We are delighted to bring together Julian Mason and Georgina McMaster in this two person exhibition. With over 50 paintings between them, the exhibition is a celebration of the natural world and the creatures that we share it with. While their styles of painting are quite different, both artists approach their work with sensitive attention to detail and a unique engagement with the subjects they are painting. Julian Mason trained at the Falmouth School of Art and he has exhibited widely ever since. Julian has been visiting Scotland since he was a child and as a full time painter he now spends months away at a time, painting the places that inspire him most; Glen Coe and Glen Etive, Glenfinnan, Arisaig, Skye, and Iona. As a landscape artist who prefers to paint en plein air, Julian ventures out in all weathers, working in oils for their vibrancy, pliability and resilience in damp, drizzle, ice and snow. Along with the paintings in this exhibition you’ll find OS co-ordinates, notes about the weather that day, and Julian’s frustrated attempts to dislodge midges from their favourite treat - blue oil paint! Georgina McMaster graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 2002 with a BA (Hons) in Visual Communication, specialising in Drawing and Painting. She followed this with a Teacher Training degree. Georgina is the recipient of numerous awards, including the David Cargill Award at the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts (RGI) in 2008. Her striking paintings of animals, birds and insects have real presence, with the character of each creature standing forth against a plain white or linen background. Capturing the character and soul of an animal in their eyes and the softness of the fur or feather on the beast, is what Georgina endeavours to create in her work.

I have always loved animals and was surrounded by animals from a young age; horses, dogs, cats. I love the fact that like people, animals have their own characters, their own personalities. I bring out this almost human like quality by spending a lot of time on their features - drawing out the expression in their eyes. I often paint animals looking out at the viewer, as if they are sharing their story with them.

When I visited Rothiemurchus Estate in Inverness-shire, I took lots of photographs of stags...this one particularly caught my eye....

Ranald Oil on Linen | 120 x 120 cm | £6500

Predominantly my paintings are from photographs that I have taken, but my Mum went to South Africa on safari and she took the most amazing images of these beautiful and elegant animals.

Sky High Oil on Linen | 120 x 120 cm | £6500

For a long time I’ve been painting bees; I’m fascinated by their very distinctive black and yellow colour and the soft nature of the long pile that covers their entire body, making them appear and feel fuzzy. Bumblebees are an endangered species, and the decline in numbers (due to inadequate pollination of certain plants) could cause large-scale changes to our countryside. I have always loved that you can take a bumblebee in your hand and as long as you do not treat it roughly, it will not sting you at all.

Inspiration isn’t hard to find where I live in the countryside; this kestrel was just sitting on a field post next to my garden.
