WELCOME TO THE NEW NORMAL! HOW YOUR TOOTHBRUSH CAN HELP KEEP YOU SAFE

Hello, everyone! It feels like it’s been a lifetime since I wrote our last newsletter. In the time between then and now, the coronavirus pandemic has turned the world upside down. As I’m sure you know, we had to close our office for everyone’s safety, along with thousands of other local businesses this spring. We’ve been back since May 1, and I couldn’t be happier, but dentistry is a whole new world these days. If you haven’t been into the office in a while, you’ll notice some changes in how we operate when you come in for your next appointment. We’ve always prided ourselves on having a clean, sterile environment here at Marshall Orthodontics, but this spring we doubled down on our health and safety precautions. These are just a few of the new procedures we’ve put in place:

We have social distancing markers on the floor with arrows to indicate walking paths, and our staff takes social distancing measures whenever possible. We’re asking patients to take a short COVID-19 screening before their appointments. We’ve implemented a new parking lot check-in and appointment flow process.

Brush your teeth! Oral health is linked with overall health in a dozen different ways — there’s a reason the Dental Health Foundation calls oral health “a window to the rest of the body.” By maintaining good oral hygiene through brushing, flossing, and seeing your dentist regularly, you can keep the bad bacteria in your mouth under control. This will make your immune system better equipped to cope with illness because a buildup of bad bacteria can cause oral infections that do the opposite. Of course, simply brushing and flossing won’t keep you safe from the coronavirus. But every little thing you can do to keep yourself healthy is a step in the right direction — including taking care of your teeth, eating well, exercising, and getting plenty of sleep. I hope you and your loved ones are doing well and staying safe in these crazy times. I’m looking forward to seeing you soon!

The parking lot check-in process is really easy. When you arrive for your visit, please stay in your car, and our patient concierge will come to greet you. Then we will text you a link to our new parking lot check-in form. Once you fill it out and we’ve prepared your treatment chair, our patient concierge will escort you into the office. When you’re finished with your appointment you can schedule your next visit from your car before you leave. I’m confident these increased safety measures will further protect the health of our patients and staff. In addition to following the safety procedures at our office, you can do something else to protect your health and ward off any kind of infection or illness:

All of our clinical team members use protective equipment including masks and gloves. Patients are encouraged to come in alone; at most, they can bring in one other person. Our reception area is closed, and seating is only available in the treatment area.

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT: TALIA MEET OUR RESIDENT MOVIE BUFF!

Talia’s bubbly, outgoing personality is a beacon of light here at the Marshall Orthodontics office! Ever since she came on board as our records coordinator last September, she’s been keeping us going with her big smiles, positive attitude, and bottomless movie facts. With some creativity, Talia has been able to continue her favorite hobby while social distancing. “I’m always on Netflix and watching TV shows and stuff like that,” Talia says. “I definitely like going to movie theaters, too, but that’s not really an option right now. Thankfully, our drive-in theater is still open! It has been really fun to go with my family on weekends — you just pull up and watch from your car.” “The Invisible Man” starring Elisabeth Moss and Aldis Hodge was one of Talia’s favorite flicks this spring, but she’s always up for recommendations! Feel free to offer one next time you come in — you can’t miss Talia, especially if you remember meeting her on your first visit. She’s the one who handles new patients, helping with their records, pictures, and X-rays.

Technical College with a degree in dental assisting last August and jumped right into working for us, even though her shadowing experience was in pediatric dentistry. “I could have done kids’ dentistry or dental prosthetics like dentures, but I knew from doing rotations in school that orthodontics was my favorite for sure,” Talia says. “I think that’s because I had braces myself, so I know how important it is for people to feel confident in their smiles. I like being part of that journey!” Talia hopes to take her skills to the next level and is training to become an orthodontic assistant. She also loves dabbling in the other work we do. “I find myself always asking, ‘How can I help?’” Talia says. “I just enjoy jumping in and doing anything I can wherever I can, especially helping out in our lab with the full process of making retainers, or even doing emails and paperwork for the treatment coordinators and financial coordinator.”

Talia, from all of us at Marshall Orthodontics, thank you for all you do!

