T H E BULLETIN MARCH 2017

a newsletter for members of the wilmington country club

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE In past years, when I was writing the March President page, we were in the middle of the winter doldrums with snow covering the golf courses and little, if any, outside activity going on at the Club.Well, not this year! As I sit here writing, it is 67 degrees outside and sunny. Many of our diehard golfers have played 5-10 rounds of golf in the past month. This weather has certainly led to increased activity around the Club. When you combine this with our usual dining, fitness and racquet activities, it is wonderful to see the Club busier at a time when things usually are slower. This also translates into good financial results for the Club with January’s revenue and “bottom line” both better than budget. February also looks promising with better than normal activity. Now comes March which is traditionally the most challenging financial month for our Club. By now, many of us have had enough of winter and head for warmer climates. Also, the schools have spring break and families take some vacation time. This leads to some of the slowest activity at the Club. So I encourage all of us, if you are here in March, to come use your Club. Your committees and staff have many great activities planned to keep us

A NOTE FROM PHIL

March Greetings! As we enter into what we hope will be the waning days of winter and prepare for the upcoming outdoor season, there are no detailed topics to discuss. Instead, I have a number of various items that are of a small, yet significant in nature. Think of it as my “Spring Cleaning”. As with any “Spring Cleaning”, some items you dust off and retain, others will be discarded because they are no longer necessary or relevant to your current situation. I’ll leave it up

reestablish the water fountains and ball washers. • In addition to all our regular and routine maintenance, there were a couple of Clubhouse Improvement Projects slated to take place over the winter. The renovation to the Men’s Locker Room wet areas is progressing and turning out quite nicely. We have also replaced the carpet in the Ladies’ Lounge. In April, we anticipate replacing the carpet in both the Men’s and Ladies’ Locker Rooms, as well as the halls and stairways that access those areas. This will be a pretty sizeable effort that may create some moderate inconvenience for a few weeks. We’ll keep you posted. • One of the great privileges of being a member is the ability to utilize your Club’s facilities for private entertaining. If your plans for the year include the opportunity to host a party or business gathering this year, please consider having it at your Club. Our reputation for ease of planning and flawless execution is well known. Let us prove it to you. • Annual, semi-annual and quarterly food minimums come due at the end of the month. In the event you fail to fulfill this obligation, please don’t ask for relief - none can be given. • Your usage of the Fitness facilities has been strong all winter. At times, it could even be considered crowded. To help keep the space safe and organized, please return any exercise devices to their appropriate “home” after use. It is also very important, especially during “cold and flu season” to use the anti-bacterial wipes before and after using a piece of equipment. • Also in the “health and fitness” arena... don’t forget that Massage Treatments are available in the Treatment Room located between the Ladies’ Locker and upper level Men’s Locker Rooms. More information and appointments can be gained by contacting the Fitness Desk. • Sometime this month, the 2017 Edition of the Rules and By-Laws Handbook will be made available. We will notify all members via email with a link to the online version. Hard copies will be placed in each Senior Member’s locker with additional copies available at the Front Desk for pick-up. Once you receive yours, please take a moment to review it. Knowledge and adherence to the Club’s rules and schedules will enhance your usage of the facility as well as that of your fellow member. As always, thanks for reading and I’ll see you at your Club. Phil Iannelli General Manager

to you to determine the appropriate course of action. • Just as we did last year, March will be the final month of operating under the winter schedule. Full Tuesday service will resume beginning April 4th. Towards the end of March, if weather and conditions dictate, there may be some “early openings” in the Bag Room,The Hut andThe Pub.These will be communicated in theWeekly Happenings. •We will celebrate St. Patrick’s Day on Friday, March 17th in all areas. All day, we will be featuring traditional Irish favorites (in addition to the regular menu) as well as a special selection of Irish beer.Yes, you can get them green if you insist! Additionally, in the Pub, we will be hosting a special multi-day March Madness Party, Thursday through Sunday, March 16th through 19th. Of course, we will have a bracket competition as well. Details will be shared via email and our social media accounts. • Social Media accounts?? Yup. Join us on Facebook,Twitter and Instagram to keep up with all the latest that’s going on around your Club. Click here to see what you’ve been missing and to sign up. Don’t worry - all our accounts are private so you aren’t really “out there”. • We will all be adjusting our clocks (spring ahead) on March 12th. I hope you take full advantage of the longer daylight hours to use the Club into the evening.Weather permitting, we’ll also expand the hours of the Bag Room/Range as required. •With the mild winter, we have enjoyed several days of “bonus golf ”. In fact, enough has been played on the North Course to necessitate reopening the Snack Bar on the “honor system”. A limited assortment of beverages and snacks are available for members to self-serve and sign. Because it is so early and the risk of a hard freeze is likely, it would be premature to

