17th Annual Change of Watch & Commodore’s Ball

Past Commodore Don Mills

Marco Island Yacht Club held it’s Seventeenth Annual Change of Watch and Commodore’s Ball on January 19th. The festivities began in the Courtyard as the Bridge and Past Commodores gathered. Past Commodore Bob Winterhalter swore incoming Commodore Jeff Comeaux into office as Members, family and guests looked on. The American flag was lowered as onlookers sang God Bless

America, led by Chaplain Alan Sandlin and his wife Linda. The flag was folded and presented to the new Commodore. The celebrations continued upstairs in the Harbour Room with a lovely meal prepared by Chef Bob and his Staff. The room was transformed by Pam Dorr, Diana Winterhalter, Mary McKeown and Sandy Wallen. Dancing followed to the sounds of Classics II. Everyone got up to dance and even formed a conga line! Thanks to Kathleen Douglas for the many great photos from the evening.

Bob We have a big February coming up at MIYC, highlighted by our beautiful Blessing of the Fleet on Saturday the 16th. This colorful ceremony invoking good fortune for boaters is a tradition that goes back centuries and we are proud to uphold it on Marco Island. We invite all boating clubs on the island to participate with us. If you haven’t yet registered your boat to participate, I urge you to do so now. You can download the registration form here. Complete it and return it to Roy Hershberger at [email protected]. He’ll send you everything you need to know to participate. For Club Members who just want to watch the festivities, you can gather at the Burgee Bar or the Pointe (upstairs veranda) for great viewing, then stay for a delicious lunch and music by DJ Steve Reynolds. Make your lunch reservation by calling the Club at 239-394-0199. To properly respect the pomp and ceremony of this event, we are upgrading our recommended dress for the luncheon and suggesting that men wear jackets--preferably our Club jacket; ties are not necessary. You won’t want to miss this event. It’s a great time to bring guests as well! I’d also like to remind all boaters to get your boat certified if you haven’t already done so.

Jeff Comeaux Commodore

We will be requiring this for participation in Club events going forward. Safety is paramount when you’re on the water. Speaking of safety, I encourage you to sign up for the CPR class being held on Monday, February 11th. You never know when this knowledge could save a life! Contact Trevor Haworth at [email protected].

The Ship’s Store

STORE HISTORY :

• First housed in the Antaramian construction trailer along with the Dick Shanahan, marina slip sales rep and Dockmaster, Elmer Wheeler. Clubhouse didn't exist yet. • Inventory consisted of tee shirts, caps, burgees, coffee mugs and license plates. Today's inventory consists of over 110 different items. Classifications besides logo merchandise consists of coastal and handmade goods. • Logo changed because Antaramian owned the first one. • Club was originally MARCO ISLAND SAILING AND YACHT CLUB • Current store location (same) consisted of counter and back shelves that were designed by Jean Mathews, the past owner of True Value Hardware, now ACE. We now have moved down the hall using up every possible inch of space we can find! • BUYERS/COMMITTEE CHAIRS were in chronological order - Jean Mathews, Alice Jobe, Marsha Riss and Grace Pantano. VEGGIE AND COOKIE CARRYING SHOW MODELS in order of appearance, were Kathy Caruso, Don Deganutti, Kimberly Porter, Jon Holt, Dale DeFeo, Kathleen Douglas, and Henry Stanley. They stole the show - wonderfully entertaining while displaying Ship's Store merchandise from clothing to home goods. They did such a wonderful job that over $1,100.00 was sold that day and the next! Merchandise discounts and all profits going to the Club - what could be better? New inventory just in or just about to be - for Men - Camp and Tattersall Shirts and for Women 7 NEW styles in ICANTOO/Sun Moda tops in a variety of fabrics. A HUGE THANK YOU to Peggy Fraiser for her HEALTHY LIFESTYLE program, Chef Bob for a wonderful lunch (even liked the brussel sprouts), Pam and the Crew for a wonderful set-up, and of course our incredible Member models! Isn't it wonderful to be a Member of MIYC!!!!

