A Cause That Hits Close to Home ‘Braving the Shave’ for Pediatric Cancer Research Before

J ust last month, the Madden Physical Therapy team participated in the St. Baldrick’s Day fundraiser, shaving pounds and pounds of hair off our heads to raise money for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation to help the fight against childhood cancer. It was a fantastic, fun event, and we received more than $2,000 in donations for a cause that’s close to all of our hearts. At Central Dauphin High School, they have a special service learning program available to the seniors that enables them to intern at a local business for school credit. A few years back, we had a wonderful student named Becca come through our clinic. She was an incredible young woman, driven and empathetic, and as my personal aide, many of our patients grew close to her and her magnetic personality. We developed a close relationship too, a powerful bond between mentor and student, and at the end of her tenure here, she decided to go to PT school and make a career out of her incredible talent for helping patients get back on their feet. But in her early twenties, tragedy struck. She was diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer, and soon after her 21st birthday, she succumbed to the disease. It hit me and the team hard to hear that Becca, who was such an amazing, kind

person, passed away just as she was embarking on her quest to change lives for the better. Ever since then, we’ve pledged to do everything we can to contribute to the fight against childhood cancer, running events each year in Becca’s honor to raise money for the cause. For St. Baldrick’s Day, we set a goal where, if we received $1,000 in donations, everyone in the clinic would get a trim. From the beginning of the fundraiser, we had a huge, moving outpouring of support, with one patient even putting $550 on the line to ensure all of us would go hairless for a few months. In the end, we raised $2,045, smashing our original goal, and on May 4, nearly all of our male PTs shaved their heads bald, including myself, and a couple of our female team members chopped off a ton of their hair as well. About 15–20 patients stuck around for the event, and we broadcasted it on Facebook Live, with dozens of people reveling in our brand-new looks. While some of it has grown back in the month since, we’re all looking a little weirder than usual, but it feels fantastic to be able to do something concrete for a cause we truly believe in. It’s important to me that at our clinic we give back to the community whenever possible. St. Baldrick’s is just one piece of that puzzle, but with Becca’s story still in the back of my mind, events like

After

these really take on a deeper meaning. I can only imagine the incredible places her life would have taken her, but I’m proud to be able to do my part to prevent other families from going through what hers did back then. Our fundraiser was a great, goofy time, and a powerful bonding experience for the team, but first and foremost it was a small token of Becca’s impact on all of us. As the razor buzzed me down to the most ridiculous haircut I’ve sported, she was firmly on my mind. Thanks to everyone who watched us “Brave the Shave,” and a HUGE thank-you to everyone who showed their support with a donation. I can’t express just how much it means to be part of such a generous community, eager to make pediatric cancer a thing of the past.

3 Awesome Dads Fathers Who Put Their Lives on the Line for Their Kids

Greg Alexander was startled awake at dawn by the screams of his 16-year- old son, Gabriel. He rushed out of his hammock to see a black bear dragging his son away by the head. Without hesitation, he kicked the beast in the side, and when that didn’t work, he leapt onto its back and started punching it in the face. When the bear finally released Gabriel, Greg threw rocks until it fled. His son was hurt but made a full recovery in the hospital over the coming weeks.

This Father’s Day, thousands of dads will receive a “No. 1 Dad” mug to sip coffee out of at the office. But the following dads took that “No. 1” to a new level. Brian Munn gave his son a liver transplant. When doctors discovered that baby Caleb Munn had a rare disease called biliary atresia, they told his parents that he was unlikely to survive past age 2 without a liver transplant. Luckily, his father was a perfect match, and he eagerly donated part of his liver in March of 2015 to save his son’s life. Greg Alexander battled a bear for his son’s life.

After a long, hazardous journey, he arrived in Tabqa to embrace his two daughters. To leave the caliphate — under penalty of death — they hitched a ride to the border one night and crawled along a railway line until they were within 70 meters of the border. Then they ran under fire from Turkish border guards until they could scramble into tall grasses. After some help from the Russian consulate in Istanbul, they made it back home, together again and safe.

Artur Magomedov saved his daughters from ISIS.

Artur Magomedov was devastated to discover that his wife had taken his 3- and 10-year-old daughters from their home in Dagestan under the cover of night, flown to Turkey, and crossed into Syria to join ISIS. But he resolved to get his kids back.

ACL Rehab Done Right!

Autumn came to Madden after having an ACL reconstruction. She was a competitive NCAA basketball player. The thought of not being able to be active was a tough thing to overcome. We saw Autumn throughout a year’s time and were able to get her back to feeling like an athlete again. By the end of her therapy, we were doing complex agility and plyometric drills that included pivoting and sprinting. She responded wonderfully to therapy. Here is what she had to say about her time here with us:

“Such a great staff! Everyone here is welcoming and friendly, and I had a great experience working with Kelsey and Mitch. Before coming to Madden, I could barely walk without pain, a result of multiple knee surgeries and arthritis. As a lifelong athlete, the thought of not

being able to run — let alone walk — without pain was devastating. After several months of PT, I have zero pain and lots of motivation. I feel normal again! Thank you so much, Kelsey and Mitch! You have truly changed my life for the better!” –Autumn A.

Are You at Risk of a Fall? The #1 Risk of Injury for the Elderly — And How to Prevent It

T hough it doesn’t get a lot of public attention, balance problems are a serious issue plaguing our country’s elderly people. Statistics show that more than 1 in 4 people over the age of 65 take a dangerous tumble every year, leading to all kinds of problems, from broken bones to tragic, fatal injuries. What’s worse, less than half of these elderly patients let their doctor know about the incident or seek help for their poor balance, even though after falling once, patients are twice as likely to fall again — often with much more dire consequences. These factors all combine into a perfect storm, making falls the No. 1 cause of death from injury among the elderly. There’s no denying these facts paint a harrowing picture for elderly folks and their loved ones. Luckily, there is some very good news: Most falls are preventable!

As people age, their physical strength decreases, and the vestibular system,

responsible for maintaining balance begins to degenerate. It’s also common for injuries or issues to arise that interfere with a patient’s normal gait, making it even more difficult to stay upright. In addition, many elderly patients need to take medications to maintain their health, some of which come with side effects that inhibit balance. Though many of these risk factors are difficult to avoid, studies show that a guided exercise program focused on improving strength, mobility, range of motion, and balance can have tremendous benefit in preventing falls before they become an issue. At Madden Physical Therapy, our experienced therapists are dedicated to helping our patients stay firmly on their feet. Our comprehensive fall prevention program

starts with an assessment of the patient’s current condition and risk of fall. Then, we target specific areas for treatment, guiding patients through a set of light exercises tailored to their precise needs. After just a few sessions, patients will begin to experience the immense benefits of improved balance. By the time they’re done with treatment, they can have total peace of mind knowing that their risk of falling has been dramatically curbed. There’s no need for you or someone you love to live in fear of falling down.
