After the Pledge of Allegiance and a very moving rendition of our National Anthem, MIYC Chaplin Alan Sandlin gave an especially appropriate Blessing. A moment of silence to remember those that passed this last year was followed by Taps, then the canon was fired to call in the fleet. Nineteen boats paraded past the MIYC Bridge and Past Commodores, who greeted them in full MIYC uniform with a hand salute. As the boats introduced themselves, their crews returned the salute and music for the Captain’s military affiliation was played. The colorful proceedings were witnessed by 50 people on shore. The Marco Island Police Boat followed the last vessel in, and then a delicious and plentiful Saturday afternoon lunch was served up by Chef Bob. One hundred and thirty people enjoyed the meal and friendship on the Club’s upper deck overlooking the water, listening to the music provided by Steve Reynolds, on what could not have been a more perfect day.

February 16, 2019 was another beautiful day for the Marco Island Yacht Club’s annual Blessing of the Fleet. The sky was clear and the winds less than 5 knots, just enough to flutter all the flags decorating the boats. Prior to the ceremony getting underway, the Marco Island Fire Boat, the “J.W. Adams”, directed everyone’s attention to the water with a barrage of water from their fire hoses. Commodore Jeff Comeaux then got the proceedings underway by introducing Past Commodores M.A. Harlacker, and Frank Rinker on shore plus Bob Winterhaulter on board “Sea Fari II”, Lois Dixon on board “Tri-Fun”, Randy Harris on board “Grand Pelican” and Jim Marr on board “Blue Moon”. He also introduced the 2019 Bridge Members Ray Rosenberg on board “Irish Miss”, Pete Frazier on board “Grand Pelican”, Trevor Hayworth on board “Irish Miss”, Geoff Walker, Dwyn Von Bereghy, Jill Kiley, Alan Sandlin, and Chuck Downton on shore.

This year's Valentine's evening for Lovers of Fine Food and Music was very special. In addition to the superb dinner prepared by Chef, the 75 Members danced to the tunes of Joey Fiato, a South West Florida

well- known performer who kept us on our feet. Cocktails were served at the Point and the beautiful Marco evening made it a night worth remembering.

Dancing Under the Stars! On a gorgeous evening in February, Members and their guests gathered at the Burgee Bar for an evening of dining, dancing and celebrating! Not just because it was a lovely evening. Three Birthdays were also celebrated that night. Singer, Nevada led the group in singing Happy Birthday to Angela Holt, Irene Soden and the Marr’s friend, Nancy Brown. Chef Bob and his Staff served up a delicious meal and as always, Pam and the Crew did their best to make sure everyone had a wonderful time. And the new Fire Pits really added a nice touch!

Although it's been said that this year's game was not nearly as exciting as those in the past, you could not tell by the laughter at the MIYC. Some 54 Members were hootin' and hollerin' as the Patriots pulled off another victory. Chef's buffet dinner was something to cheer about, too.

Chairman’s Report

Club attributes as having a friendly and fun membership environment. But the camaraderie and friendships gained on these cruises through shared experiences and activities really cements the bond between our Members. And that is what makes our Club a great place to

Ellie and I participated in the February extended cruise! The cruise included stops in Boca Grande, Venice and Legacy Harbor in Fort Myers. About half a dozen boats from the Club took part in at least a portion of the Cruise, with nearly 20 Club members participating at some point along the way. The opportunity for Full and Equity members to participate in the Club’s ‘on water’ events is one of the key benefits we communicate to our prospective members. However, it is sometimes hard to describe why these ‘on water’ activities are so important to our membership. Being a part of the February cruise was a good refresher why Ellie and I enjoy these Club events so much! For those of you who have not been on an extended cruise for a while (or never experienced it), let me try to describe why it is such an important part of our overall Club’s membership experience. You do not need a boat to participate. We try to schedule cruises so that guests riding on boats can stay in hotels near the marinas we visit, or can meet up with us by arriving by car. Our Cruise Captains do an extraordinary job putting together itineraries that make the time spent at the various marinas filled with excursions and different activities that one can only enjoy from a cruise-based travel plan. And, the opportunity to see more of Florida’s ‘waterfront’ through the cruise stops is truly unique. But, I think the most valuable benefit is the ability to develop a much deeper relationship with the Members making the trip. We often describe one of our best

