JUNE 2027

June 2021

UPCOMING EVENTS & INFO: WLMMN Planning Committee Meeting: 6/15 @5:30pm Father's Day : 6/20/2021

The 100 deadliest days in Minnesota are marked by Memorial Day to Labor Day, creating the most dangerous time to be on the roadways in our state. Extra patrols and caution can help make this period of time safer, however, there is still a significant increase in fatal car accidents. June begins one of the deadliest times of the year for drunk driving in Minnesota. From 2012-2016, between June and August, 138 people were killed due to drunk driving crashes, with 414 people suffering serious injuries related to alcohol impaired crashes. Memorial Day has the second highest average fatality rate resulting directly from drunk driving crashes (448) followed by Labor Day (443). “Ultimately, you should spend the 100 days between Memorial Day and Labor Day having fun in the warm weather with friends and family – not in the hospital or attending a funeral after a crash. The hope is that if law enforcement and civilians ban together to promote safe driving practices, the 100 deadliest days will eventually not be deadly at all.”

MADD History : Cari Lightner

13-year-old softball all-star Cari Lightner was killed May 3, 1980 in Fair Oaks, California. She and a friend were walking to a church carnival and at the same time, a three-time repeat offender, out of jail just two days from a 4th DUI arrest, was barreling down the road. He hit Cari from behind, throwing her out of her shoes 125 feet, then fled the scene but was later arrested and charged with her death. In that moment, Cari became the first face of drunk driving victims. She also represents the many pedestrian victims killed or injured due to drunk driving. Cari's mother, Candace Lightner, carried her daughter's photo with her as she worked tirelessly to change drunk driving laws in California to try and make sense of a senseless act and turn her pain into purpose. To this day, MADD holds photos of victims and survivors to put a face on the problem and share stories behind the statistics.
