Although the Dock Party/Staycation for December was delayed until 2021 due to precautions, the Boat Parade was a great success. Pelican was lit from stem to stern carrying the MIYC burgee with the parade providing a bit of normalcy during the Covid chaos. Jon & Angela Holt were prominently displayed on the bow as Santa and Mrs. Claus bringing joy and smiles to kiddos young and old with Santa's Ho Ho Ho greeting the gatherings along the parade route. This year there was an increase in the number of boats in the spectator fleet and as usual the MIYC was bursting at the seams with Members and guests enjoying the beautiful evening and the colorful yachts. Marco Island Yacht Club Members Donate to Noon Rotaryùs öFlags for Heroesõ Program Marco Island Yacht Club presented a check for more than $4,500 to Linda Sandlin, President of the Noon Rotary Club of Marco Island in support of their "Flags for Heroes” Program. The Rotary plans to display hundreds of flags, each dedicated to a Hero, from February 14-19, 2021 in Veteran’s Park. Proceeds form the event will be used by the Rotary Club to help meet critical needs of those less fortunate in the community. The Yacht Club has 47 Members (some deceased) who are Veterans, having served our country in either the Army, Navy, Air Force or Marines. The money raised will ensure that each of these Members is honored with a flag, and will provide enough to sponsor more than 20 additional flags for other veterans remembered by Members. The Yacht Club supports many other community endeavors as well. This month they donated $5,000 to the “Toys for Tots” Program to bring holiday cheer to local children in need (below), and every month they collect food donations to bring to the local Our Daily Bread Food Pantry. In addition, they provide many scholarships to local children for their Summer Youth Sailing Program.

Toys for Tots The Salvation Army/Marines' Toys for Tots Program would like to thank you for all your hard work and donations this chal lenging year. Because of you Christmas was saved for many local families this holiday season. With your help we were able to make sure all 5,000 children have a gift under the tree. When they say “it takes a village,” it really does, and we have one in Collier County. May you, your family and elves’ helpers all have a Happy New Year.

Happy New Year to all! As we usher in 2021, I’m certain we share hopes and prayers for a swift end to the pandemic that has so significantly altered our normal ways of life and social interactions. In the meantime, we continue to focus on creative ways to carry out Club traditions and fun activities in the safest ways possible. With this in mind, I would like to call your attention to the considerable number of Bridge and boating activities we have posted on January’s Cruise Schedule and Club calendar. First, we will kick it all off with the Boaters’ Night of all Boaters’ Nights, January 20 th , and while the program remains a secret, you can be assured it will be an evening to remember. Then, you’re invited to join me and our newest Past Commodore, Ray Rosenberg, for one of the Club’s main signature events, the Annual Change of Watch and Commodore’s Ball, Saturday, January 23 rd . We have a terrific program planned, with a delicious menu and great entertainment. These are both affairs you won’t want to miss! We also have several fun boating activities planned, including a Day Cruise to Paradise Found on January 11 th (Social Members invited), an Extended Cruise to Pink Shell, January 13 th - 15 th , and a Sunset Cruise on January 27 th .

And finally, on February 6 th we will hold the Annual Blessing of the Fleet, a centuries old religiously based tradition adopted by yacht clubs the world over, calling upon God’s grace for safety at sea. MIYC and other boating clubs join together annually to conduct this festive and colorful ceremony, and all Captains and Members are encouraged to participate. So, whether you’re a Captain and/or crew with a desire to join the fleet, or a Member who would like to view the ceremony from shore, do sign up for this day of festivities. Please watch for details and reservation information for all of the above Bridge events, which you will find in this Anchorlines edition, as well as upcoming targeted eBlasts.