BOOK CLUB Our Tuesday, March 7th selection takes us to the village of Piombino Dese, Italy, where Sally and Carl Gable enchant us with Palladian Days , their fascinating account of acquiring and restoring one of the greatest villas in Italy. The house they chose, Villa Cornaro, was built in 1552 in the countryside outside of Venice by Andrea Palladio, a celebrated Renaissance architect. With both humor and loving detail, Sally shares their excitement in acquiring theVilla Cornaro as a summer home and in finding the right people to help them manage and restore it. Their discoveries about the history of Villa Cornaro and the former people who lived there are an adventure story itself. Loving Italy, the Gables immerse themselves in the life of their village. Sally works diligently to learn the language, make friends with the townsfolk and share in their joys, sorrows, and even recipes. Several times a year the Gables open the grounds of the villa for musical and theatrical productions at the behest of the town or the province of Padua. Sally also gives villa tours to earn some money to help with the upkeep of the estate. Join us at 4:00 pm on the 7th as Francie Pyle leads the discussion of this captivating account of owning and restoring one of the greatest villas in Italy. You may get so excited that you will want to see the villa yourself by going on one of Sally’s tours. Our selection for April is The Twelve Tribes of Hattie by Ayana Mathis who is the New Castle County READS 2017 author. This is the story of Hattie Shepherd, who in 1923 flees Georgia for Philadelphia in hopes of finding a better life and of leaving the violence, deprivation and injustice that black Americans encountered in the South. It’s the story of a mother’s enormous courage as she deals with the tragedy and tribulation that afflict her offspring. It’s the story of the resilience of the human spirit.

Terra d’Oro, Barbera, 2014 Glass $7.50 / Bottle $30.00

Long celebrated in the Piedmont region of Northern Italy for its role in Barbera d’Alba and Barbera d’Asti, Barbera has found a home in the rolling foothills of Amador County.Amador Barbera produces elegant wine with layers of soft fruit, exotic spice, and voluptuous mouthfeel.Terra d’Oro Barbera was fermented in stainless steel for a full two weeks, extracting maximum color and flavor. For this vintage, the Barbera was aged in small French and Hungarian oak barrels for 15 months. Terra d’Oro Barbera showcases the refreshing acidity of the grape with inviting aromas of sweet red fruit and fresh toasted bread. Enticing flavors of cherry cola and blueberries coat the palate, and polished tannins lead to an elegant, round finish. Grapes for theTerra d’Oro Chenin Blanc &Viognier are handpicked from select vineyards. The Chenin Blanc, a versatile white grape varietal that can range from dry to very sweet and typically offers high acidity, comes from the Clarksburg appellation in the Sacramento Delta. This region is well-known for producing Chenin Blanc thanks to the rich soils and maritime influence.TheViognier is from our Voteau Vineyard in Amador County. The high elevation, warm days and cool nights bring intense varietal character to the fruit.Viognier is most notably produced in the Loire Valley of France and is great for blending with Chenin Blanc to add a plush character to the wine. The Terra d’Oro Chenin Blanc & Viognier displays luring aromas of juicy tropical fruits, fresh lemon and hints of spice. The palate showcases flavors of pink grapefruit, papaya, and subtle sweet mango. JUST BREATHE: COMBINING THE BENEFITS OF OUR BALANCE CLASS & BREATHING Article by: Mary Currie, Director of Yoga

A NOTE FROM GROUNDS

As we optimistically exit the restraints of winter months and enter the start of our real golf season, we’d like to turn some attention to a subject that normally draws little print attention but is very often the subject of golfer’s discussion... the rough. It goes without saying that golfer expectations about the quality of turf on golf courses has increased dramatically as popularity and media exposure have grown over the past fifty years. Greens, tees, fairways, and even bunkers have grown in demand for predictability and consistency. More recently, for probably similar reasons, rough areas are starting to fall into a similar level of attention. Being located in the Mid-Atlantic is a significant and somewhat uniquely challenging factor when it comes to establishment and maintenance of rough grasses on the golf courses. Prolonged periods of heat and disease-stress during the summer, limited coverage of irrigation, copious populations of trees competing for water and nutrients, as well as high amounts of cart traffic result

