A Year of Growth

2017 was a great year. It was a time of growth, both professionally and personally. In my 33 years as a Chiropractor, I’ve come to enjoy the longstanding bonds of friendship and trust that I’ve fostered with my patients. It’s a feeling I didn’t expect when I started out as a young hotshot all those years ago. The ability to help people overcome their pain and physical challenges always felt rewarding. But as time winds onward, I have found even deeper satisfaction in watching the long-term progress of current and former patients. Seeing their growth and resilience is nothing short of inspiring, and the entire staff and I are humbled to have been part of the process. That’s why, last year, we committed ourselves to upping our capacity to help people. We put on our hard hats, rolled up our sleeves, and expanded our physical therapy area. Of course, I can’t talk about 2017 without talking about my lovely wife, Dianna. Since we met in that gym over eight years ago, she has become my confidant, my hiking partner, and my best friend. Getting married last May was one of the happiest moments of my life, and every day since has been an adventure. Make Reading a Family Resolution

Every parent wants to see their child do well in school, and there’s one fun activity that benefits students of all ages: reading. In a world with so much stimulation, however, it can be difficult to motivate kids to put down a screen and pick up a book. New Year’s resolutions are the perfect opportunity to make reading a priority. Here are a few tips to make 2018 the year your kids become bookworms. Make It a Family Resolution There’s no better motivator than solidarity! Plus, we’re guessing everyone in your household could stand to read a little more. You don’t have to read the same books or set identical goals, but it’s a lot more fun when everyone participates. Schedule weekly reading discussions so everyone can share the cool stories they’ve read. Stack your completed books in your house somewhere as a monument to all the knowledge your family has gained. Set Reward Milestones Positive reinforcement will propel your kids to keep reading long after the calendars have turned. For a certain number of books completed or hours spent reading, offer them a prize. You can even create a big end goal to really cement those reading habits. Better yet, set a combined goal that the entire family can work toward. Don’t be afraid to pull out all the stops. If your kids know that reading one book per week through June means an extra-special summer vacation, their enthusiasm won’t wane come spring. PHYSICAL THERAPISTS HAVE ADVANCED DEGREES Often, people are surprised to learn that practicing physical therapy takes many years of schooling. This is because, 30 years ago, it was possible to run a therapy practice armed only with a bachelor’s degree. Since then, the science has expanded significantly, requiring a 3-year doctoral program. Even after earning your advanced degree in physical therapy, you must pass a medical board exam before you’re allowed to practice. Bodies are complex systems, and treating them effectively takes years of study. 3 MISUNDERSTOOD FACTS ABOUT PHYSICAL THERAPY YOU DON’T NEED TO SEE A DOCTOR BEFORE SEEKING PHYSICAL THERAPY It’s a common misconception that physical therapy can only be prescribed by a medical doctor. In most states, including New Jersey, you can seek out a therapy specialist on your own, without having to schedule a medical consultation. If you know your physical impediment can be treated with physical therapy, this can save you time and money.

Use Reading Apps Goodreads is a social network for bibliophiles. You can find

recommendations, share ratings, and create lists of both completed and to-be-read books. Users also create reading lists based on topic, genre, decade, and more. With over 2 billion books added, you’ll never run out of inspiration. Biblionasium offers the same services, but it’s designed specifically for children. Talk to other parents and create a network of friends and classmates. After all, nothing is cooler to a kid than what their friends are doing. Avid readers tend to do better academically from kindergarten through college. In fact, a study from the Journal of Education and Practice found that reading comprehension predicted success in other subjects more than any other factor. If you want to see improved report cards, make a reading resolution for your entire household.

Whichever you visit first, you can rest assured you will get the treatment that is right for you. PHYSICAL THERAPY TREATS MORE THAN YOU’D THINK When most folks think of physical therapy, they think of sports injuries, pulled muscles, or rehabilitation. While these are all correct, the list of ailments that can be treated is far longer. These include conditions that many patients believe they just have to live with, like vertigo. Opioids vs. Therapy KNOW YOUR OPTIONS

According to the Centers for Disease Control, our nation is in the midst of a painkiller epidemic. The CDC found that the number of opioids prescribed by doctors has risen drastically, even though the amount of pain Americans are experiencing has not increased from previous decades. This overreliance on pain medication has contributed to higher rates of deadly opioid overdoses nationwide. Stricter guidelines have been put in place to curb overprescribing. Doctors are now discouraged from issuing prescription painkillers except for the most severe cases. But what other options are out there for those in need of relief? For many patients, physical therapy is a safe and effective alternative. So, when should you consider therapy over painkillers? First and foremost, if you do not wish to risk the side effects of opioids, explore your options in physical therapy. Painkillers are notoriously addictive and can cause depression as well as nasty withdrawal syndromes. If these factors outweigh the benefits of opioids in your mind, talk to your doctor about your therapy options.

