Give Arthritis Pain The Cold Shoulder! HELP FOR ARTHRITIS PAIN
When you experience an injury, dealing with the pain that comes as part of the aftermath is expected. While painful, most of the time when recovering from an injury you can find comfort in the knowledge that the pain is temporary. As your body heals, as you go through the motions of building your muscle mass back and improving flexibility with physical therapy, you know that in time you will feel like yourself again. This knowledge gives you something to work towards, and helps the pain feel more manageable—even when it is intense,
and never-fleeting. (continued inside)
OVERCOMING ARTHRITIS PAIN
Turning to over the counter pain medications to cope with arthritis pain is ineffective as a long-term solution. While some of the medications may provide temporary relief, they will not help you overcome the pain for good. Physical therapy, on the other hand, can provide actual relief from arthritis by helping to rebuild strength in the joints through targeted movements and flexibility exercises. There is a lot of current research trying to understand what precisely causes arthritis to develop in some people, and not in others. Everyone uses their joints every day, and while it makes sense that so much pressure would cause pain to develop over time, it doesn’t explain why the pain develops when and where it does, and why it happens to some people and not to others. Anti-inflammation and Arthritis. One leading form of arthritis treatment is with the use of anti-inflammatory medication. Certain types of arthritis develop as a result of a build-up of inflammation in the body. Specifically, the tendons and ligaments become inflamed as a result of an internal attack from the immune system, which is typically triggered by some combination of environmental factors. Avoiding certain foods and movements can reduce inflammation, and thereby reduce pain. Physical Therapy and Arthritis. Physical therapy is highly recommended for the treatment of arthritis because it can strengthen and support the joints through guided practice of movement and strength building exercises. Typically, the best activities for arthritis pain are low-impact activities. Working with a physical therapist is the best way to ensure that you are practicing the best techniques for overcoming your discomfort.
There is a long list of home remedies that are said to help with arthritis pain as well, and there is some credibility to some of these concepts. For example, losing weight, exercising regularly, and making some dietary changes such as reducing caffeine and sugar consumption are said to help alleviate pain associated with arthritis. However, before you start making any changes to your lifestyle, it is best to consult with a physical therapist. For more information about how to rid your life of arthritis pain, contact us.

Arthritis pain is different. Arthritis doesn’t develop as a result of an injury, but instead develops over time as a result of chronic use, or even as a result of genetic disposition. This can make dealing with the pain of arthritis even more difficult to cope with, as it begs the question: if the pain is coming from inside the joint, is there anything I can actually do about it? Understanding Arthritis Pain Osteoarthritis is the most common chronic condition to affect the joints. Almost 30 million adults in the United States struggle with the condition, andwhile itcan influenceanyoneofany age, itmost frequently develops among those who are most prone to overuse—those who are over the age of 65. Arthritis occurs when there is a breakdown of the cartilage that covers the ends of the bones. This cartilage is what allows the joints in the
elbows, ankles, knees and hips to move with freedom. Without cartilage, the bones would rub against one another with each movement, and would cause extreme pain. As the cartilage breaks down, so, typically, does the bone, and as the shape of the joint changes it becomes even more difficult for it to function smoothly. Furthermore, the ligaments and tendons around the joint will often stiffen, and the muscles surrounding the joint will weaken, making it altogether more difficult and painful to move. While arthritis pain typically develops gradually, the realization of what you are dealing with can still come as a shock. In some circumstances the pain will appear more abruptly, especially when the pain develops in association with a change in weather or other environmental circumstance. BEINGGRATEFUL ISGOOD FOR YOU!
