Golf Course Reminders As spring slowly creeps out of the long cold winter, golf season is getting into full swing. As we get started this season, our Arlington and Fairfax golf staff have a few reminders: • The no mow areas on the golf course are by design. They are not marked as hazards so any ball that enters a no mow area and is not found is a Lost Ball. While playing your round, if you stroke a ball into the no mow areas, please play a Provisional Ball to help with play pace. • Though the grass in the no mow areas is shorter during the spring, it is not intended for golf cart traffic. You may enter now mow areas in search of a ball, but please DO NOT drive golf carts into these areas. • Please observe the golf cart rules for the day. Every effort will be made to maintain the 90º cart rule as often as possible. However, when carts are restricted to paths, please keep all wheels on the paths. • The fairways at Arlington are Patriot Bermuda grass. When taking a divot please fill the divot with sand. There is no need to replace the divot as it will die. In a few days, the grass will fill-in. • Please be sure to repair your ball marks on the green as a couple others at the same time. A properly repaired ball mark will keep our greens looking spectacular all season.

2 ANCC NEWSLETTER MAY 2016

Golf

As the 2016 golf season gets underway, the Handicap Committee reminds all players that in order to maintain the integrity of our handicap system, they should post every round played, except when playing alone (new beginning January 2016). Scores should be posted for any format, even when you pick up without holing out or when you skip holes. This includes playing less than a full 9 or 18 holes. If a player does not hole out, he should assign himself the score for that hole that he would have most likely have achieved, or, if he skips a hole, his handicapped score for that hole. Guidelines that detail how to post rounds are posted in the golf section of the website. We also remind players that the Handicap Committee monitors the handicap system and has imposed handicap penalties when players fail to post regular play and/or tournament scores. For additional handicap information and the requirements for maintaining a handicap at ANCC, click here .

Unfortunately, the “calling cards” left by the geese have played havoc with the playability of some greens and fairways and caused health concerns. As the result, over the years the Club has tried a number of approaches to minimizing the goose population. To learn more about ANCC’s responses to the goose problems, click here . To contact the ANCC Foundation, visit anccfoundation.org or call 1-888-506-ANCC (2622). It is the first in a series of presentations on the history and legacy of ANCC. As the research progresses the Foundation will schedule additional events including the history of the Fairfax course, acquisitions & sales, tennis, fitness and swimming.
