Keep the Fog Out of Your Windows KNOWING WHAT CAUSES THE PROBLEM IS THE FIRST STEP 111 Woodwinds Industrial CT, Cary, NC 27511 • (919) 461-0010 • www.kellywindowanddoor.com • AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2018

A s the seasons change, people can expect to find moisture on the surface of their cars, lawn, and windows every morning. But there are a lot of people who might not expect to find condensation in their windows. When someone looks through a window, it’s not just one sheet of glass. Windows consist of two panes sealed together, and there’s a thin empty space between them. This void is usually occupied by one of two things — a gas, such as argon, or air. Between the two, using gas to fill the space is the more practical choice, as air alone doesn’t have the same energy efficiency the former can provide homeowners. If you have a fogged up window in your home, then the air-tight seal on your windows has broken, which is also called a seal failure. While this allows the escape of the gas or air inside the window, it also allows any humidity outside of the window to enter that space. This is what causes the foggy and streaky look your windows can acquire, and it grows worse the longer it’s not addressed. Fixing the problem isn’t too difficult, but it can be expensive. The most basic option is to replace the glass in the window, which is the least costly choice. By getting a new pane of glass and tossing the old one, you keep the window frame intact, but that could only be a temporary fix. In fact, the problem could be with the window frame you’re trying to save.

There’s a reason the seal failed in the first place, and the most common cause is the pressure your window frame is placing on the glass unit as it expands and contracts naturally. If you have a window that’s suffered from a seal failure, it’s highly likely that it will happen again. When this happens, the best action plan is to replace the whole window, including the frame, which can be costly. For this reason, think about the state of your home before you consider replacing your entire window. If you’re planning on moving, then you might go with the simpler fix, but if you’re going to live in your house for a while, you won’t lose anything investing further into your property. Knowing that a replacement window is manufactured to prevent seal failures is crucial when you want to avoid future fogged windows. Many replacement window manufacturers use rubber or aluminum to seal the windows. However, rubber is prone to separate from glass, and aluminum isn’t ideal for energy efficiency, which rules out many windows on the market. Look for windows with a stainless-steel spacer, as the stainless-steel is less conductive and can retain heat better than aluminum. Also, make sure that the glass is edge-deleted to avoid future seal failures. This technical process ensures that the space between the panes of glass adheres directly to the glass and not to an intermediate film.

our windows. We provide vinyl windows with standard stainless-steel spacers, edge-deleted glass, and lifetime seal-failure warranties. Kelly Window & Door specializes in full window replacements, but if you’re only looking to replace the glass, we can direct you to a few local glass shops. The moisture can become dense enough to block light from entering a room, and it can increase the chances of mold growth. If you’re interested in more information on this topic, you can call our office at 919-461-0010. We are always happy to talk you through the process and answer any questions you may have. In our experience, once a window begins to fog over, it gives homeowners a sense of unease.

Keep Your Family Safe How Much Sunshine Is Too Much?

T o many people, summer is all about heading outside to enjoy the weather. But getting too much sun can be dangerous. To have a fun-filled summer with your family this year, remember that it’s essential to protect yourself from harmful UV rays. COVER UP Covering your skin is one of the best ways to avoid skin damage.Wide-brimmed hats, long-sleeved shirts, and long pants or skirts can protect your skin from direct exposure to UV rays. While this tactic protects you from the sun, it offers poor defense against the heat. So, if you opt for cooler attire, it’s important to cover all exposed skin with a copious amount of sunscreen. Be sure to reapply every two hours for maximum skin protection. SPEND LESS TIME IN THE SUN If you’re planning to spend a significant amount of time in the sun, consider your environment. Will there be plenty of shade? Will you have to bring your own? What’s the best way to step out of the sun for

a few minutes?Wearing sunscreen and protective clothing are great ways to shield yourself from UV rays, but it’s important to avoid being in direct sunlight for long periods. Taking a break from the sun gives your body the time it needs to recuperate and helps prevent sunburn and heatstroke. COMMON MYTHS ABOUT SUN EXPOSURE Many people think that a tan is better than a sunburn, but the result of tanning is still sun damage. When your skin tone changes due to the sun, regardless of whether it tans or turns red, it’s a result of the epidermis reacting to damage caused by UV rays. Both are symptoms of harmed skin.

While vitamin D is important, the sun does not contribute to its creation as much as you might think. Doris Day, a New York City dermatologist, explains that if your skin were to constantly produce vitamin D from being in the sun, it would reach toxic levels. Vitamin D is the only vitamin that your body can produce on its own, through a common form of cholesterol or 7-dehydrocholesterol. Spending time in the sun does help vitamin D form, but you need far less exposure than you think.

Knowing how to protect yourself from UV rays is the first step to having a safe, fun-filled summer!