belong. We certainly have a great calendar of events (Thank you Angela Holt and the Member Events Committee!) And Friday Night Happy Hour is a great time to connect with friends at the Club. And, without a doubt, the Club is one of the best dining venues on the island. (Thank you, Chef Bob and the dining Staff!) But the deeper relationships built on Extended Cruises adds to a shared experience that enhances the benefits of Membership and Membership experience for all who participate in these Extended Cruises. I encourage you to find time to participate in one or more of our ‘on water’ events. Elsewhere in the Anchor Lines, we provide calendars and other information about upcoming cruises. MIYC Extended Cruise The Florida Loop - Thru the Ditch and Okeechobee March 13 – 20 The Short version March 13 – 30 The Long Version It has been a number of years since this cruise has been offered by our Club and now, we will do it again. It starts at Legacy Harbour in Ft Myers, goes through the Caloosahatchee to Clewiston, across lake Okeechobee and on to Stuart FL. The longer version continues South on the Intracoastal to Palm Beach, Ft Lauderdale, Key Biscayne, Islamorada and ends up in Marathon at Faro Blanco. Stay as long as you want and then return to Marco Island. Because we need to reserve slips along the way I must have confirmations to me ASAP. Please send me your interest and boat information. MIYC Extended Cruise to Boca Grande - Venice - Old Downtown Ft. Myers

By Peggy Frazier Meet..Eat....Laugh...Talk...Smile..Learn...We had an amazing adventure! While most of the boats in the Midwest and Eastern USA are fast asleep, tucked into bed for the winters with their blue tarps awaiting spring, the boats of the MIYC sit comfortably in the sun waiting for their next adventure! Our MIYC trip to Boca Grande, Venice, and Legacy Harbour February 20-26 i nc l uded participating boats captained by Treavor and Maureen Hayworth, Pat and Nancy McNally, Jim and Linda Marr, Bill and Sandy Wallen, Ray Rosenberg and Linda Spell, Pete and Peggy Frazier, and Dave and Ellie Everitt. Joining us as land cruisers were

Jeff and Carol Comeaux, Heri and Heidi Polzi, Morris and Nancy Margolis, and Jon and Angela Holt. With the Cruisers benefiting by navigation plans provided by Jim Marr the yachts had smooth seas for the cruise and safe and comfortable travel together. Irish Miss hosted a beautiful brunch in Boca Grande (thank you Ray and Linda). Each evening we had docktails on Seafari or Sea Esta and spectacular dinners at fabulous restaurants From exploring Boca on golf carts to shopping adventures in Venice and even water exercises we enjoyed traveling with MIYC friends; be sure to join us for the upcoming circumnavigation cruise! MIYC Mini Reef Program Helps Clean Our Canals We all love our Island Paradise and the beautiful waters we boat on. Doing what we can to keep our waters clean is a priority at Marco Island Yacht Club. That’s why we are promoting Ocean Habitats’ “Mini Reefs” to Members to be installed under your docks. We have three under our MIYC docks and dozens of Members are installing them, too. . Each reef establishes an ecosystem of aquatic life under the docks which mimics the environment normally found in the prop root system of mangrove trees. Once established, one reef can clean 30,000 gallons of water a day.

The tip of Tigertail is a Great Place to Dock Your Boat! This year we have a new opportunity to ride from the MIYC to the Beach Party on a chartered full service boat that includes lunch. Their unique docking ramp makes going ashore for the gathering and that special shell discovery easy for everyone. First come first served so reserve now! Our boating Members love to share! Participating Members will meet in the Marina for light refreshments and libations and then headset for a cruise in the Gulf, viewing a great sunset and with any luck, a “Green Flash”. Sunset Cruises are very popular and enjoyed by our full and associate Members. The January 23 rd Cruise was a huge success, with 55 members crewing, and the February 27 th Cruise was over the top with 57 participants. A big thank you to our Captains: Everitts, Fraziers, Haworths, Marrs, O’Briens, Sandlins, Walkers and Wallens. Everyone enjoyed the pre-sail docktails and nibbles, and the voyage out and about the river to view dolphins and, only occasionally, cloud-covered sunsets. Everyone had fun. Upon returning to the marina, we all raced to the Club for more libations and an exquisite dinner prepared by Chef and his Staff. What was exceptional for both of these cruises, and will be repeated for future cruises, was that we all selected our menu choices earlier in the day before arriving at the docks, and the Boat Captains called them in to the Club. The dinner service went as smooth as silk. Chef said, “We will continue this welcomed process in the future.” Our next Sunset Cruise is scheduled for March 27 th . An advance email blast will be sent out announcing the event. Make sure you respond to me if you would like to participate [email protected]. DO NOT respond to one of the boat Captains or the Club receptionist or your neighbor next door 😊 because you could be left waiting on the dock. Once we develop the list of participants, boat assignments will be made and the menu from Chef Bob will be distributed. If you would like to volunteer your boat, or prefer to crew on a certain boat, please let me know. We aim to please and will definitely have another great, safe and fun time. BTW – Your MIYC Boating Committee is working on the daytime, lunchtime, fun time and Extended Cruising schedule for 2020 and beyond. Mar ch wi l l be an awesome month, with our c i r cumnav i ga t i on mi d - month and two awesome Signature Events at the Club-- Mardi Gras on March 5 and a soulful Motown Party with the Greg Miller Band on March 23. There’s all that plus St. Pat’s, March Madness, and all our regular monthly activities

