Kirkliston enjoys an important strategic location on the old road between Edinburgh and Linlithgow, and was the site of Scotland’s first recorded parliament in 1235. At the heart of the parish, the Barony of Liston has been the property of the Knights Templar and the Archbishop of St. Andrews, while the English King Edward Longshanks made camp here before the Battle of Falkirk in 1298. Robert Burns stayed in what’s now the town’s oldest surviving house, where he inscribed a verse on a window pane. The historic centre of the town was designated a Conservation Area in 1977, and retains open green space on the banks of the River Almond.