If your pain is related to muscle, ligament, or even bone problems, the CDC finds physical therapy exercise to be a highly effective treatment. This is because these exercises are designed to do more than simply manage your pain. While opioids mask your discomfort, therapy often addresses the root cause. This is why it’s important to use therapy to confront chronic pain. Any discomfort that persists longer than 90 days is considered chronic, meaning it likely won’t go away on its own. Addressing chronic pain with opioids often entails sustained use of drugs, which increases the likelihood of developing a dependency. Therapeutic exercises can treat and manage many forms of chronic pain safely. If you or a loved one has been prescribed an opioid to address pain, talk to your doctor about physical therapy. Even when opioids are the best avenue, therapy exercises can aid in your recovery.

Pistachio Goji Berry Granola

Ingredients

1 cup rolled oats

¼ cup coconut flakes

½ teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1 tablespoon coconut oil

⅓ cup goji berries

3 tablespoons maple syrup

• ⅓ cup pistachios, chopped Directions 1. Heat a large skillet over low heat. Add oats in a thin layer and toast for 1–2 minutes. Add coconut oil and salt, then stir. Continue toasting for 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally. 2. Add maple syrup 1 tablespoon at a time; stir to coat. 3. Once oats are toasted, add pistachios, coconut flakes, and cinnamon. Cook slowly until pistachios and coconut flakes are toasted but not burned, about 5 minutes. 4. Remove from pan and stir in goji berries. 5. Let cool and enjoy as a snack or on top of your yogurt! When you go on a trip, whether it’s a quick jaunt to a neighboring town or a weeklong stay in an exotic locale, you interact with new people and cultures. It’s one thing to hear someone talk about the laid-back vibes of the West Coast, but you can’t really feel them for yourself until you’ve meandered through the redwoods or watched the sun set over Puget Sound. Now, imagine the positive effects this kind of cultural awakening could have on a young mind! While we tend to think about the worst-case scenarios and added stresses of traveling with kids, they stand to benefit as much, if not more, from travel as we do. You never know — your son or daughter may realize a passion for a subject that will one day become their career. As you’re plotting destinations for the new year, keep these life-changing possibilities in mind. 1. HISTORY WILL COME TO LIFE. Yes, your kids will read about World War II in school and take state capital quizzes. But in the end, nothing compares to firsthand experiences of culturally significant locations. Imagine showing a child the Galapagos Islands, where Darwin’s famous theory of evolution was conceived, or having the chance to talk about the beginnings of the Revolutionary War while strolling through Minute Man National Historical Park in Massachusetts. If you live in a state with a rich history, make it a point to visit one of the nearby museums. If you’re planning a vacation abroad, incorporate visits to historical sites. Take the opportunity to learn as a family!

2. THEY’LL PICK UP NEW SKILLS. In addition to learning about history, your child may discover a new skill. They may learn a bit of conversational Spanish during a trip to Mexico or they might play soccer with a group of children and realize they have a knack for it. By fostering a sense of healthy curiosity about new places, you’ll help your child feel confident enough to branch out of their comfort zone and make new friends at home and on the road. 3. THEY’LL UNDERSTAND COMPASSION. After a trip to Fiji, Lonely Planet Kids writer Patrick Kinsella found that, long after they returned, his eldest daughter continued to reflect on her experience. “It’s an eye- and mind-opening experience, especially for Ivy, who has never before considered that someone her age might not have a TV, let alone lack electricity,” Kinsella writes. “For many months afterward, Ivy talk[ed] about Po, imagining her Fijian friend’s life.”

Because they’re so open-minded, kids are the perfect sponges for new experiences. At the very least, they’ll be less likely to take what they have for granted, and they might even develop an expansive and exploratory worldview.