The Holiday Dinner for Members on December 5 was an epicurean treat with Beef Wellington on the menu. Santa (Jon Holt) arrived and teased the Members about being good during the past year. He also said that it was hard for him to steer his sleigh since Rudolph could hardly see with his mask on. The highlight of the evening was Alan and Linda Sandlin performing holiday songs and leading the Members in tunes of the season. Vicki Bretthauer and Dwyn von Bereghy announced the total collected for Toys for Tots. Members Holiday Dinner

desirable and safe place to be during the coronavirus era. And we were able

I hope all of you had an enjoyable Christmas and New Year celebration. Whether you were home, with family, or enjoying one of the Club special events...it is good to see 2020 go...and we look forward to 2021 with hope and high expectations! The coronavirus pandemic made this past year challenging for all of us. We learned to make sure we always have a mask with us. We learned to use a lot more sanitizer. We learned to spend time watching things like positivity ratios and hospital bed availability! And, we have so far been very fortunate to not have too many of our members contract the virus. For the Marco Island Yacht Club, we did manage to complete the year with a number of positive accomplishments. Despite being closed for six weeks of state mandated shutdown in April and May, we completed the fiscal year with a positive operating result. This outcome was the result of a lot of hard work by Staff and the ongoing support of our Membership. We were able to put in place financing for the new marina, thanks to Member support. The successful financing allowed us to start the project with the contractor predicting an early completion. We have also signed up a number of new Wet Slip Members in advance of the project completion! Thanks to the Mariners Fund, we were able to complete a number of projects this past year. We refurbished the Harbour Room and added additional speakers for the upper lanai. Member Events continued to roll out great events that made the Club a

As we look forward to 2021, I am very positive about the future of our Club! Our Membership levels have held up well through the pandemic, and we are cont inuing to get new Membership inquiries. We have a full cruise schedule for the coming year. The Club Calendar has some great activities scheduled. The Riverside Marina should be complete by the end of 2021 which will help the Club. And the coronavirus vaccine shipments that began in December should have a positive impact on our lives by Spring! Please continue to observe all appropriate safety precautions related to t he v i rus as our Member sh i p and community come back for the Spring Season. Please take time to give thanks for all that we have and the good fortune we enjoy. And please continue to support our Club. On Tuesday, December 1 st , the annual “Deck the Halls” was held at the Club. Twenty Volunteers worked inside and outside the Yacht Club to transform it into a Holiday Wonderland. Most of the Volunteers were familiar helpers, but several were new Members. This is always a great way for new Members to meet other Members and get involved with Club Projects. The Vaccines are Here!

By Peggy Frazier

The distribution will be a challenge but down the road we can look forward to a scientific miracle that has been a passion of amazing scientists that have been working on this incredible option for years. We have begun vaccination of health care workers and nursing homes and will keep you updated on vaccine availability. Florida has decided that people age 65 and over are the next priority group and while there is still some rule confusion apparently snowbirds qualify. Consider the following options with the guidance of your health practitioner to support your respiratory health and the health of your immune system: 1. Zinc Lozenges : Completely dissolve in mouth one lozenge containing 18.75 mg of zinc acetate during waking hours. Do not exceed 4 lozenges daily, and do not use for more than three consecutive days.

The vaccines are here! But until you get yours a reminder about Vitamin D helping to lower risk and aid recovery from severe Covid-19. A new study found that 80% of people hospitalized with Covid-19 had inadequate D levels. They also had higher inflammatory markers linked to poor Covid outcomes. Other studies have found that those with adequate D levels have a lower risk of dying from the disease and a significantly reduced risk for complication. If you have had your levels tested and they are around 50 ng/mL just keep supplementing: if they are not sufficient let’s talk about how to ramp up your numbers. While the evidence is mostly anecdotal, the extra D also helps some people who respond to the vaccine with elevated side effects. While you wait for your vaccine keep up your precautions. We are almost there! The strong early results for the mRNA vaccines have implications that go far beyond the current pandemic: They suggest the time has come for a gene-based technology that could provide new treatments for cancer, heart disease and other infectious diseases and provides the basis for the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines. The mRNA vaccine is not a live virus but it teaches the immune system what the virus looks like and messages it to be ready to attack. With huge numbers of people involved in the testing, the vaccine has been proven relatively safe and amazingly effective. Normally the trials for a vaccine run sequentially but these were done concurrently to speed up the process. Meanwhile the vaccine started production - a significant risk but what we needed to do. When the critical 3rd phase results were in they showed the vaccine was over 90% effective. We are still going to have to mask and take precautions until all of the unknowns are resolved. This is not going to be like a light switch that is on or off but as we get more people vaccinated this will be like a dimmer switch. Once we reach 75% we have a good shot on stopping the pandemic and returning to all of our MIYC extended cruises and events

