THE NFL’S NEWEST RULE CHANGES TO DECREASE CONCUSSIONS

Prior to the 2018 National Football League (NFL) season, the league administration introduced two rules aimed at preventing concussions: Players are no longer allowed to “wedge” block — players running shoulder-to-shoulder into another player — during kick-offs, and they can’t lower their helmets when they tackle. Fans and players complained about the “soft” stance the NFL took on the gritty play football was built on. Most notably, former Green Bay Packers linebacker Clay Matthews was subjected to a game-costing “roughing the passer” penalty for tackling in a way that would have been allowed in years prior. The NFL reported that it would be using Matthews’ hit as a teaching tape. Despite the backlash, offseason reports may suggest that these rules have influenced concussion rates. The NFL reported a 24% decline in the number of concussions between the 2017 and 2018 seasons, lowering the total from 281 in 2017 to 214 in 2018 when combined with preseason play. In the regular season alone, the number of reported concussions was 135 compared to 190 from the year prior.

However, it’s worth noting that 2017 saw high recorded rates of concussions. Figures going as far back as 2012 indicate that 2017 was one of the most concussed years in recent football history. Still, NFL and medical officials point to 2018’s decrease in concussions as a positive sign that league initiatives are working. Officials say the new rules helped push the numbers down, and the use of more sideline concussion protocol testing and increased advanced helmet technology aided in this boost. The NFL reported that 74% of its players were now wearing its latest protective headgear, a 33% increase from 2017. According to USA Today, the NFL’s chief medical officer, Dr. Allen Sills, also indicated that medical teams across the league performed more sideline concussion tests than any year prior and saw a 75% decrease in diagnosing. The league is considering testing mouthguard technology that would give medical teams more information for diagnosing concussions. As we prepare for another season of football, there’s no telling what 2019’s numbers will show about the NFL’s latest safety protocols, but if 2018 was any indication, they just might be headed in the right direction.

The term “affordable housing” is thrown around a lot in the news, especially amidst a growing national affordability crisis. More and more young families struggle to afford a first home. But, before home affordability became elusive, one organization began constructing homes for financially struggling families across the country. Since 1976, Habitat for Humanity has served Americans everywhere, and Habitat for Humanity of South Hampton Roads has taken on that mission for the people of Norfolk, Chesapeake, and Virginia Beach. The positive impacts of homeownership are impressive. A home is typically the most valuable asset a family has, and children of homeowners are 25% more likely to graduate from high school and twice as likely to go to college, according to the Habitat for Humanity website. Since it began operating, Habitat SHR has given 225 families the opportunity to become homeowners. Habitat for Humanity homes are simple and efficient, designed to meet all their future homeowners’ needs. The homes are sold at no profit with 30-year fixed-rate mortgages that do not exceed 30% of their income at closing. In order for someone to become a homeowner through Habitat for Humanity SHR, applicants have to M aking A ffordable H omes

meet a few qualifications, such as a need for adequate shelter, the ability to pay for a Habitat home, and a willingness to partner with Habitat SHR. Becoming a partner with Habitat SHR means a few different things, but one of the more unique aspects of being a partner is the commitment to 200 hours of “sweat equity.” Future homeowners must spend at least 200 hours helping construct their own house and other Habitat houses. Applicants are also required to attend homeowner training to learn how to budget, make basic repairs, and do general maintenance.

Future homeowners aren’t the only ones who help build Habitat houses, however. Habitat for Humanity takes volunteers for many of its building projects. If you’re looking for a tangible way to serve your community, and you think you have useful skills they could use on one of their projects, visit the Habitat SHR website for more information.

OKTOBERFEST IN … CANADA? While Oktoberfest in Munich traditionally starts on Sept. 22, the Canadians celebrate during the week of Oct. 6–14. The twin cities Kitchener-Waterloo

With Oktoberfest right around the corner, you may start hearing some of these fun sayings: “I don’t give a Schnitzel,” “Keep calm, and Prost on,” or “You can’t buy happiness, but you can buy beer.” But what exactly is Oktoberfest, and why do so many people celebrate it? Here are some fun facts about it. ROYAL BEGINNINGS Oktoberfest is deeply rooted in Munich culture. It all started with the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen on Oct. 12, 1810. The citizens of Munich were invited to attend the celebration just outside the gates of the city. The celebration’s main attraction was horse racing, which was also a staple event for the next year but has since been removed from the current celebrations. In 1811, a large agricultural fair was mixed into the event, and in 1817, beer pubs and performers were added. Perhaps one of the most famous events during Oktoberfest is the costume parade, where men and women alike dress in old-fashioned garb and march through the streets in honor of Ludwig and Therese’s marriage. The rest you could say is history, or geschichte !

host the largest Oktoberfest outside of Munich, boasting more than 700,000 people in attendance each year. The event has a musical concert dubbed “Rocktober” and a dog parade known as “Dogtober.” Even though the Ontario area is becoming more and more popular, you can still enjoy Oktoberfest on a budget. You can find hotels in the area and surrounding cities for well under $100 per night. Not everyone can make their way to Munich or even Canada to celebrate the fantastical event, but most areas will have something going on. If you love German culture, do a little bit of digging, and you’re sure to find an Oktoberfest event near you!
