I’m happy to introduce MIYC’s first Blue Book, a collaboration of Best Practices, procedures and job descriptions for the Marco Island Yacht Club Bridge. Although some elements of this document will remain “evergreen” in years to come, the Blue Book is intended to be a living document and a reference that will be updated as new activities or procedures evolve.

B. Job Descriptions 1. COMMODORE

The Commodore commands all aspects of the Bridge and boating activities at MIYC. He or she is the Senior ranking Bridge Officer and is a member of the Board of Directors.

C OMMODORE D UTIES : § Oversee the planning and execution of all boating activities to ensure that they meet and exceed the goals of the Club and contribute to the overall Member Experience.

§ Plan and conduct monthly Bridge meetings as Chairperson.

§ Direct the development of a multi-year boating plan and work to coordinate the following year’s Annual Calendar of Events with the Chair of Member Events and the MIYC Secretary. § Attend Member Events meetings or designate a member of the Bridge to do so, to ensure communication and coordinated planning between the Bridge and other Club activities. § Monitor the performance of each member of the Bridge to ensure that they are appropriately exercising their roles and responsibilities. § Represent Club leadership inside and outside of the Club, serving as a Public Relations ambassador for MIYC. § Represent MIYC at other yacht and boating clubs when MIYC is invited to their key events such as Change of Watch.

§ Represent MIYC at all Commander Group forums and quarterly breakfasts.

§ Provide direction as necessary for FCYC matters.

§ Plan and conduct monthly Evening Colors Ceremonies during the Season.

§ Work with the incoming Commodore to plan and execute the Commodores Ball as specified in the Blue Book Section II-C. § Oversee all elements of the Blessing of the Fleet and provide direction to Member Events as described in Blue Book Section II-D.

§ Prepare monthly Anchor Lines column.

§ Lead development of the annual Bridge Budget and submit to the Finance Committee during the summer budget planning period. § Under certain circumstances, exercise powers of the Chairman of the Board as described in the MIYC Bylaws. § Identify, in coordination with the Vice Commodore and the Chairman of the Board, and nominate the Rear Commodore to the slate of candidates for election or appointment to the Board of Directors.

§ Serve as a member of the Boating committee.

§ Serve as an Advisor for the Bridge the following year after serving as Commodore.

§ Coordinate and secure photographs and name plates for new bridge officers. Assist dining room manager with installation of new photos and name plates.

O THER : The Commodore will secure a Bridge Uniform consisting of white hat, white shirt, white belt, white slacks, MIYC tie and white shoes. For the Annual Change of Watch Ceremony, a Navy Blazer, white shirt and tie will be the appropriate dress code. MIYC will provide necessary hat and shirt accessories. Q UALIFICATIONS : The candidate for the position must be a Full or Equity member of MIYC and have served as a Rear Commodore and Vice Commodore.

2. VICE COMMODORE

The Vice Commodore is the second ranking Bridge Officer, reporting to the Commodore. The Vice Commodore is in line to become Commodore the following year and is also a voting member of the Board of Directors. V ICE C OMMODORE D UTIES : § Oversee the mission and activities of the Boating Committee to ensure that they meet or exceed the goals set by the Club Strategic Plan. The Fleet Captains (Power and Sail) shall report to the Vice Commodore in their roles on the Boating Committee. § Plan and execute all Sunset Cruises, including publicity to Members, managing reservations and boat assignments, coordinating with captains, coordinating with the Club Dining Manager and coordinating boat slips with MIMA as described in Blue Book Section III-B

§ Assume the duties of the Commodore in his or her absence

§ The Vice Commodore is a member of the Board of Directors, the Bridge and Boating Committee and will attend all called meetings and render reports as required

§ Participate in all Colors and special ceremonies

§ Attend Boaters Night events and render reports as required

§ Prepare Vice Commodore column for Anchor Lines and other articles as required

§ Together with the Commodore and Chairman of the Board of Directors, select the new candidate for the incoming Rear Commodore position § Work with the Commodore, Member Events Committee, Operations and Accounting to plan and execute the Commodores Ball, as specified in the Blue Book Section II-C. § Work with the Commodore and Bridge Staff to develop a Bridge Budget for the following year § Coordinate the purchase of the traditional outgoing Commodore’s gift and solicit donations from the Bridge Staff.