Garlic : Take 9,000 ‒ 18,000 mg of high-allicin garlic each day until symptoms subside. Take with food to minimize stomach irritation. Vitamin D : If you do not already maintain a blood level of 25-hydroxyvitamin D over 50 ng/mL, then take 50,000 IU of vitamin D the first day and continue for three more days and slowly reduce the dose to around 5,000 IU of vitamin D each day. If you already take around 5,000 IU of vitamin D every day, then you probably do not need to increase your intake. Cimetidine : Take 800 ‒ 1,200 mg a day in divided doses. Cimetidine is a heartburn drug that has potent immune support properties. (It is sold in pharmacies over-the-counter.) Melatonin : Take 2 ‒ 10 mg sublingually at bedtime or as needed.

Additionally there are other immune boosters that can help. Feel free to reach out with questions! Let’s all hope for a better year ahead!

MIYC Boatersù Night Wednesday, January 20 th Cocktails 6pm Dinner 7pm

Henry Stanley Rear Commodore

Gentle Members, To kick off the New Year, we’re planning the Granddaddy of All Boaters’ Nights: Centered around the annual Boating and Bridge Awards, we will assemble an all-star cast of your fellow Members who will poke a little gentle fun at the goings - on of this strange year, and, with hope, bring us a little humor to build on for 2021. For every weird thing we had to do, like keeping 6 feet away from Bob Winterhalter at all times, there was something great that happened, like the beginning of the Marina Project. For every painful memory, like the imposition of the mask-wearing rule, there was something much better to remember, like the way Chef Bob improved the menu and the quality of food. Now, if only we could eat Chef’s Jambalaya through those masks … Seriously, the January Boaters’ Night will be a humorous festival like nothing you’ve ever seen before at a Boaters’ Night. Some aspects of the evening’s program must necessarily be kept a surprise, but, I promise you, it will be a very pleasant surprise. Missing this event would be like missing Halley’s Comet – it only comes around once in a lifetime. (Sorry if that reference went over anyone’s head). The Bridge and your fellow Members want to entertain you in the worst way, and believe me, that is exactly what you’re going to get! DON’T MISS THE BOAT – Boaters’ Night, that is… A gourmet meal will be served by Chef Bob, as soon as he can decipher his Grandma’s recipe for Pot Roast… Get your reservations in early…Don’t miss it! 239-394-0199 Cheers, Henry Stanley Rear Commodore

MIYC Member Events By Angela Holt

And, so we say goodbye to 2020. It certainly proved to be a challenging year in so many ways. But, Member Events forged through and scheduled games and dances and holiday events with the same enthusiasm as any other year. We will long remember the reveal of our newly painted Harbour Room in October, and the 20th Anniversary Retrospective in November. Let's not forget the Country Jam Session with Tom, Owen and Chef who must do a repeat performance in '21. Coming up in January, we will be entertained by our Karaoke guru on the 16th, and then don our finest garb for the Commodore's Ball on January 23. Make sure you sign up for monthly Twilight Golf and Couples Bridge. Then there are the weekly Canasta and Mah Jong and Bridge games. The Bridge hosts monthly Day Cruises and Sunset Cruises as well as the Fishing Club and the ever popular Boater's Night. I guess you can say there is something for everyone.

We welcome your sugges t i ons and l ook forward to your joining in our special events. Or, come to a Member Events meeting and be part of the planning. Email me at [email protected] The 2021 calendar is filled to the brim with fun events and all we need is you. Angela Holt Chair, Member Events Committee Marco Island Yacht Club 908-303-2139

Communications Committee News It’s been an interesting couple of months for the Communications Committee! In November I became Chairperson, Carol Comeaux is handling all MIYC Press Releases and continues to be a helpful resource on the website, and Kevin O’Neill manages all the advertising you see in Anchorlines. And then, in December, the Marrs announced they are planning on living up North. Anchorlines : Linda Marr has done a wonderful job of producing the Anchorlines for what seems like forever. Both she and Jim will be greatly missed. I am pleased to announce that Ellie Everitt has

