LAMC 2022 Book

Wonder Women of Latin Music presented by

JULY 6 - 9, 2022 NEW YORK CITY

As the world slowly but surely come out of this pandemic, it is our pleasure to put together this return to an in person LAMC. Our most recent virtual version this past April had over 100,000 music industry lovers tune into the panels, showcases and workshops. This is wonderful news as it is one more proof that the interest in our industry is stronger than ever. When the LAMC was first started, the battle cries (or at least the conversation points) were a bit different than what they are now. The alternative in Latin Alternative Music Conference was used in exactly the way we felt it was meant to be. Something new, something different. In our case, it was to promote sounds, sights and ideas that were different to what had been dominating the Latin music scene up to then. To provide an alternative voice to talk about something different. Fast forward 23 years and it is not uncommon to see Latino chart toppers with green or pink hair and the global blurring of the lines happening more and more. As was said at a recent LAMC, “what was once alternative is now the mainstream”. We have seen our original mission statement come to fruition. We thank everyone who has helped or who has tried to make a difference. It all adds up to grains of sand and before you know it, we have a lovely beach. After this year’s conference is over, we will sit back, enjoy the moment and think about what is next. What is the new “alternative”. We hope to continue offering encouragement and opportunities in one way or another in the years to come. We thank you to returning to the in person LAMC - un verano en nueva york - as the song goes!

Maria Madrigal

Maria Madrigal is a Los Angeles-born photographer whose striking images have become visual milestones of the Latin Alternative music scene in the United States. Her art and life represent powerful statements of belonging that helped shape the narrative of Latin youth culture since the 1990s. The daughter of Mexican immigrants in California, Maria discovered photography early on. She fixated on the power of images, becoming enamored by their ability to tell stories, and found they could encapsulate nostalgia while simultaneously proclaiming relevancy in the present. As she honed her talent, she dabbled as an amateur photographer while she was a student in France, later interning in Italy.

A flier promoting a rock en español show in Los Angeles in 1992 changed everything.

She’d never come across such a thing before. At this concert, she met Emilio Morales, whose band was headlining the gig. He was also distributing what was then a photocopied fanzine called “La Banda Elástica” — the elastic band. It was the first outlet in the U.S. to cover Latin Alternative music from around the world. She volunteered to be its photographer, and later their relationship would turn into a business and romantic partnership: The Los Angeles Times described the story of Emilio and Maria as a “Rock ‘n’ Roll romance,” and it was.

Her photographs do not exist merely for the sake of preservation but as powerful statements of belonging and community building.

She’s shot generation-defining portraits of artists such as Gustavo Cerati, Manu Chao, Mon Laferte, Andrea Echever- ri, Enrique Bunbury, Ely Guerra, Julieta Venegas and many more.

Her photos have appeared in Newsweek, The New York Times, SPIN, Village Voice, Los Angeles Times, Orange County Register, CMJ, La Opinión among many other outlets. As a photojournalist, Maria has traveled around the globe, capturing the Latin Alternative movement from L.A. to New York, Mexico City to Buenos Aires, and throughout Europe. In Japan, she documented the underground Mexican hip-hop scene.

Maria Madrigal lives in Los Angeles with partner Emilio Morales, where she is working on a book, a magazine, and a documentary film chronicling the history of La Banda Elástica, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year.
