It Doesn’t Take a Village to Create Exciting Memories AVOID GOING STIR-CRAZY DURING THE LAST LEG OF WINTER

Now that the holidays are behind us, spring is starting to peek around the corner. It’s about this time when we start looking forward to enjoying the outdoors without being bundled to the gills in bulky winter garb. We’re so close, but we’re not there yet, and this anticipation can have children going stir-crazy before spring arrives in earnest. But fear not! Here are some tips to keep your little ones entertained during the home stretch of winter. HAVE A FAMILY BAKE-OFF With the worldwide popularity of cooking shows, it won’t be hard to find inspiration for your family to host a bake- off in your own kitchen! You’ll all get to enjoy homemade food and spend quality time together without phones constantly in your hands. You could even make an ongoing baking competition over a period of time, regardless of the season. Split into teams — depending on the size of your family — have the little ones help out as much as you feel comfortable with, and designate an impartial judge to determine the winner! Your family will develop baking skills and build a slew of lifelong memories. growing up? It could be “Star Wars,” “Indiana Jones,” or “Ghostbusters.” Chances are you haven’t revisited your favorite sagas in years. Why not spend these chilly evenings sharing your old cinematic favorites with your kids for the first time? While your little tykes get lost in the stories and let their imaginations run wild, you’ll get some much-needed relaxation and popcorn time. Choose the movies to fit the age of your young’uns and mood. PUT ON A TALENT SHOW Chances are your kid wants to be something other than a kid someday. Whether it’s a zookeeper, a magician, or an START A SERIES OF FAMILY MOVIE NIGHTS Do you have a favorite movie series you watched

accountant, fuel those ambitions and turn them loose on a homemade stage. You can set up all you need with just a few cardboard boxes and blankets, though you may want to give out prizes or accolades for each performance. Give them some time to practice, old clothes from the attic, and let them show their stuff to a panel of their peers. To enhance the theatrical experience, play some audience reactions from YouTube and encourage them to give acceptance speeches for their awards after the big gig. When spring finally arrives, your kids will be the talk of the class with tales of their newfound pop culture knowledge and delicately crafted baked snacks. But, more importantly, you’ll be happy to know you made the choice to feed your children’s creativity and cultivate their love for learning while growing closer to them.

Why You Should Pick Up That Controller GAMING WITH YOUR KIDS

there’s a nearly inexhaustible list of games to choose from, and some are more child-friendly than others. At the very least, research the Entertainment Software Rating Board’s (ESRB) rating of a game to make sure its content is age- appropriate. When choosing a game, it’s a good idea to keep your child’s interests in mind. Do they enjoy creating things? Games like “Minecraft,” “Super Mario Maker,” and “Scribblenauts Remix” can act as a great sandbox for you and your child’s imaginations to run wild. Does your child love to solve puzzles? “Snail Bob 2,” “Snipperclips,” and “Portal 2” will have you and your child thinking outside the box for hours. Want to engage in a little friendly competition? “Mario Kart,” “FIFA,” and “Bam Fu” are all excellent choices. GOING BEYOND SCREEN TIME Whether you pick up a controller yourself or just watch your children play games, the most supportive thing you can do as a parent is reinforce the skills they are learning. Understanding that the same creativity and determination that gets them to the end of a level can be applied in the real world is be a powerful thing for a child’s development.

Video games are present in an increasing number of American households. The Entertainment Software Association found that in 2018, 70 percent of parents reported that games were a positive activity in their children’s lives, and 67 percent even play alongside their child at least once a week. Some of you may already be regularly gaming with your kids, but for the rest of you, here are some things to keep in mind. WHY GAMING TOGETHER MATTERS Studies from the University of Pennsylvania, Harvard, and UC Berkeley have shown that video games can have many positive effects on a child, from encouraging critical thinking and social skills to imparting the value of perseverance. Beyond these life skills, video games can also be a way for you to better connect with your child. As game designer and New York Times bestselling author Jane McGonigal, Ph.D., writes, “Games make it easy to build stronger social bonds with our friends and family. Studies show that we like and trust someone better after we play a game with them — even if they beat us.” FIND THE RIGHT GAME Finding the right game to play with your child can be a challenge. Regardless of what platform your child plays on,

THE ‘SMART’WAY TO BRUSHYOUR TEETH

Connecting Your Dental Hygiene to Your Phone

The history of the toothbrush includes some of the most fascinating inventions in dentistry. Starting in 3,000 B.C., the ancient Egyptians constructed brushes from twigs and leaves and inventively used the foliage to clean their chompers. By the 17th century, Europeans brandished a slightly more controversial toothbrush assembled from a sheep’s tibia and bristles of boar hair. Because of the off-putting nature of using sticks and bones as tools for oral hygiene, modern inventors have created a toothbrush that overshadows our ancestors’ devices by a long shot. In 2018, Philips, Oral-B, and Prophix released smart toothbrushes to give tech-savvy brushers an entirely different cleaning experience. Today’s smart toothbrushes use Bluetooth wireless technology to transmit your brushing behavior to your phone’s app. Each brand comes with different bells and whistles, but if you are looking for a fun, more efficient way to manage your dental hygiene, there are several innovative brushes to choose from. The ones geared toward adults send updates to your phone in real time and give you feedback on your brushing habits. This means you can evaluate the >Page 1 Page 2 Page 3 Page 4