Michelle Hennessy Communications

volunteered to take over production of Anchorlines. She and Linda will be working together over the next couple of months to ensure that the monthly newsletter continues to provide us all with great photos and content! Linda, we wish you and Jim all the best! Many of you may not be aware that Linda has also been responsible for many of the great photos you see in Anchorlines. So, we are looking for a few Members who would like to volunteer on a Photography Team to take photos at events they attend. The hope is to have a schedule so that we’re not relying on one person for all our photos. We will also use many of these photos in our publicity and Social Media. If you would like to be part of the “Team,” please let me know. Photographers Wanted! Online Calendar: The secret is out. Did you know there’s a calendar under “Member Central” on our website. www.marcoislandyachtclub.net All our events are listed there. We are now also adding details for each event on that calendar! Want to know what time the Wine & Dine event is? Want to know when Bridge is and who to contact with questions? Now you don’t have to search your emails for these details, you can visit our Club Calendar to find this information and more! Zoom Class on how to Traverse the Website: Do you want to know more about our Club’s website? www.marcoislandyachtclub.net I will be holding a ZOOM Class along with Vicki Bretthauer, Membership Chair, on how to find things on the Club’s website on Friday, January 15 th at 1:00 pm. We will review the calendar, how to pay an invoice online, how to review a check, how to use the roster and more! There will be an eblast soon on how to sign up for the class!

News from the General Manager

Dear MIYC Members, As we reflect on 2020 it sure has been a year we will all never forget! However, 2021 will be brighter and more promising for all. Over the past few months, I have had the pleasure of meeting many of you, and I must say what a pleasure it has been. In my 27 years in the private club industry, I have never seen a more committed group of members to their club. I look at MIYC as “The Little Red Engine That Could.” I am sure most of you remember that book! 2021 will be an exciting year for MIYC. With the new marina well underway and the project moving along steadily, it will certainly separate us from the rest.

Joe Ceci

We have added a wonderful and talented new maintenance team member in Jeff Caudill. Jeff has been hard at work, and trust me when I say he is great. Next time you’re at the Club, you will also notice we have a new receptionist, Cindy Welliver. She is another wonderful addition to our great team of employees. Please stop by to introduce yourself! We have also been planning new and exciting events for the Membership as well always keeping in mind the protocol for Covid-19. At this time, I am asking each Member to please follow the protocols the Board of Directors have worked tirelessly to put into place to keep all Members and Staff safe and healthy. It is without a doubt that by following these Protocols we will stay on course to keep our Club COVID-19 free. We are not out of the woods yet, but here at MIYC I am proud to say we are doing great! Next, I would like to address RESERVATIONS whether for lunch or dinner or a special event. I cannot stress enough the impact of you taking the time to make your reservation as it has 3 major impacts on the operation overall. One is food cost, (we never want to over order), second is labor cost, (Labor is controllable if we know how many we are serving) and valet service. These 3 components are key to our financial position. Therefore, if we have less than 15 persons for dinner, we will not be offering valet services beginning January 1 st , 2021. So, please email or call or stop by the front desk as we always look forward to serving our Membership. In closing I want to wish you and your families a very healthy and happy new year, See you at

the Club! Sincerely, Joseph Ceci

Safety & Training

In this issue, I would like to address two especially important topics: VESSEL SAFETY CHECKS UPDATE Courtesy vessel inspections are provided by members of the Power Squadron and the Coast Guard Auxiliary. These inspections are most important not only for your safety, but also for legal ramifications and cover required safety equipment and signage for inside your boat and engine room. After a successful inspection, a decal is awarded to be placed on the outside window of your boat. NOTE: THIS STICKER IS REQUIRED of all boaters when traveling with a MIYC sponsored event.

