage with minimal maintenance. When faced with such a brief, Bassetts Bathrooms showroom is the ideal destination to find stylish solutions. This is exactly what a Co. Armagh customer was looking for when she approached Bassetts Bathrooms to design her family bathroom, master ensuite and shower room. Her brief was to create beautiful rooms within her new-build home, including furniture

that was both easy to maintain and of excellent quality. Indeed, it was important that the design would work for all the family, both now and in the future, The customer wanted timeless products that were going to stand the test of time, with the view that things wouldn’t have to be updated in a number of years. She also wanted maximum storage. The best way of utilising space is in the form of a vanity unit under the basin. It is tidier and much more hygienic. This was the brief for all three bathrooms. In the main bathroom – used primarily by the customer’s children – the design

combines traditional elements with a distinctly modern look to create a stylish and practical space. As per the brief, the vanity unit is a key feature in the room. It sits adjacent to a wall with two tall windows, so is in the direct path of natural light, as well as having two wall-mounted sidelights on either side. Sourced from Burbidge, The Bathroom Furniture Company, the stunning Tetbury curved vanity unit includes an integral basin, designed to sit seamlessly within the solid worktop. The effect is both aesthetically pleasing, giving those clean modern lines and smooth presentation, while also serving a practical function, as

a lack of visible joints means no spaces for dust and dirt to gather. The unit is further made a feature of with a wall-mounted sconce on either side of the mirror which hangs above it. The sconce hardware matches that of the tap and towel rail and each one is fitted with a tall, upward-facing opulent glass pendant light. SMOOTH LINES Another core feature of the room is the seamless floor-standing Carissa bath, which sits in between the two vertical windows. With a smooth, curved design the bath embodies those clean lines and a minimalist style, presenting a modern twist on the traditional free-standing tub. People don’t have as much time to clean these days, so we want clean edges that don’t gather dust. Modern design is all about keeping bathrooms clean. The bath has a practical hose attachment, another convenient feature in what is the children’s bathroom, while the room also includes a walk-in shower

with glass surround. This is fitted with a stylish coloured slate shower tray from Doccia, which creates more of a wet room look, the flat, smooth texture giving the appearance of real stone, while also preventing against leaks. The slate shower trays come in a variety of standard colours. Once the customer picked her floor tiles we colour-matched the shower tray. She wanted a seamless look which complemented the floor tiles and tray so we used ‘Showerwall’, decorative MDF laminate panels which are fitted inside the shower and run from floor to ceiling. The shower in the master ensuite extends wall-to-wall and is fitted with a sliding, level-access door without any bottom. Once more, the shower makes use of a Showerwall rather than tiles, while another comfort-height toilet sits beneath the window. A small heated towel rail runs alongside this. Again, the vanity – a Utopia Roseberry wall-mounted unit in a dove-grey shade – takes centre-stage in the room. With a

20mm white worktop, a countertop bowl and Utopia’s tall Regent traditional tap, the Roseberry is a modern interpretation of the traditional luxury painted timber furniture with cup handles. The sidelights fitted at the ensuite vanity unit are downward-facing this time and come from the Burlington ornate lighting range. The shower room contains more fitted furniture – the vanity unit, WC and a small cupboard are all contained within one piece of furniture, which runs seamlessly along one wall of the room. The shower enclosure has been designed to create a large walk-in area and is fitted with a Mira Sport Air boost Electric Shower. The air boost feature subsequently circulates air to create a more powerful electric shower experience. This is a useful second shower for the family home, as the main bathroom and master ensuite were installed with the Grohe Rainshower systems and use hot water from the pressurised system.
