Harline’s Still Open Reliving 1 of the Best Games in BYU-Utah’s Football Rivalry

I t’s typically around this time of the year that my Saturday afternoons are filled with Cougars football. I’ve been a BYU fan for as long as I can remember. It’s a tradition that runs deep in my family, along with our disdain for the Utah Utes. With a rivalry stretching back to 1922 — the year depends on whom you ask, I’m told — there are many memorable games, including those great 10 years from 1978–1988 when BYU held a winning streak over the Utes. I normally adore and love being around, was getting fussy, and the Utah fans were rubbing their team’s 24- 14 lead in our faces. But BYU wasn’t done yet. Early in the fourth, BYU scored a touchdown, but the extra point was blocked. Still, the Utah lead was cut to 20-24. Then, with three minutes left on the clock, BYU scored again! Now the Cougars were up 27-24, and we just needed our defense to keep the Utes at bay. You know what they say about best-laid plans.

But there’s one game in particular that always sticks out in my mind, and I’m sure many BYU fans love to relive this day, especially given how poorly the Cougs have played against Utah in recent years. Sorry, Utah fans — you may not want to keep reading. It was November 2006, and my wife, our infant daughter, and I were living in Layton, Utah. Due to television agreements at the time, there was only one channel where we could watch BYU football, which we didn’t have. So that weekend, we headed to a local sports bar to watch the BYU-Utah game. It was a classic representation of the rivalry. Half the bar was cheering for the Utes, and the other half was right . The first quarter was great. BYU was up 14-0, we enjoyed great food, and my daughter was a perfect angel. Everything was happy and easy. By the second quarter, the tide started to change. Utah scored a touchdown and a field goal, and by halftime, the score was 14-10. “No big deal,” I thought. We were still in the lead.

Instead of holding them, BYU let Utah take two minutes off the clock and score a touchdown, lifting their lead to 31-27 and leaving one minute for BYU to take the ball from their own 25-yard

line. But we weren’t done yet.

Marching down the field, the game came to one final play with just seconds left in regulation. I can still picture quarterback John Beck taking the snap from the Utes’ 12-yard line and immediately scrambling to his left. The defenders and receivers were running around the end zone while the seconds ticked down to zero. Scrambling back toward the middle right of the field, Beck tossed the ball over his body to a wide-open John Harline, who kneeled in the end zone as he caught the football! With the clock at 0, BYU won the game 33-31! Immediately, half the bar erupted into cheers, while the Utah fans sat staring at the TV, stunned. Suddenly, my daughter was calm and wonderful again, and I was on cloud nine. To this day, I can’t help but smile when I think of that game or the legendary tagline that came from it: Harline’s still open. Unfortunately, BYU really hasn’t done that well against Utah since, but as we work our way through this unprecedented football season and the possibility of fewer games — if any — it’s memories like the ones we made in 2006 that make this season a little bit easier.

Entering the fourth quarter, BYU’s prospects started to look grim. Utah scored more unanswered points, and my patience was running thin. Any sports fan can relate to this. You get so frustrated when the game doesn’t go your team’s way, especially when just moments earlier, you led the game. Plus, my daughter, who