We have a terrific season underway, with wonderful activities on the water, at the Clubhouse and around the community! Our Blessing of the Fleet was a beautiful event with 19 boats participating and about 120 celebrating afterwards at a delicious luncheon at the Club featuring music by Steve Reynolds. Thanks to Roy Hershberger for coordinating this special event. A few days after the Blessing, many Members embarked on a fun-filled cruise to Boca Grande, Venice and the Legacy. The weather and seas were perfect and the camaraderie was even better! A special thanks goes out to Pete & Peggy Frazier for organizing the entire trip and for Jim Marr for navigation management during the journey. In addition, special thanks to the Rosenbergs, Everitts and Wallens for hosting a brunch and cocktail parties on their gorgeous vessels. Our Sunset cruise at the end of the month featured a cloudy evening, but the clouds made the spectacular pinks and corals spread even more dramatically across the sky. We have had some spectacular weather this month that brought out over 30 visiting vessels to the Marco Island Marina. All of which, were doing what the love and loving what they do right here in Paradise. A big shout out for the “MIYC Blessing of the Fleet”! Lunch & Learn with Chef Bob Chef Bob entertained over 30 members and guests on Thursday, February 7th in our second Lunch and Learn Event. Chef focused on the best way to prepare vegetables especially root vegetables like beets. He also shared his secrets for 'breading techniques.' The lovely luncheon also featured a glass of St. Supery Sauvignon Blanc, now a Club favorite! Thanks to Chef, a good time was had by all!

Anne Mauro is an Avian Ecologist at Rookery Bay Reserve. Anne hails from Ohio but has extensive Florida experience through her work with Ding Darling Refuge, Zoo Miami and Audubon Florida in various roles of shorebird and wading bird research. Anne will be presenting "Waterbirds of Rookery Bay”

After a fabulous start to the ‘Season’ in Marco, we are heading into the busiest month of events for the Marco Island Yacht Club. The Mardi Gras being held on Fat Tuesday, March 5, is a perfect way to lead the parade. We will have masks, and beads, and feathers and more beads. There will be music and strutting along with prizes. The dinner promises to be a true reflection of New Orleans. On March 11, don’t forget to sign up for the Beach Party. And, Wine and Dine, the finest of all dinner events follows on Wednesday, March 13. On Friday, March 15, we will have a St. Patty’s Day Happy Hour with a bean bag toss in the court yard. Chef will serve his famous corned beef and cabbage as a special menu item. You won’t want to miss Music Trivia on March 16 th . Here’s a chance for you music lyric lovers to dine, dance and in-between name that tune. So it will be a Saturday evening with a twist. March Madness is our basketball contest held in the court yard while cocktails are being served. This always proves to be a blast. The

women and men compete for prizes. The Signature Event

this year is Motown on Saturday, March 23. Greg Miller will join us with his 5 piece band and we will light up the Club. We will be dancing upstairs at the Pointe, downstairs at the Burgee and in the courtyard. Dress the part if you choose. Come as a diva, wear a mini, big hair and glitz. Look for the eblast with ‘attire’ suggestions. This will be an All-Club celebration. The first time we’ve tried it. Don’t miss it. Safety & Training Officer

A Neat Ship is a Safe Ship Improperly stowed gear can not only be unsightly but can damage your equipment and become a tripping hazard or worse. It isn’t fun to watch loose gear get caught in the wind and blown overboard. A cluttered deck is particularly dangerous in rough seas if loose gear is sliding around the deck. I hate reaching for a line that is fouled into a tangled mess. If you don’t have a line locker, it is easy to install a board with hooks on the inside of the gunwales to hang your coiled lines. Having those lines handy, life jackets at the ready, fire extinguishers mounted in a strategic spot, first aid kit close by in a dry location, and anchor line clear for instant use, are all little things that can help a rapid response to a developing situation. In the big picture of boating safety , properly stowed gear might seem a trivial issue, but I know of incidents that bring home its importance. In one case, a man and woman aboard a

