DOES YOUR BUSINESS HAVE A HEART LIKE HUDSON’S HAMBURGERS?

The secret to operating a successful business for over 100 years is to keep it simple.

In my home state of Idaho, the oldest restaurant is a hamburger stand called Hudson’s. I’ve included a picture from 1907 when Harley Hudson first opened the business as well as one of yours truly at Hudson’s earlier this month.

everyone from Kim Kardashian to Clint Eastwood, all of whom make it a point to visit the historic location on Sherman Avenue when they’re in town.

Last but not least, your business needs heart. Hudson’s has a heart. My first double cheese was served up to me by a former classmate in Coeur d’Alene, Todd Hudson. He told me that day, whether it was a classmate from school or a stranger from out of town, he simply loved serving people and giving them a smile with the best burger in the world. As some of you know, I’ve been on a plant-based diet for the past three years. I don’t allow that fact to keep me away from Hudson’s, though. Just this month during a visit to see my family and friends, I dropped into Hudson’s (as I always do) to remind myself of what it takes to keep a business running for 114 years. By the way, the Hudson family likes to tease me about being plant-based, but they still love me. Keys to remember: good at it, like to do it, and profitable at it. Keep it simple and focus on the one thing you’re the best at in the world. Offer a product that is outstanding and consistent. And, finally, make sure your product or company has a heart.

How does a business stay open for 114 years and still continue to thrive? There may be many answers to that question, but I think the best way is by keeping it simple. Ask yourself these questions about your business or product: What are you really good at? What do you like to do? What is most profitable for you to do? In the case of Hudson’s hamburger stand, the answer is simple. A single or a double burger, with cheese or without. That’s it. No french fries, no salads, just hamburgers. Hudson’s, a fifth-generation family business, is good at making hamburgers. They like to serve customers and they are profitable. A soda or a slice of pie are the only other extra items you can add to your order. The burgers are fresh, locally sourced, and ground daily. The second secret is you have to have a product or item people want to buy, and it needs to be high quality and consistent. Hudson’s is open Monday through Saturday for lunch. They’ve extended their hours because the city of Coeur d’Alene is currently one of the fastest-growing areas in America. Having a “Huddy” burger is a “must do” for

Everyone loves back-to-school season because of the shopping spree! Students can get tools they’ll actually use for the entire year while they’re on sale while saving a few extra dollars in the process. But you can get that very same feeling as an entrepreneur, too. Here’s how you can make the most of back-to-school deals this year for your home office. UPGRADE YOUR HOME OFFICE’S AMENITIES. Are you a seltzer water fan? Every year, Amazon almost always has an “Off to College” sale, featuring various products that make dorm life a little bit easier and more convenient. If you want to do the same for your home office, look into a tabletop fridge — or an electric tea kettle, if tea is more your style. Some affordable decor, like wall art or small potted succulents, can spruce up your office without making a mess. If you’re looking to organize your space, consider buying desktop shelves to free up clutter. Then, you won’t have to leave your desk to stay in the zone! LOOK OUT FOR APPLE AND PC SALES! Replacing your current technology can be expensive, but back-to-school sales are the perfect way to spare your wallet. Have an amazing computer already? You can still benefit majorly from staying tuned! During last year’s back-to-school sale, Apple offered 20% off their AppleCare+ service, which gives you two incidents of accidental damage protection every 12 months. Dropped your laptop or spilled coffee on it? They’ll fix it, no questions asked. INVEST IN THE NEW OFFICE CHAIR YOU’VE BEEN WANTING. Don’t sacrifice your posture just because you’re working from home. Whether remote working has turned into a permanent or a part-time solution for your job, you deserve an office chair that can help keep your back straight, preventing pain and slouching. Many big-box stores will be offering sales on office chairs, so take the opportunity to sit in a healthier way today — before the expensive holiday season rolls around! Just because you’re an adult doesn’t mean you can’t have the joy of back-to-school shopping too. We hope you treat yourself to something that’ll make your remote routine even better.

“In our earlier days, my team bullied me into hiring a professional to ‘secret-shop’ our customer phone-in experience. I thought it would be a waste of money because we had already done phone training, and I was confident that our service standards were top- notch. Regardless, I let my team spend the money, and a week later, I got an email from this guy with a recording of his call and some feedback.

Check out Dave’s new book, “Fearless Communication: How to Energize Your Team for Success on the Phone”

I had to eat some humble pie, and I really didn’t want to. At first, I felt defensive and argumentative, but as I listened to the call, I was forced to acknowledge that this guy was 100% right. So, I hired him on the spot to do some in-depth training for my team, fix the process, and help us be better than ever. And our close rates soared!”

ADVERTISING ON PODCASTS? Use These 3 Methods to Measure Your Results

If you’re not already advertising on podcasts, you might want to add it to your list of marketing strategies. According to a 2019 survey from Edison Research and Triton Digital, more than half of all Americans have listened to at least one podcast. That’s over 167 million people your company could (and probably should) be targeting. But once you do advertise on a podcast, you’re faced with a different challenge: How do you measure your results? As it turns out, there are quite a few ways to track the bang you’re getting for your buck. Here are just three of them, ranked from the most effective to the least. PIXEL-BASED TRACKING This method requires a true partnership between the podcast and its advertisers. To make it work, the podcast publisher has to install a pixel (a tiny digital tracking and information-gathering tool) through its hosting provider. Then, you have to install one on your website. Together, the pixels will reveal the connection between podcast downloads and visits or conversions on your site.
