AUGUST 2018 LEDGER THE HEART OF HORMONAL HEALTH THE 13375 University Avenue, Suite 100, Clive, IA 50325|www.thelivewellclinic.com|515.279.9900 HOW FUNCT IONAL MED ICI NE CREAT ES A FOUNDAT ION FOR SUCCES S

T his month, I’d like to talk about the link between your overall health, hormonal health, and sexual well-being. While I’mnot going to get into the nitty-gritty of how the whole systemworks, I think it’s important to clear up some commonmisconceptions that have arisen in the modern age of hormone clinics and bad-advice overload. Whether you’re a man or a woman, your hormones are central to your overall well-being. I can’t count the number of patients who have come into our clinic with some sort of hormonal issue. It’s common for my female patients to tell me that they’ve been diagnosed with early menopause, their libido is at an all-time low, they’re feeling crankier and more fatigued than ever, and to top it all off, they’ve been gaining a ton of weight. Withmen, they’ll often admit that they’ve also been gaining weight, having issues getting an erection, balding, and are suffering from persistent depression. Both parties often come to me straight from a hormone clinic after a battery of treatments that did nothing to solve their problem—or, unfortunately, made it even worse. While I don’t think hormone replacement is necessarily a bad thing, the approach suffers from the same issues as the rest of the conventional medical paradigm: It looks to alleviate the symptoms of the problem rather than address it at the source. If a patient comes in who is going into early menopause, they assume that they can simply fix it by flooding their body with extra hormones. Sometimes, this will work, but without a foundation of overall health, this approach will put extra stress on the body and increase its overall toxicity. The patient gets trapped in a vicious cycle, with nowhere to go but down.

body’s “air filter” is clogged up with dust and mold, your body has to work twice as hard to function. Your hormones are being affected by this overall level of toxicity. Your body continues to fill up withmuck that further hinders your well-being, and at a certain point, it simply won’t work anymore—your body is just left with the scant resources it has at its disposal. This results in low estrogen or testosterone production and all the nasty issues this can cause. If you throwmore hormones at the problemwithout addressing overall health, nothing is going to happen— inmuch the same way that blasting clean air through a dirty air filter isn’t going to make your vacuumwork again. Instead, it’s vital to set your body up for success at the most basic level. With good habits and robust nutrition, your body can create the healthy hormones it needs to keep itself running the way it’s supposed to. Sometimes, all it takes is a simple two-week detox to completely transform your hormonal health, without the intense, invasive interventions recommended in conventional medicine.

The fact is, you need to set up a solid foundation before you build a nice house. Or, to look at it another way, you can think of your body like a vacuum. If your

LYNN HEUSS’ STORY

From: ______________________

For Yourself

When Lynn Heuss first came into the Livewell Clinic, she was suffering from persistent aches and pains and occasional, uncharacteristic bouts of anxiety. “I’ve never been a big proponent of using medication to address any of those concerns,” she says, “because it always seemed like it was more of a symptom-based — not a cause-based — kind of approach. When I went to an information meeting at Livewell and learned about their proactive approach to health, I was sold!" “It was very empowering to feel excited to have control over my health,” she says, “rather than simply waiting for some sort of malady to crop up and then react to it.” At the time, she’d been doing a lot of her own research into “alternative” and functional medicine, and though her traditional health care provider was interested in other approaches, Lynn felt limited by what they could offer her. “I like having everything available and having health care providers who are more focused on how to help me take the best care of myself, and not simply taking a ‘one size fits all’ approach,” she says. From day one with Dr. Zac, she experienced a huge paradigm shift and began to understand the inner workings of her body — and more importantly, how to become healthy from the inside out. “The most important things I’ve gotten are the knowledge and belief that I play the biggest role in my health and well- being, and that my health care professionals are there to support me. I know my body, mind, and spirit are getting healthier — sometimes even when I don’t always feel like it — because of my test results and because of how I am able to handle stress and make decisions to prioritize self-care for long-term benefits, rather than being convinced to compromise. I’m sleeping better, I’m comfortable with my weight, my anxiety is being addressed, and I have absolutely no major health issues.” We’re thrilled to have been part of Lynn’s journey toward lasting overall health, and we’re grateful she decided to seek out our services. It’s patients like her that keep us doing what we’re doing, firm in our belief that by building a foundation for overall health, we can transform lives for the better.

Safe Sailing This Hurricane Season

BOOK A CARIBBEAN CRUISE

SAFE SAILING THIS HURRICANE SEASON

With all the talk about hormones and relationships in this month’s newsletter, you may be getting a hankering to get away with your spouse before the summer passes you by. But after last year's devastating storm season, would-be tropical travelers are undoubtedly hesitant about purchasing those discounted plane tickets to the Caribbean Basin. No one wants to face a possible evacuation during their vacation—or worse, be forced to weather a hurricane at a beachfront resort. If you want the most bang for your buck while enjoying the turquoise waters of the Caribbean this fall, consider booking a cruise. Cruise-ship travel is a fun and adventurous way to explore any time of year. After all, what could be more magical than a floating hotel room where you fall asleep in one country and wake up in another? This charming mobility is also what makes cruise travel the safest option for visiting the Caribbean and the coast of Mexico this time of year. Safety and Savings Much like resorts and airfare, cruise lines discount their Caribbean fares significantly during peak hurricane season, from August to October. However, unlike a traditional hotel, these massive ships have the luxury of navigating out of a storm’s path with ease. For

all their ferocity, hurricanes move slowly across the Atlantic and have relatively predictable trajectories. Meanwhile, modern cruise ships carry the most sophisticated weather-tracking instruments, allowing them to bypass even small storms and inclement weather. Flexibility Is a Must The flipside of this ability to dodge storms is the fact that your ship may not be able to stick to its original itinerary. You may have to anchor at an island you weren’t expecting to or miss out on seeing a port you were supposed to visit. If you have your heart set on seeing a specific location, cruise travel this time of year may not be for you. But if you are simply looking for a safe, affordable vacation to a beautiful region, then it doesn’t much matter which white-sanded beach you wake up to next. While unpredictable weather will always be a concern for any vacation, the safety and variety cruises offer make them great options for anyone looking for a Caribbean getaway before the holiday season. So if you have a flexible schedule and a healthy sense of adventure, it’s time to call your travel agent, pack your sunscreen and bathing suit, and head to paradise!