40-foot pleasure craft were about to tow a smaller boat. While the woman was preparing the tow line, there was a slack length lying on the deck. She inadvertently stood amidst the loose line. As the towing boat started to move, this line coiled around her leg and lifted it into the air. This unfortunate deck hand took a severe fall and suffered an extreme injury. In another incident, three men were out for a day of fishing. At one point, they decided to move to another location. They pulled the anchor on board and left it lying on the bow above anchor locker. As the boat came up on plane, it bounced over a wave and the anchor slipped unnoticed back into the water. As the line played out, the anchor temporarily set on something. When the force of the boat caused the anchor to release, it catapulted forward toward the boat, and sank the shank of the anchor into the back of the head of an unlucky fisherman. Fortunately, the crew knew enough leave the anchor in the skull and radioed ahead. At the dock they were met by emergency medical teams and the injured man was air-lifted to a hospital where the anchor was safely removed. It is hard to imagine that these severe injuries would take place. Unfortunately, there are a myriad of potential accidents lurking amongst your poorly stowed equipment. Don’t be the one to discover a new bizarre story. Keep your gear stowed safely! Remember the old saying; “A place for everything, and everything in its place.” Lt. Bill Hempel, Marketing/Public relations Committee USPS. CPR/AED Training Fourteen boat captains and spouses attended the CPR/AED/First Aid training at Marco Fire-Rescue on Feb 12. Held by two Fire/EMS professionals, the three your course gave us the essential skills needed to provide first support in the minutes before the emergency services arrive. CPR techniques have been refined over the years, so it’s important for those who have had training in the past to re-certify as the next opportunity. And for most of us, this was the first time we had been exposed to AED operation, the costs of which have become affordable. It’s well worth considering having a portable model for afloat and home – available on Amazon for less than $2,000. Due to the popularity of this course, we have arranged another for April 25 th . I’m excited about our two successful Membership events in February. On February 6 th , we invited MIMA to join us at the Burgee Bar for cocktails before Boaters’ Night as we were again offering MIMA special memberships. The Blue Badges at the Burgee Bar means that is a MIMA Burgee Member. Please do welcome them to our Club. On February 7 th , the Membership Committee hosted a Happy Hour for our new Members as well as any Members who recruited new Members! Most of our Committee Chairs were available to answer any questions about being on a committee. Also, Members who recruited Members were encouraged to join us! We gave demonstrations on how to log on to the website and what great things are available to all membership levels. A good time was had by all! The Pineapple Table on a Friday Evening is being met with good reviews! As we get into season, if you receive a call to host or to sit at the table some Friday evening, please do! It is a great way to meet new members or members who you would like to know better! Remember a Pineapple means WELCOME!!! And welcome is what we are doing…welcoming many new Members to our Club! The key offshore will be fishing in 110-125 feet of water. Large Red Grouper (over 30 inches) can be caught in these areas. Backwater fishing will quickly improve as the shallow water warms up and the Trout, Snook and Redfish become more active. The Fishing Club is planning their 2 nd annual trip to Islamorada to fish for Tarpon. This year, we will likely add another day for Mahi fishing in the Gulf Stream. More to follow via eblast. For those who fished offshore, we found a good bite 45 miles out in 90-110 feet of water. Tom Morrison caught several Kingfish in the 48 inch range trolling, Jeff Comeaux caught several Barracuda in the 48 inch range and Geoff Walker had a good catch of Grouper. In the backwater area, Jill Kiley caught a 50+ lb. Black Drum near Coon Key on a jig tipped with shrimp.

FCYC Update

The Florida Council of Yacht Clubs The Florida Council of Yacht Clubs (FCYC), comprised of 36 yacht clubs including Marco Island, meets six times a year. The most recent meeting, which our Board Chairman and I attended, was at the St Petersburg Yacht Club. The next meeting in March will be at the Eau Gallie Yacht Club in Indian Harbour Beach. These meetings are open for all full and associate club members to attend. You can travel by land or take your boat. If you are interested or would like to learn more about FCYC, please contact me. As a note for your calendar, our Marco Island Club will be hosting the general meeting in May of 2021. FCYC hires government affairs lobbyists, Johnson and Blanton, to overwatch all legislative issues concerning boating and the waterways in Florida. Ahoy Members of MIYC. A big thank you to all for the great support shown throughout the early season here at the Club! Our membership numbers are strong and I have had the pleasure of meeting several trial members who were collectively seemed pleased with our food, service and their overall Club experience. Let’s remember to keep extending our hands, introducing ourselves and providing the warm welcome that trial members and new members alike have become accustomed to. This has been the most active season I have been a part of since joining your team in 2013. Membership participation coupled with a management team focused on creating a friendly atmosphere and delightful culinary experience, has been the key to our recent successes. Your Food and Beverage team realizes the challenges of the busy season and we are always trying to give the best food and service at all times. Please help us continue our growth by participating in our monthly Food and Beverage surveys. It really does make us stronger. Outside Banquet functions continue to spread the word about our “new and improved” clubhouse facilities, creating an atmosphere of good will that should turn into more MIYC members and continual growth in our outside catering business.
