PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

PRESIDENT GaryW. Ferguson

VICE PRESIDENT Melissa Riegel

This is the time of year when I am reminded why Wilmington Country Club is so special. Although your Club is quieter this time of year, it remains very active. The squash courts are packed with adult and junior regular play and tournaments, the paddle program is in full swing and the demand for indoor tennis courts is as high as ever. In case you were wondering, the Tennis Improvement Project Committee continues to work on the building plans so we will be fully prepared to move forward when finances allow. The fitness facilities remain very busy and many of our members enjoy playing bridge. And, of course, there are the Pub,Tavern, Dining Room and Cafe to enjoy. It is also a time when you can feel that spring is around the corner and we start getting prepared for the golf season. So why does this remind me thatWCC is a special place? Because we are truly a full service Club and there are programs and facilities for all ages and interests to enjoy. So come out and enjoy all your Club has to offer and, if you have suggestions for how we can make it even better, I would enjoy hearing from you.

A NOTE FROM PHIL

As we enter into the final month of winter (fortunately, it hasn’t been a difficult one . . . so far), the team and I are getting focused on the upcoming season. Spring is right around the corner and we are hopeful it will be a much improved version of the last two. Nothing exemplifies spring better than the return of flowers and other plants. Annuals and perennials always make an appearance to remind us that the calendar is changing. One of our preparations for the start of the outdoor season also includes the need to share several topics. In thinking about it, they are not too dissimilar from flowers. Some are of the annual variety - here for a while then replaced with a new focus. Others are more of the perennial nature and get shared every year. • Following the same schedule as we have in recent years, March will be the final month of operating under reduced winter hours. Full Tuesday service will resume on April 2nd. Towards the end of the month, if weather and conditions dictate, there may be some “early openings” in

the Bag Room, Golf Course Snack Bar and Pub.These will be communicated in theWeekly Happenings (we can only hope!). • A few weeks ago we initiated a new tech format for you to provide feedback. Even though we preannounced the kick-off of the effort, the FAQ is “why”.The answer is simple. We are committed to exceeding your expectations each and every time you visit your Club and we want to know how we are doing. It isn’t forever. We’ll run it for a couple of weeks in an area to gather focus points then shift to another.Although this program is starting in F&B, we envision the questions changing to assess all areas. We are hopeful that, if asked, you will take an extra moment to participate. We all benefit. • While on technology, two weeks ago our communications team rolled out our first “Club App” and the response has been huge.We are already approaching almost 500 members who have downloaded and are currently receiving Club information using this format. It’s easy to download (search “ForeTees ClubCentral” on the App Store or Google Play Store) and provides enhanced convenience for you to enjoy all your Club has to offer. • On Sunday, March 17th, we have a double header of sorts in Pub37 . . . St. Patrick’s Day and Selection Sunday for NCAA March Madness. Once the field for the Big Dance has been set, members may participate in an online bracket challenge. We will be using a different program this year, so take special note of an upcoming communication that will outline how and when to fill out your bracket. • Annual, semi-annual and quarterly food minimums come due at the end of the month. In the event you fail to fulfill this obligation, please don’t ask for relief - none can be given. Those individuals are encouraged to reach out to us to see if there might be a better option based on your Club usage habits. • I understand that you are really excited and in a hurry to get to the Club, but the few seconds you think you might save by avoiding the drive in front of the Club and traveling the wrong way through the parking lot just isn’t worth the risk.Trust me when I say that MOST members are used to only looking for traffic coming from the proper direction and a vehicle that is traveling opposite the flow will NOT BE SEEN. Please follow the proper flow of traffic and slow down. It’s also not a bad time to mention that you should not be on your phone either. Safety first. • Sometime this month, all 2019 annual publications, schedules and events will be completed and made available. Other than the Rules & By-Laws Handbook that is still printed and distributed in hard copy, these publications will be shared electronically. Watch for a “push notification” on your app to tell you when they are ready to access. • Part of the 2019 operating budget indicates an increase in the amount of private entertainment activity. If your plans for the year include the opportunity to host a party, business or charitable gathering, please consider having it at your Club. Our reputation for ease of planning and flawless execution is well deserved. Plus, we all benefit from the business. I know that March is a time when many of you get out of town, and the “snowbirds” haven’t returned. Not judging, but it can get pretty quiet around the place. When you are around, please don’t forget about your Club.We are here for you. And we all benefit from your continued support. As always, thanks for reading and I look forward to seeing you at your Club! Phil Iannelli G eneral M anager

A BIT OF HISTORY

LIQUOR LOCKER For many years, Wilmington Country Club members could rent a liquor locker for the storage of “adult beverages” purchased from the Club. When the new clubhouse was built at the Kirk Road Site, a beverage store was placed on the right entrance to the mixed grille, now know as the grilles. The beverage store featured private label bottles of bourbon, Canadian whiskey, gin, scotch whiskey and vodka. It was the personal responsibility of Dominick Michini who came to our Club from Greenville CC as a bartender in 1964. The wine steward at that time was Gerry Lawler. Liquor stored in the lockers were purchased from the Club by members and was to be used on site only on Sundays and on days when the Club was prohibited from selling alcoholic beverages. Of course, some of the sales were stored for “future use” and for off-site use.

