PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
PRESIDENT GaryW. Ferguson
VICE PRESIDENT Melissa Riegel
As we get ready to start construction on theTennis Improvement Project in August, I am now getting a lot of questions about what’s on the horizon for future projects. The number one question is “When are we going to do the North Course?”. As I have written in the past, your Board has studied a number of potential future projects. The next big project will probably be a complete renovation of our main kitchen. Other worthy future projects include the renovation and upgrade of the North Course, an expansion of the driving range, some enhancements to the South Course, and a number of smaller projects such as replacing the breezeway. As you should expect, the key determinant of when we will be able to do another major project is funding, and since we are committed to no assessment or long term debt, accumulating sufficient capital is totally dependent on a strong, active membership. The bottom line is your full use of the Club and your efforts to help identify and sponsor new members will determine the timeline for future projects.

A NOTE FROM PHIL
Summer Greetings!
The calendar says it is July. The thermometer agrees and so does this month’s schedule of activities. One need only glance at this month’s Bulletin and calendar of events to see that it is jammed packed with opportunities to use your Club. Golf and tennis events, junior activities, swim events, a lobster night, as well as the granddaddy of all get-togethers - our July 4th Celebration, all occur in what I call the “heart of the season”.
The month’s first topic focuses on safety. Summer is just getting started and you wouldn’t believe the number of “close calls” we have already witnessed in the parking lots: driving too fast, not yielding to walking traffic, going the wrong way, young children running free, talking on cell phones while driving in the parking lots . . . surely everyone can appreciate that, if this keeps up, it won’t be long before we are on the receiving end of a really bad experience. Slow down and be cautious. One of the observations noted - about children running free - deserves to be amplified. It may be best to simply reference the Club rule that specifically states,“No child under the age of ten may be left unattended”.This rule was established years ago with the intention that young children should be directly supervised by their parent or other responsible individual. It is the role of the “supervisor” to not only be in the immediate area of the child, but actually monitoring their activity. (This concept is particularly important to share with babysitters.) The aspect of the rule that does remain somewhat fuzzy is the definition of a “responsible individual”. In this instance, it is intended that the individual be mature enough to make sound judgment decisions that may impact the child and be able to effectively influence their actions and behavior. The goal is for the Club to be a safe, fun and welcoming environment for members of all ages. It wouldn’t be summer if we didn’t talk about guest usage of the facility. Each venue (golf, racquets, fitness and pool) has defined restrictions as to the type, number and frequency of guests who may be introduced. All members are encouraged to invite guests to enjoy the Wilmington Country Club experience, as long as they do so within the parameters set forth. But, with the privilege of entertaining, comes the responsibility of properly informing your guest of the expectations established by your fellow members for proper use of the facilities. It is important to share the most commonly violated policies (hats off, shirt tails in and cell phones silent) in advance of their arrival. If you are unaware of the rules, either review them in a Club publication or contact a staff professional for guidance. Speaking of cell phones, it seems a clarification is in order.Your Club’s policy is that their voice use is not allowed anywhere on Club grounds other than in your car. With the exception of the most formal areas of the Club, text messaging, checking email, etc. from your device is permitted. However, please have your device set to a silent mode (no ringing, quacking or barking) and please appreciate that how and when you use your mobile device requires sensitivity to your fellow members and their Club experience. Lastly, this is the time of the year when we encounter the greatest number of lightning delays to the various activities taking place at the Club. Occasionally, we are questioned as to the need to “sound the alarm”. Please know that we take this particular responsibility very seriously. We are fortunate to have lightning detection devices to guide our decision as to when danger is imminent. In spite of our best efforts to monitor climatic conditions and properly inform you of the threat, members must always take responsibility for their own safety. Please keep an eye to the sky and be safe. That way, I’ll keep seeing you at the Club! Enjoy your summer.

MEMBERSHIP DEVELOPMENT
Featured in last month's Bulletin, we thought this membership development video would be beneficial to share again for those that did not have an opportunity to view previously. As always, the continued success ofWilmington Country Club is a direct result of the membership recognizing the importance of nominating colleagues, friends or family who share similar values and would be a positive addition to the Club. The role as a Proposer, that many of you have done or have considered doing, is recognized and we very much appreciate your commitment to the long-term prosperity of the Club.
If at any time you have questions regarding the process or have someone that is interested in membership, please do not hesitate to contact those on the Membership Committee. In addition, Meghan Spero, Membership Development Manager, is an available Club resource that can assist you in efficiently and easily completing the package. She can be reached by calling (302) 655-6171 or via email at [email protected]. Respectfully, Melissa Riegel M embership C ommittee C hairwoman