GRATITUDE AND HEALTH Feeling thankful can improve your health in both direct and indirect ways. Some research shows that the experience of gratitude can induce a sense of relaxation, improve the immune system, and decrease blood pressure. But grateful people also tend to cultivate better health habits, like eating more nutritious food, exercising, and avoiding risky behaviors. In addition, the optimism that stems from gratitude can create a healing attitude: research shows that people with optimistic attitudes have better outcomes after medical procedures. GRATITUDE AND JOY Robert Emmons, an internationally renowned scientific expert on gratitude, has found that acknowledging the good in life has a tendency to amplify positive emotions, such as joy and contentment, because it helps us slow down. “I think gratitude allows us to participate more in life,” he says. “We notice the positives more, and that magnifies the pleasures you get from life.” Consider the last time you had a good cup of coffee—did you pay attention to the warmth of the cup on your hands, or the feeling of pleasure as you took the first sip? It’s easy to ignore these small moments of positivity in our day as we rush from one activity to another, but stopping to appreciate them makes them more powerful. GRATITUDE AND RESILIENCE Practicing gratitude can also make you better equipped to handle the difficulties of life that inevitably arise. In fact, according to Emmons, it’s an essential part of the process of healing from trauma. Even despair can be mitigated by the experience of appreciation for the good, however slight it might be. Many survivors of the Holocaust, when asked to tell Governor Rauner signed into law HB 4643 on August 16th, 2018, giving patients direct access to physical therapy services. In other words, patients can now bypass the need to see their primary care physician to request a referral to physical therapy. When patients have a need for physical therapy, they can schedule an appointment for an evaluation with a PT, cutting the time to access pain relief and recovery from injury significantly. HB 4643 was introduced in the Illinois House of Representatives on February 7th, 2018. It passed out of the House by unanimous vote on April 27th, 2018. The Senate passed it unanimously on May 23rd, 2018, sending it to the Governor’s desk for approval. Direct Access has been a long-time goal for physical therapists throughout the country. Most states have some form of direct access. Prior to this major change, patients in Illinois were allowed to have a physical therapy evaluation, but treatment could not be provided until a physician’s referral was obtained. This often took days to get, and it would usually require a visit to the physician’s office. Illinois has now joined many other states in recognizing a physical therapist’s ability to evaluate a patient and determine a plan of care without physician supervision.
their stories, remember most strongly the feelings of gratitude for food, shelter, or clothing that was offered to them. This sense of thankfulness for the small blessings helped them maintain their humanity despite experiencing a horrific tragedy. Many people with life-threatening illnesses also report decreased distress and increased positive emotions when they practice gratitude. Recent MRI studies have mapped the gratitude circuitry in the brain, which activates a sense of reward, fairness, and decision-making—all aspects that help facilitate survival and post-traumatic growth. TOP 4 ESSENTIAL OILS TO RELIEVE ARTHRITIS
1. Peppermint oil: Peppermint may be more popular as candy flavoring, but it has excellent anti-inflammatory properties along with an anesthetic effect that helps in relieving the pain and swelling associated with arthritic conditions, rheumatoid arthritis in particular. 2. Eucalyptus oil: The aromatic leaves of gum trees native to Australia, mainly Eucalyptus globulus, are used for extracting this oil, It has a characteristic strong, penetrating smell. Eucalyptol is the main component of the oil, but it has several other active agents that provide a powerful anti-inflammatory effect. Rubbing eucalyptus oil diluted in a carrier oil over swollen and aching joints often brings quick relief, but it can cause skin irritation in many people. Test in a small patch of skin before using this oil. 3. Ginger oil: Ginger is better known as a culinary spice, but it has wide- ranging therapeutic uses too. The excellent anti-inflammatory effect of ginger oil is useful in treating a variety of inflammatory conditions, including arthritis. The essential oil of ginger is extracted from the unpeeled rhizome of Zingiber officinale. Apart from its signature chemical component
zingiberene, the oil contains several potent phytochemicals such as geraniol, geranial, neral, borneol, camphene, etc. Massage ginger oil diluted in a carrier oil into the affected area and use a warm compress to enhance absorption. Try mixing it with essential oils of lavender or lemongrass. 4. Lavender oil: Lavender oil, extracted from the flower buds of Lavandula angustifolia, iswellknownfor itsanti-inflammatoryandanalgesicproperties. People with rheumatoid arthritis often report a drastic improvement in their symptoms when lavender oil is applied topically. To help relieve pain and inflammation while improving your sleep, put a diffuser by your bed and diffuse essential oils while you sleep.