It's Not Too Early to be Thinking about Mardi Gras! Jan. 6 th is Kings Day, also known as Twelfth Night. It marks the beginning of the "Carnival" season in New

Orleans which culminates on Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday). Mardi Gras is always the day before Ash Wednesday and the date varies each year with Easter. This year it is March 5, and the Club will be celebrating it that evening. Carnival Season is the period between Kings Day and Mardi Gras. It is a period of parties, masked balls, and of course parades. New Orleans will have over 50 parades featuring more than 1,000 floats, about 600 bands, and more than 140,000 participants. The first 2 were last night, the krewe of "Joan of Arc" marched through the French Quarter, and the "Funny Forty Fellows" paraded in street cars down St. Charles Ave. in costume and throwing beads and doubloons. Mark your calendar for Tuesday, March 5 at MIYC so you won't miss out on the fun. And be thinking of your costume so you will be part of the fun. Reservations - 239-394-0199

Aquafit classes will resume at the MIMA pool October 3 at 10am on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Don't miss this opportunity to enjoy water aerobics - a low-impact activity that takes the pressure off your bones, joints and muscles. Water also offers natural resistance, which can help strengthen your muscles and you can add resistance devices to burn more calories! Exercising in the pool provides the toning and cardiovascular benefits of exercise on dry land with less strain and stress plus it allows for a greater range of motion helping with flexibility and balance. And most importantly, it is enjoyable, fun! As with any other exercise routine, just be certain you get medical clearance from your health care provider before taking the plunge.

Port Captain

As the new Port Captain I have spent the past month getting up to speed with the requirements of the position and learning my way around the Marina. Living across from the Marina, it is very easy to see the boats coming in and welcome them to port. I am looking forward to getting to know people on more of a first name basis and helping to make them feel welcome to use our facilities during their stay.

With few slips available, and the transition from the holiday season, we had only 8 transient visitors in January. I expect to see more during the next few months. I want to give a BIG Thank You to past Port Captain Kathy Hershberger for all her help and information during this transition. MIYC Port Captain Jill Kiley

Chairman’s Report

Beware Phishing Attempts Though I already sent this note out as an email, I think it is worth repeating as we all need to be vigilant as hackers are always present. Computer hackers and phishers have discovered our Club! What is Phishing? A Phishing attack is a form of fraud using email that looks legitimate but leads you to a fake website for malicious purposes. The email may ask you respond to an urgent request, provide bank or credit card information, or provide a computer ID and password. I know many of you have been receiving emails that appear to be from a Club member or Club Officer asking you to pay an invoice amount or perhaps open a file. Do not respond to those emails. If you have a question, call the Club or the individual. Do not forward these emails , as you will be helping the hackers and phishers extend their reach. Following are 6 simple tips to spot phishing attacks. 1. An email has improper spelling or grammar. This could be misspelled word in the address or document or the grammar in the document is improper. When in doubt, delete the email and do not forward it. The domain address of the sender is different than the purported sender or sender’s organization. When the email appears to be from a trusted contact, but looks like the message is improper, you can double check the full email address. Often times it will be a different address (with small spelling changes or extended address information) than your trusted contact. The email urges you to take immediate action. If you get a request to take immediate action, it is probably a phishing attempt. Do not respond. Instead call the individual or go onto the website directly and confirm. The email indicates you have won a contest you did not enter. When you get an email that indicates you have won something or that is purported to be responding to a request you did not make…delete it. The email asks you to make a donation. Never respond to donation requests via email. Many organizations, such as the Red Cross, have reported fraudulent websites that when accessed will implant malware on your computer and steal your >Page 1 Page 2 Page 3 Page 4 Page 5 Page 6 Page 7 Page 8 Page 9 Page 10 Page 11 Page 12 Page 13 Page 14 Page 15 Page 16 Page 17 Page 18 Page 19 Page 20 Page 21 Page 22 Page 23 Page 24 Page 25 Page 26 Page 27 Page 28 Page 29 Page 30 Page 31 Page 32 Page 33 Page 34 Page 35 Page 36 Page 37 Page 38 Page 39 Page 40 Page 41 Page 42 Page 43 Page 44 Page 45 Page 46
