HAMBURGER HEAVEN For Zach, Every Month Is Burger Month

Can you do me a favor? If you see my son Zach, don’t tell him that May is National Burger Month. Considering how much he loves hamburgers, the idea of a whole month to celebrate them might make him go a little overboard on the beef. If you don’t believe me, I’ve got a story for you. As you might remember, a few months ago, our whole family was in Colorado for one of Nathan’s hockey games. We stopped at a brewery in Denver for a meal and placed our orders: chicken sandwiches for me and Nathan, a salad for Emilie, and of course, a hamburger for Zach. Zach’s food came out first, and the waiter ducked back into the kitchen to grab the rest of our plates. By the time he returned to the table, Zach had already finished his hamburger!

my go-to meal at a restaurant. If I’m eating out, I want to order something I can’t make at home, like a big plate of barbecue or a crispy Nashville hot chicken sandwich. Sometimes I’ll mix things up and order a “black and blue” hamburger with barbecue sauce and blue cheese on top. “Zach’s food came out first, and the waiter ducked back into the kitchen to grab the rest of our plates. By the time he returned to the table, Zach had already finished his hamburger!” Emilie likes her hamburgers with a fried egg when we go out, but at home, she’s more health- conscious. She buys the Laura’s Lean 96% lean ground beef and claims it’s pretty good, but I think it tastes like a hockey puck! When I do the shopping, I get the fatty 80/20 beef. In my eyes, it’s just fine to indulge — in moderation. When I grill up my “unhealthy” patties, things always go down the same way: The boys, chowing down on their hamburgers: “Thanks, Dad, these are really good!”

Emilie, suspicious: “You got the other kind of beef, didn’t you?”

Both of my kids love hamburgers, but like I said, Zach is the connoisseur — and the more toppings he can squeeze inside his bun, the better. I’ve seen Zach eat hamburgers with everything from bacon to mac and cheese squished on top. His favorite thing to say when his meal arrives at the table is, “I’m going to have to unhinge my jaw to eat this!” That’s what happened in Colorado seconds before his meal evaporated. We almost caved and bought him another one, but he managed to fill up on fries instead. Our family sometimes goes to Red Robin for hamburgers, but I’ve also heard good things about Rookies Sports Bar & Grill here in town. The rumors about their $1 hamburger deal were legendary. Usually, though, I grill up the patties at home. Speaking of which … after writing this article, I think I know what I’m making for dinner! Eighty percent lean beef, here I come.

“That was really good,” he said, “I could use another.”

I swear, he scarfed that thing down in two minutes tops — and this kid is so skinny! It must be nice to be young and have such a high metabolism. Ah, the good old days.

Wishing you a great National Burger Month,

I like a hamburger as much as the next guy, but it’s not usually

PADDLE YOUR WAY TO BETTER HEALTH

Big Benefits of Canoeing and Kayaking

ability. This is because it exercises your hippocampus, one of the largest portions of your brain that is responsible for verbal memory and learning. • If you have trouble sleeping, this activity can improve your sleep. Exercising during the day can make you naturally tired, which helps you fall asleep and stay asleep throughout the night.

The weather is getting warmer, which means you can do more activities in the water. Canoeing or kayaking is an excellent way to get outdoors and be active. Besides looking at the beautiful scenery around you, taking to the water confers several physical and mental health benefits.

• While trying to stay centered and balanced on the water, you will develop more core strength. Paddling helps work your lower back, abs, and oblique muscles. • It’s a form of cardiac exercise that will help your heart circulate more blood throughout your body. It will also improve your endurance , enabling you to go longer distances faster.

PHYSICAL BENEFITS

• Since you’ll be in the sun,

• Paddling can help improve your upper-body strength and muscle tone — because

your body can produce more vitamin D. This vitamin is essential for strong bones and an effective immune system. Canoeing and kayaking are great outdoor activities to help you get your daily dose of physical activity and a mental health boost. So, enjoy the warm weather and be one with nature — this may be your new favorite summer hobby this year!

MENTAL BENEFITS

you’re using your arms to guide yourself through the water with the paddle. Paddling

• While canoeing or kayaking, your body releases serotonin, dopamine, and endorphins from neurotransmitters. This will help boost your mood and self-confidence and improve your focus. • These activities can enhance your memory and learning

helps strengthen your arms, shoulders, chest, and back. • You use your legs to balance, maneuver, and change

directions in the vessel. In turn, this movement helps strengthen your lower-body muscles.