The Board of Directors struggled with the issues of furnishing liquor for members on those days when sales were prohibited and with the possible loss of the Club’s tax exempt status were it found to be in violation of IRS ruling 68-235, which prohibited the sale of liquor to members for off-premises consumption. On August 19, 1969, the House Committee, chaired by J. Sellers Bancroft, unanimously agreed to adopt House Rule Number 10A: “Liquor purchased in bottles from the Club can only be consumed when the bars are closed and on Sundays when not used as a supplement to a meal.” At that same meeting, the Committee agreed that “In order to better control the sale of alcoholic liquor bottles for locker use and to ensure compliance with ABCC Rule No. 26, the Committee agreed that all bottles must be appropriately marked and identified as having been purchased from the Club.”

Evidently the lack of profitability of the liquor store coupled with the possible endangerment of the Club’s tax-exempt status caused the Board of Directors to close the store in August or September of 1969. The minutes of the October 21, 1969 House Committee meeting contained the following statement. “Mr. Bissell analyzed the food and liquor results for August and the seven-month period then ended. Our results appeared to be in line except liquor profits increased in spite of termination of off-premise sales.” After the beverage store was closed, that room was used briefly as a barbershop. Around that time a masseur was available by appointment for the members but light demand soon ended that service.

Please note John F. Porter III reviewed the Club’s minutes and was responsible for discovering the liquor store information.

BOOK CLUB

ThereThere byTommy Orange is ourTuesday,March 5th selection. Fierce, angry, funny, heartbreaking - Tommy Orange’s first novel is a wondrous and shattering portrait of an America few of us have ever seen, and it introduces a brilliant new author at the start of a major career. As we learn the reasons that each person is attending the Big Oakland Powwow - some generous, some fearful, some joyful, some violent - momentum builds toward a shocking yet inevitable conclusion that changes everything. Jacquie Red Feather is newly sober and trying to make it back to the family she left behind in shame. Dene Oxendene is pulling his life back together after his uncle’s death and has come to work at the powwow to honor his uncle’s memory. Opal Viola Victoria Bear Shield has come to watch her nephew Orvil, who has taught himself traditional Indian dance through YouTube videos and will perform in public for the very first time. There will be glorious communion, and a spectacle of sacred tradition and pageantry. And there will be sacrifice, and heroism, and loss. Here is a voice we have never heard - a voice full of poetry and rage, exploding onto the page with urgency and force.Tommy Orange has written a stunning novel that grapples with a complex and painful history, with an inheritance of beauty and profound spirituality, and with addiction, abuse and suicide. Join us on the 5th at 4:00 pm in the Ladies’ Locker Room as Frances Pyle leads the discussion of this powerful book. Our April selection, Educated: A Memoir by Tara Westover, is an unforgettable account of a young girl who was never allowed to attend school until she leaves her survivalist family in the mountains of Idaho and goes on to earn a PhD from Cambridge University.

A NOTE FROM GROUNDS

It’s hard to believe two months, or just over 16% of the year has passed. The month of March is a transitional time for the Grounds Department, as we head into the shoulder season for the months of April and May. In March, our staff will begin to monitor phenological indicators, such as forsythia bloom, for timing of pre-emergent applications ranging from grassy weeds (Poa annua, crabgrass) to pesky insects. We have also received some alerts that in a short time, we will be seeing the return of our migratory winged friends. Our team will be steadily preparing their homes surrounding the reservoir and throughout the property in the coming weeks. In addition, it is our hope Mother Nature will be kind to us in preparing the grounds for the coming season to either finalize work such as bunker modifications or fairway drainage installations. From a staffing perspective, we have been actively recruiting prospective candidates to add