In addition to movies, Talia is passionate about orthodontics. She graduated from Greenville

INVISALIGN VS. BRACES QUIZ

Are you sick of dealing with crooked, spaced out, or otherwise imperfect teeth? If you’ve been looking into options to improve your smile, odds are you’ve come up against the quandary of which is better: Invisalign or braces? Well, the truth is that neither option is better than the other — they’re just different strokes for different folks. The option that is best for you depends on your smile, lifestyle, and other factors. The best way to choose is by consulting your orthodontist, but you can get an idea by taking the quiz below!

If you already have a beautiful smile, consider clipping this quiz out and passing it on to a friend or family member who could use it.

1. HOW LONG ARE YOU WILLING TO WAIT FOR RESULTS? A. Only 6–18 months — I’d like to be done as quickly as possible. B. Up to two years — I’ll wait as long as it takes! 2. ARE YOU WILLING TO MODIFY WHAT YOU EAT AND DRINK DURING TREATMENT? A. No, that would be too much of a hassle. B. Yes, that’s not a problem! 3. WOULD YOU BE EMBARRASSED IF YOUR TEETH ATTRACTED ATTENTION? A. Yes, I’d rather no one noticed I was getting treatment. B. Nope, I’d like to use my treatment to express my personality. 4. DO YOU PLAY CONTACT SPORTS? A. Yes, I’m in collisions regularly. B. No, I don’t. 5. WOULD YOU BE ABLE/WILLING TO PERFORM REGULAR MAINTENANCE? A. Yes, I’m confident I’ll be able to remember to maintain my appliance and have the time to do so. B. No, I’d rather not have to think about my treatment daily. It’s time to tally up your points! Count how many times you answered A and how many times you answered B. If you chose mostly A’s, Invisalign might be the treatment option for you. If you picked more B’s, braces could be your best bet! Of course, there are other nuances to consider that we couldn’t fit into this five-question quiz, so it’s still smart to get an opinion from Dr. Marshall. THE SECRET TO DELICIOUS GRILLED VEGGIES

INVISALIGN VS. BRACES QUIZ

ENJOY JULY WITH THESE FUN FACTS

WHAT DO JULIUS CAESAR AND BUFFALO WINGS HAVE IN COMMON? FUN FACTS ABOUT THE MONTH OF JULY

RED, WHITE, AND WHO?

Most Americans associate July with Independence Day and everything the holiday

Similar to the Declaration of Independence for the U.S., Canada’s Constitution Act of 1867, signed on July 1 of that year, marks the birth of Canada. The following year, Charles Monck, the 4th Viscount Monck and Canada’s first governor-general, signed a proclamation requesting that everyone in Canada celebrate their country’s independence on July 1. However, it wasn’t until 100 years later that the date officially became Canada Day. Most celebrations include fireworks and red and white attire, much like how Americans celebrate the Fourth of July.

entails, including traditional barbecue cuisine, fireworks, and summer vacations. However, in addition to the Fourth of July, this midsummer month has a rich history and offers fun opportunities for everyone to celebrate.

‘WHAT’S IN A NAME?’

You’ve likely heard of Julius Caesar, the famous Roman dictator and general known for changing the Roman Empire’s political structure, innovating war tactics, and eventually dying after a legendary assassination. But did you know that July, Caesar’s birth month, wasn’t always called that? It was initially named Quintilis , which means “fifth” in Latin, because it was the fifth month of the ancient Roman calendar. Shortly after Caesar’s death, the month of Quintilis was renamed July in his honor. Of course, Caesar’s legacy didn’t end there. Before he died, he implemented the Julian calendar, which he based off of the Egyptian solar calendar, and it remained in place for over 1,500 years until the Gregorian calendar was introduced in the 16th century.

GOT WINGS?

While chicken wings are a staple of Southern dining, they actually originated in upstate New York. In 1964, Teressa Bellissimo, co-owner of the Anchor Bar, started cooking leftover wings dipped in hot sauce for her son and his friends. After receiving enthusiastic feedback, Bellissimo put them on the menu. Over the next few years, the recipe’s popularity spread, and in 1977, former Buffalo mayor Stan Makowski declared July 29 to be National Chicken Wing Day. The reputation of the famous Buffalo wings continued to spread nationwide, and in the early ‘90s, wings became an international hit when McDonald’s, KFC, and Domino’s Pizza began selling them in the variety of flavors we know and love today.