in a tricky dilemma to establish and maintain consistent rough. Grasses available for rough add greatly to the challenge. Of the common varieties of cool season grasses (the Mid-Atlantic is too cold for season long warm weather grasses such as Bermuda or Zoysia) that are used for golf course rough in this region, each has their own list of positives and negatives. In most climates, choosing a rough grass that is best suited for the area and expectations of the golf facility is fairly straightforward; however, this idea does not hold true for the Mid-Atlantic region. Unfortunately, there is no perfect species of grass that will stand up to the wide-ranging weather patterns and temperature differences experienced in this area throughout the year. Turf-Type Tall Fescue (which was used on the South Course primary rough and green surrounds during the 2007 renovation) is the preferred species for our area. The lower water requirements, reasonable disease resistance, and moderate tolerance to cart traffic place it above other contenders.Add in the fact that it is resistant to nearly all of the chemical control options available to combat undesirable weeds, such as Poa annua, it might be seen as ideal. The South Course already has a strong population of Turf-Type Tall Fescue, but the North Course is a mixture of different grasses. We use Turf-Type Tall Fescue in any seeding we do on both golf courses in an effort to increase populations and have already initiated a more aggressive pre-emergent chemical control program aimed at providing a cleaner weed free stand of rough throughout the season. This application combined with our typical spring preventative weed control should reduce the need for spot treatments on broadleaf weeds throughout the golf season. This will also allow for more time and man hours available for cultural programs dedicated to compaction relief through the use of vertical slicing and other aeration methods. We will be implementing a newer, slightly more expensive, fertilization program that takes advantage of slow release technology for nitrogen uptake to the plant. Several coatings of protective layers that break down at different temperatures allow for season long feeding of the plant through one application in early spring time. This dramatically cuts down on labor costs associated with spreading fertilizer throughout the season and will allow us to focus more of our attention on weaker heavily trafficked areas. In conclusion, as our programs continue to increase the amount of Turf-Type Tall Fescue throughout the property, growth habits in the rough will even out and ultimately provide more consistent and predictable lies. As golf and technology advance, and our players expectations continue to grow, our current and long term program commitments will follow suite insuring the very best presentation we can accomplish. We are fast approaching the new golf season as the long, cold winter months come to a close. The Learning Center and Driving Range has seen increased usage as our membership attempts to shake the rust off from the winter hiatus. With the arrival of the new season, there are many items of interest that should be noted on your calendar. Here are a few below: Early season sign-up sheets will be e-mailed to you and available on our website within the upcoming weeks. If you are not computer savvy, you may stop by the Golf Shop and seek assistance from our staff. The 2017 GAP Team Matches are fast approaching, and by now you should have received an e-mail with registration information. The GAP Matches are a traditional kick-off to the Men’s Golf season and offer a unique opportunity to experience both a competitive and social event with other golfers in the Philadelphia area. Wilmington fields 3 separate teams to compete home and away each week. The matches will take place this year on Sunday, April 23rd & 30th and May 7th. More information regarding the GAP Team Matches may be found on the GAP website at: http://gapgolf.org/detail.asp?id=2. Please contact the Golf Shop if you are interested and indicate your availability for each week as well as your preference of playing home or away. Please note, all participants must have a valid GHIN Handicap. We are looking forward to a successful GAP season! Additionally, we have registration dates coming up for some of the year’s most popular events:

MARCH 17TH - MEN’S SPRING TWILIGHT LEAGUE BEGIN AT 9:00 AM

MARCH 22ND - MEN’S OPENING EVENT SIGNUPS BEGIN AT 10:00 AM

MARCH 31ST - MEN’S INVITATIONAL BEGIN AT 9:00 AM

It is important to note that entries for both events will be taken by telephone only . All players must contact a member of the Golf Shop Staff at (302) 655-6022 to register. No voicemail messages or e-mail entries will be accepted. In the event that you may not be able to personally call to register, you may have anyone call for you, however, there will be a limit of one entry per phone call. These events traditionally fills up fast, so make sure you have the date marked and are ready to register. Once the events are sold out, we will place any additional entries on a waiting list. We will provide additional details concerning these events later in the month. Whether you are a competitive golfer, a casual golfer or a beginner, we hope to serve your needs. Make a pledge in 2017 to participate in an event, take a few lessons and try some new equipment.Take advantage of all that Wilmington Country Club has to offer in the great game of golf.

CLUBS FOR YOUR GAME ARTICLE: BOB LENNON

Spring is nearly upon us, which means the golf season is fast approaching! Following up on last month’s article about obtaining the proper putter for your putting stroke, this month’s topic is about obtaining the proper clubs for your golf game. The first step in preparing your bag for the upcoming season is to realize that the days for a set of clubs to come in one box are over. Filing your bag with the essential equipment for a round of golf is now a process of picking and choosing between several types of clubs. Keep in mind when choosing your weaponry that you are only allowed a maximum of 14 clubs in your bag according to the rules of golf. To help you start the process of preparing your bag, we recommend you include two important clubs - a driver and a putter. The driver will be your longest club in your bag, both in length and distance. The driver will also be your club of choice most of the time when hitting off a tee. A putter is essential in your bag since it is used on and around the green. That leaves 12 other club options you can use to fill your golf bag. Most sets of irons sold today start with a 5 iron and go through the pitching or gap wedge. That brings the total number of clubs in your bag to 9. Here’s where the fun starts… choosing the next 5 clubs. An important point to keep in mind when choosing your clubs is that there should only be a 10 yard difference in distance from club to club. Clubs included to fill the rest of the gaps could be fairway woods, hybrids, long irons and different lofted wedges. We have a number of new demo clubs available to try. We recommend you come by the Golf Shop and ask the staff to help figure out how to fill the yardage gaps in your bag. Good golfing!