to our team. Success breeds success and we want team members that have a strong desire to push themselves and others in an effort to achieve our collective goals all while growing in our program. Recruitment is an on-going process as we strive to continually cultivate and produce the next generation of agronomists for the golf course maintenance industry. We are excited to announce below our new team members that will undoubtedly upgrade the overall member experience in the short and long term. Jacob Shughart is currently the assistant superintendent at Woodmont Country Club located in Rockville, Maryland. His past experience includes a season at the Maidstone Club in East Hampton, NewYork, as well as, various volunteering at tournaments such as the Quicken Loans National,The Barclays and Tour Championship. In addition, Jacob was a project manager for Total Turf on projects at Green Acres Country Club, Old Oaks, Consee, Stanwich and Blue Bell. Jacob was charged with shaping and grading all tee complexes for the BobbyWeed renovation at Green Acres. He is a graduate of the Penn State Golf Course Turfgrass Management program. Jake is coming back home to Delaware as he is a graduate of Conrad School of Science. Jake will be the North Course Assistant Superintendent and will start March 4th. Chris Cooke will graduate in May with a B.S. inTurfgrass Science from Penn State. His summer internships were completed at Merion (two different summers), Augusta National and Oakmont Country Club, where he had the opportunity to work the US Open. Chris will be the South Course Assistant Superintendent and will begin in early May. Jim Elliott has been hired as our Spray Superintendent and will coordinate our plant protection programs. He is the former superintendent of White Clay Creek and Brandywine Country Club. Jim has volunteered at various golf championships, including the US Women’s Open at Lancaster Country Club. Jim is a graduate of Rutgers University’s Professional Turf Management Program. He is married with a daughter at St. Mark’s High School. An important conduit for employees and future leaders is our Internship Program.Tailored to the individual’s needs, we are able to provide a dynamic learning environment for our students. We are happy to report two apprentices will be joining our forces this season. Matt Gillespie is currently attending Penn State via the World Campus, and will graduate this December with a B.S. in Turfgrass Science. He conducted an internship last year at Bidermann and began his golf career at Concord Country Club. Last year, Matt volunteered for the BMW Championship at Aronimink Golf Club. Cody Sander is attending Penn State’s two-year Golf Course Turfgrass Management program. During the winter break, Cody had an internship at Bonita Bay where he had the chance to experience each of the five golf courses at the club.

Prior to joining us in March, Cody will volunteer at the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill. From of all in the Grounds Department, we hope you have a great month of March! Warm Regards, Jonathan Urbanski D irector of G olf C ourses & G rounds

SQUASH & PADDLE

2019 SQUASH DOUBLES MEMBER GUEST will be held Friday, March 8th & Saturday, March 9th. One match on Friday and two on Saturday, with Champions Lunch on Saturday. Need a partner? Please contact Ed Chilton for help. Sign up with the Racquet Shop at [email protected]. Deadline is Friday, March 1st. THE THIRD JUNIOR GRAND PRIX of the year will be held Saturday, March 9th from 9:00 am -11:30 am.There will be an 11 and Under division as well as an 9 and Under Division. The tournament is basic and meant as an opportunity to have juniors get some competitive matches in a short amount of time. Each player will also learn to referee. Please sign up with the Racquet Shop at [email protected]. The three elements of a quality rail (a ball hit long the wall) are tight, height and depth. And it is best in that order. Regardless of how high or deep your rail is, the tightness of the rail can limit your opponent’s options and make it easier to defend or attack the next shot. Good height allows you time to recover into proper court position and can keep your opponent defensive. Depth will help to keep your rival in the back of the court which doesn’t allow them to be on the offensive. Of course, if you can apply all three elements to the rail, you will be well on your way to victory. SQUASH SINGLES & DOUBLES TIP

FITNESS CENTER

ATHLETICISM We often hear that someone is athletic, but what does that mean? If they dress in athletic clothes, does that mean they are athletic? If they play a sport, does that make them athletic? Athleticism is the ability to repeatedly perform a broad range of movement skills with style, precision and confidence in a variety of environments, which requires competent levels of strength, power, speed, agility, balance, coordination and energy. In other words, athleticism is a combination of motor skill mastery and fitness that can be demonstrated across sports.

ONE HOUR PERSONAL TRAINING SESSIONS OR FITNESS PROFILE Individual: $67 Package of 5: $310 ($62/hour) Package of 10: $570 ($57/hour) GROUP PERSONAL FITNESS SESSIONS 2 people: $40/person 3 people: $30/person 4 people: $25/person 5 or more people: $20/person

So, it is not enough to focus only on sport-specific skill development, as it does not necessarily develop overall athleticism! This is why we see athletes that specialize in only one sport tend to get injured more frequently as they do not have the broad range of movement competence and the requisite strength necessary to perform multiple skills. Focus on development of only one or two types of fitness (only aerobic training, for example) also reduces the likelihood of optimal health. You are only as strong as your weakest link, so you may have one fitness aspect or more to include in your athletic improvement program. Sport coaches focus on developing sport specific skills while strength coaches focus on developing athleticism. Both are important for members overall fitness and wellbeing. If you are unsure how best to develop your athleticism, please stop by the Fitness Center for more information.

MASSAGE Tracy, Susan, Vicki, and Ryan have set aside available hours each week but request at least twenty-four hours advance notice, as they are not onsite staff. Some time slots are already filled; other hours may be available.