Jim Rich Safety & Training Officer

So that you will not be disqualified from participating in any of this year’s cruising events, please call one of the following persons now to schedule your 2021 Inspection. Although 2021 stickers should be available, in the event they are not, please retain a copy of your inspection as proof of this procedure. Also, even if you have recently had this inspection in 2020, you are still required to have one for the current year. Available local inspectors: Rudi Landwaard Power Squadron 239-389-4444 John Moyer Coast Guard Auxiliary 239-248-7078 Paul Soden MIYC Member (after 1/15) 914-450-8066 Please notify me once you have completed your inspection so that I can record your compliance. Boating Courses I have had many inquiries regarding the resumption of in-person boating courses provided by the Marco Island Sail and Power Squadron. As of this writing, the incoming Education Officer, Ted Reese, has indicated his intent to schedule a basic boating course by mid-January. If interested in this course or any number of online courses provided by this organization, please contact the main office number at 239-393-0150 for updates and availability. HAPPY AND SAFE BOATING! A q u a f i t a t M I Y C Aquafit classes take place at the MIMA pool at 10am on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Don't miss this opportunity to enjoy water aerobics - a low-impact activity that takes the pressure off your bones, joints and muscles. Water also offers natural resistance, which can help strengthen your muscles and you can add resistance devices to burn more calories! Exercising in the pool provides the toning and cardiovascular benefits of exercise on dry land with less strain and stress plus it allows for a greater range of motion helping with flexibility and balance. And most importantly, it is enjoyable fun! We are currently using social distancing and shields as necessary. As with any other exercise routine, just be certain you get medical clearance from your health care provider before taking the plunge. Call coordinator Peggy Frazier with questions ♥ 906 227 7625

Couples Bridge Wednesday, January 13 th 4:00pm

All are welcome to play Couples Bridge at the Club. We have a fun group that plays on either the second or third Wednesday of the month starting at 4:00pm. Card playing goes on for a couple of hours, then cocktails, and dinner at 7:00pm. A “couple” can be a man and woman, 2 women, or two men. We only play as “couples” for the first round and then we mix it up a bit. No pressure, just a fun evening for all. Contact Diana Winterhalter at [email protected] or by phone 614-284-3792 to get on the list.

Noon Bridge

If you are like me, you remember learning to play bridge in college and then there was the “social” bridge at night or on a lucky day when you could get time off from your busy schedule. Then came an even busier time in my life with work, so many kid’s activities, and bridge went by the wayside. Well, it is time to get back in the swing of it. If you play bridge, have ever played bridge, or even want to learn how to play bridge, MIYC is the place to do it. We have a very lively group of “social” bridge players. New Members are most welcome! There is no pressure to remember everything about the game and there are willing teachers to help you remember and learn. We play every Wednesday at noon if there are at least four of us available to play. Chef Bob serves us an amazing “surprise” lunch before we begin play. Marco Island Yacht Club Friday Golf Group Marco Island Yacht Club has a lot of members who enjoy getting out on the links. In recognition of this, we have a golf club within the yacht club! Every Friday morning a MIYC men’s golf group gets together at one of the local courses to enjoy the beautiful Florida weather and golf. This golfing opportunity has been going strong for many years, probably as long as MIYC has been a private, non-profit yacht club. In the winter and spring when we play at Hibiscus, the weekly participants swell to around 50 players on any given Friday. In the summer, when many in the group head north, some weeks we only have between 12 and 20 for play at The Glades. For those of you who have no knowledge about our Friday golf, let me tell you that it is right for everyone of us who can still swing a golf club and bend down to pick up a golf ball! It is purely for the fun of being out

together and enjoying each other’s company on a beautiful 18 holes. Additionally, every 4 -6 weeks, we have a $5.00 tournament that usually has three flights. Everyone has a good chance to win. So, please, if you are looking for some friendly golf on a Friday morning, consider joining our group. Call me at 239-970-0273 or Bob Winterhalter at 239-389-0825, for more information and to get signed up. Dick Irwin, Past Commodore

Reservations Please! Please remember to make your reservations for dinner and events at the Club at least 2 days before the event. Chef Bob and his Staff like to be prepared in order to have the right amount of food and beverage. Also, when you make your reservation for a specific time, please be prepared to be shown to your table at that time. We appreciate your help as this also helps the kitchen Staff serve you in a timely manner.