PATIENT TESTIMONIALS Getting Confidence Back

“Thanks to Emery’s professionalism I didn’t need therapy for as long as I’d anticipated. I had knee surgery in February and began Physical Therapy with Emery. We had 12 sessions together. In addition, he gave me a variety of strengthening exercises to do at home. I felt improvement each day

“ Emilie and her staff are the best! I’ve had neck surgery, cortisone shots, and years of chiropractic and physical therapy, but Emilie and her staff are the best! I came in this time with neck pain and have had a vast, at least 80%, improvement — not to mention everyone at Kinetic is such a pleasure to deal with.”

as the muscles surrounding the knee got stronger and as a result the pain decreased. Emery was very knowledgeable and caring about my recovery. He made sure I performed the exercises correctly. Thanks Emery now I can hit the links sooner and return to daily walks now.

PT BEFORE SURGERY? IT’S MORE IMPORTANT THAN YOU THINK

Did you know that in the physical therapy field, spring is considered “surgery season?” A lot of our patients wait for nicer weather before booking elective procedures to avoid the hassle of trudging through the snow during recovery. This is a smart move, and if you’re still waiting for your procedure, there’s something even wiser you can do in the meantime: schedule pre-surgical rehabilitation. You’re probably already planning on PT after your surgery, but enlisting our team’s help beforehand can be just as beneficial. If you go into surgery without strong, healthy muscles and joints, you’ll have two obstacles to overcome afterward: the injury of surgery (because surgery really is just a controlled injury) and extra muscle loss and weakness (also known as deconditioning). Pre-surgical rehab can make a big difference in how long it takes you to recover after surgery. Way back in 2007, researchers found that a pre-surgical rehabilitation program that included PT and education

In 2016, a survey of 22 studies on patients who needed joint replacement surgery came up with

better news. It found that pre-surgical rehab reduced patients’ pain in the month after

surgery and made it easier for them to do things like climb stairs, use the bathroom, and get in and out of chairs. Pretty cool, right? We recommend pre-surgical rehab for most major procedures, but especially for knee replacements, hip replacements, rotator cuff repair, and bone fracture repair. Honestly, regardless of what you’re going in for, it never hurts to get a little stronger and fitter in preparation. Of course, you’ll still need post-surgical rehabilitation, too, but it should be quicker and easier if you take this extra step! If you’d like to get the benefits listed above, please contact us, and recommend any friends or family you have preparing for surgery do the same.

decreased the time people with knee and hip replacement surgery spent in the hospital!

Picking the Perfect Souvenir

A way to preserve or share a piece of your trip is to bring home a souvenir, but choosing a souvenir isn’t always a stress-free experience. How do you pick the perfect souvenir and not just the first thing you see in a tourist shop? Here are some tips for picking a truly meaningful gift for yourself or your loved ones. WHO ARE YOU BUYING FOR? What are your recipient’s interests, or what do they spend the most time doing? If you’re buying for yourself and enjoy coffee, you might buy a local coffee blend to enjoy from home. However, if your recipient doesn’t enjoy coffee or rarely drinks it, that type of gift might not mean much to them. IS IT LEGAL TO BRING HOME? Whether you’re traveling domestically or internationally, there are many regulations that affect which souvenirs you can bring home. Even if you find the item in a tourist shop, that doesn’t mean it’ll be allowed into the country or even onto the plane. And the TSA does take this seriously. In 2012, two tourists were detained at the U.S. border for trying to bring home chocolate Kinder

eggs — a specific kind that are illegal in the U.S. due to the potentially hazardous small toys inside.

PURCHASE A HANDICRAFT. Handicrafts — items created by local artisans — are awesome souvenirs! But make sure you buy where artisans actually sell their own goods, such as an open- air market. Unfortunately, while some popular tourist shops may sell “locally made goods,” many souvenirs intended for tourists are actually made by cheap manufacturers in other countries. KEEP SOMETHING FROM THE ADVENTURE. Bringing a glass bottle to take home some sand is a popular way of creating your own souvenir from a beach vacation. But you can do this with almost any item! Whether it’s stones, ticket stubs from favorite shows and activities, or a handmade item from a class, make sure to look out for souvenirs that’ll remind you of great memories and experiences.

We hope these tips will help you make the best choice. Bon voyage!