BOOK CLUB Note that the WCC Book Club will meet on July 9th, the second Tuesday of the month, as many people will be out of town because of the Independence Day Holiday. For Tuesday, July 9th we take a journey back in time to the gritty and glamorous days of old Hollywood in The Girls in the Picture as Melanie Benjamin insightfully traces the female friendship between renowned starlet Mary Pickford and screenwriter Frances Marion. In 1914, Frances Marion, a young writer desperate for a break in Hollywood, meets “America’s Sweetheart,” Mary Pickford, who is already making a name for herself both on and off the screen with her golden curls and lively spirit. These two strong trailblazing women in early Hollywood will take the movie business by storm. The close personal friendship between them was closely linked to their professional collaboration and success. This is a novel about power: the power of women during the exhilarating early years of Hollywood. It’s also about the imbalance of power, then and today, and the sacrifices and compromises women must make in order to succeed. Most importantly, it is a novel about the power of female friendship. Join us on the 9th at 4:00 pm in the Ladies’ Lounge as Patrice Sysko and Phyllis Aerenson lead the discussion of these two exceptional, glamorous women who shaped the movie business. Our August selection is Jodi Picoult’s provocative novel, A Spark of Light, which tackles the hot-button issue of abortion. She does this by presenting a crisis at an abortion clinic.

MEN'S & WOMEN'S INVITATIONAL RECAP
MEN’S INVITATIONAL We hosted our premier men's event, the Annual Invitational, from June 13th-15th. The event kicked off on Thursday with practice rounds throughout the afternoon followed by Stag Night featuring a number of fun contests for players to put their golf skills to the test. Although mother nature shortened the outdoor portion of the evening, it was still a successful opening for what would be a memorable weekend. Our field of 120 players took to the South course on Friday and Saturday, playing five 9-hole matches within their respective flights. The golf course was in great condition, and although Thursday rains softened the greens and fairways, steady winds and difficult hole locations proved to be a real challenge for our competitors. Following the final matches on Saturday, all flight winners and two "wild card" teams advanced to a five-hole, alternate shot playoff to determine an overall champion. Throughout the playoff we were treated to some excellent golf shots and great drama coming down the stretch. On the 18th hole it came down to our teams of SteveWalczak and Pete Cracovaner vs.TrippWay and DanWham. Both teams found trouble off the tee and would miss the green on their approaches.TeamWalczak & Cracovaner faced a difficult shot from short right of the green and failed to get up and down. This set the stage for the shot of the day, where Dan Wham confidently dropped a delicate pitch shot onto the back of the 18th green and let it slowly roll to inside of two feet, clinching the tournament for teamWay &Wham! A great shot to put an exclamation point on a terrific event. Thank you to all of our members and guests that participated in the 83rd Annual Invitational. Please follow this link to view the Invitational tournament webpage where you can view event results as well as a pictures from our three days of play.
WOMEN’S INVITATIONAL What a great day of golf for our Women’s Invitational event. We had a terrific turnout of 92 players, including 26 different clubs over six different states and even another country, Royal Portrush in Ireland! Please follow this link to view the Invitational tournament webpage where you can view event results as well as a pictures from play. Congratulations to our winners – Nicoll Keeney,Val Brothwood, Meghan Perry, and Meaghan Francella in the Heart Flight and Diane Ciconte, Jackie Ciconte, Kathy Perry, and Andrea Scerba in the Diamond Flight.

A MESSAGE FROM ED MCQUILLIN
The month of July kicks off with our annual July 4th celebration on the court with our popular Adult/Junior Round Robin from 10:00am-12:00pm followed by our hit for prizes from 12:30-1:00pm. The Round Robin is for ages 5 and older and will feature doubles play with red, orange, green and yellow balls. At 1:30pm we will have pool games for all juniors. Pickleball and Bocce continue through July every Tuesday night at 6:00pm. Come out and enjoy the play and stop by the pub to have a drink after your game. We will host two grass events in July with our evening ladies member guest on July 11th beginning at 6:00pm and our Member/ Member A and B tennis tournament on Saturday, July 20th. This event will feature our A players from 10:00am-12:00pm and our B players from
1:00-3:00pm. Lunch will be served from 12:00-1:00pm for both groups. Our annual junior tennis finals night will be on Thursday, July 18 with finals being played in all age divisions. This is a fun night to watch some great tennis. On July 23 we have our junior sports banquet where awards are presented to our juniors for tennis, squash, golf and swimming. Our weekly tennis clinics, cardio classes and round robins are in full swing throughout the month of July. See you on the tennis courts. IMPROVING YOUR DOUBLES PLAY WITH ONE QUICK CHANGE I have often said that changing your tennis grip at the net to a continental grip will make the most significant improvement in your doubles game. By making this grip change you will be able to put angled volleys away at the net and play low volleys much better than before the grip change. Hitting overheads are easier since you can hit with more spin for control and will be able to make contact a little later versus hitting way in front of your body with a flatter grip. When getting used to the continental grip you will also be able to improve your spin serve and develop slice on your forehand and backhand groundstrokes when necessary. So make your grip change at the net and your entire doubles game will improve faster than making any other change in your game. Ed McQuillin R acquets D irector
