ESTABLISH A GOOD WORKING RELATIONSHIP WITH A VETERINARIAN Dog BreeDing 101:

“Before planning a breeding, you should consult with a vet- erinarian to ask questions and get recommendations. it’s a good idea to connect with a veterinary reproduction special- ist or a veterinarian with a special interest in reproduction.” Kathy and eric Kelley of Timber rock Doodles in Bigfork, Minnesota, fell into breeding goldendoodles about six years ago. “Before we started breeding, we ended up with three male Doodles within eight months,” says Kathy Kelley. “The first one had horrible anxiety, so we got a second dog think- ing it would help the first one. The second had a neurologic condition affecting the way he walks. We adopted the third one, a lost dog, and he has seizures. “At the time, i was taking a business course and needed a project. i came up with the idea of starting a breeding

A basic lesson of dog breeding 101 is to get a veterinarian on your team. Breeders who partner with veterinarians have the assurance of knowing their questions will be addressed by an expert who shares their best interests and wants to help them optimize the health of their breeding animals and puppies. Purina veterinarian Callie Harris, DVM, knows firsthand from working at an emergency veterinary hospital the desperation breeders may experience when their pregnant dog needs an emergency cesarean section. Besides the challenges of find- ing an emergency veterinary hospital equipped to provide immediate care for a pregnant animal, the cost could be exorbitant. “it’s so important to be prepared so you don’t end up at an emergency clinic in the middle of the night,” Dr. Harris says.

These 3-week-old multigenerational Goldendoodle puppies were bred by Kathy and Eric Kelley of Timber Rock Doodles. Although the Kelleys recently moved to a home that is a four-hour drive from their veterinary reproduction specialist, they plan to continue going to the clinic because of the high-quality care they receive.

55 days to estimate the number of puppies. When we are close to the due date, we start monitoring the mother’s temperature for signs the puppies are coming. We call Dr. Smith with this information so she can look out for potential problems.” “really, it is a partnership between a breeder and veteri- narian,” reflects Megan Proctor of Cute Critter Kennel in

program so other families wouldn’t go through what we did with our dogs,” she continues. “our family veterinarian referred us to Dr. Fran Smith. We consulted her to learn what goes into a good breeding program.” Frances o. “Fran” Smith, DVM, PhD, DACT, is a board- certified veterinary theriogenologist — a veterinary repro-

duction specialist. She also is a breeder of Labrador retrievers. “The great majority of clients don’t know what a theriogenologist is,” Dr. Smith says. “it is a specialty in veterinary medicine that basically combines oB-gYn and urology in human medicine. There are less than 300 of us in the country.” At that get-acquainted appointment with Dr. Smith at her Smith Veterinary Hospital in Burnsville, Minnesota, the Kelleys learned about brucellosis and health and genetic testing prior to breeding. Dr. Smith explained the

Farmington, Missouri. “We want our veterinarians to work with us and sup- port us, yet it’s important that they have confidence and trust us as well.” After 20 years working with Missouri Foxtrotters and Tennessee Walking Horses, Proctor started breeding toy and small dog breeds, including designer breeds, seven years ago. Her sleek, modern kennel is clean and well- maintained, and providing constant care to breeding animals and puppies is her top priority. Proctor established a good working relationship with a local veterinarian when she began breeding dogs. However, after five years he sold the practice, and she started over with a new veterinarian. “it wasn’t easy in the beginning,” she says. “We had to get to know each other. i had to show the veterinarian my commitment to doing things the right way, and she had to show me she was receptive to working with me.”

TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL BREEDER-VETERINARIAN PARTNERSHIP • Before planning a breeding, consult a veterinarian to learn his or her recommendations to provide the best care possible for females and her puppies • Consider working with a veterinarian with a special interest in reproduction or a theriogenologist, a board-certi- fied veterinarian who specializes in reproduction • Successful breeder-veterinarian partnerships are built on mutual trust and respect • open communication with your veterinarian throughout breeding, pregnancy, and labor and delivery provides the best results

importance of a carefully timed breed- ing using progesterone testing, the gold standard for determining when a bitch is ovulating. They discussed neonatal puppy care and bringing the puppies in at 7 weeks of age to be examined and receive vaccines and fecal testing. “We wanted to learn what she wanted us to do in order to give us the best care possible,” says Kathy Kelley. “We started planning before our first breeding.” As president of the orthopedic Foundation for Animals, Dr. Smith takes health and genetic testing to heart. oFA is probably best known for its Canine Health information Center (CHiC) program in which parent clubs select testing for breed health clearances. Dr. Smith guided the Kelleys to test their breeding stock for healthy hips, elbows, eyes, and hearts, in addition to screening for genetic diseases that affect the foundation breeds behind goldendoodles, golden retrievers and Poodles. examples include testing for the bleeding dis- order von Willebrand’s disease and the progressive neurologic disease degenerative myelopathy. “Dr. Smith has helped us manage our breedings since our first one in 2016, an artificial insemination breeding,” Kathy Kelley says. “We have an ultrasound done 30 days after breed- ing to confirm the pregnancy, and radiographs are taken at

Dr. Harris of Purina agrees. “Building a good breeder- veterinarian relationship starts with the initial communication,” she says. “it’s important for breeders to trust their veteri- narian and their expertise related to the overall health care management and nutrition of dogs.” As Kathy Kelley says, “Breeders may not realize how important a good reproduction veterinarian can be for their program. Dr. Smith mentors us, and we value and listen to what she says. Her care and dedication to our program doesn’t stop at the end of the veterinary visit. We learn something with every litter from working with her.” Partnering with a veterinarian from the beginning helps to reduce the likelihood of needing emergency veterinary care for a pregnancy in the middle of the night. if you are in the business of breeding dogs, a best practice is to find a veterinarian who’s in the business of animal reproduction and who wants to help you raise a healthy litter of puppies.

Puppy Health

A guide to tube feeding puppies.

Have you ever had a weak puppy that won’t feed? Perhaps your dam had a cesarean section and the first feedings are going slowly. Or, on occasion, you may have a new mother who’s milk doesn’t let down soon enough. These are all instances when tube feeding can be a helpful solution. Tube feeding can be a vital tool for a kennel owner, which can result in saving puppies that may have been lost otherwise. PREPARE YOUR SUPPLIES Create a tube feeding kit, with supplies that are dedicated for and used solely when tube feeding. You will need: • Syringe with a catheter tip. • Soft clear silicon or red rubber feeding tube. The diameter should be between 8-14 French based on the size of the puppy (8 for smaller breeds, up to 14 for larger breeds). • Permanent magic marker. • Milk replacer. • Puppy scale. • Sterilized rectal thermometer with lubricant. TUBE FEEDING GUIDE Before getting started, create a well-lit and warm location where you can hold the puppy comfortably and all materials are within reach. Be attentive and take your time. Keeping calm during tube feeding is key.

Step 1: Pre-measure your tube. It is important to measure and mark your tube so you know how much needs to go into the puppy. On a safe surface, hold the pup with the neck extended. With the feeding tube alongside the puppy, hold the tapered end of the feeding tube even with the last rib of the largest pup to be fed. Stretch the rest of the tube straight towards the puppy’s head and using the permanent marker mark the tube where it reaches the tip of the pup’s nose. (See picture pg 13.) Step 2: Pre-warm your puppy and the formula. Take the puppy’s temperature rectally with a lubricated thermometer. Do not feed unless the rectal temperature is between

96° F and 99° F. If the puppy’s temperature is below 96° F, slowly and gently warm the puppy up before feeding. In addition, warm the milk replacer to lukewarm temperature in a warm water bath. Warming the milk replacer makes the feeding easier on the puppy’s stomach. For every ounce of the puppy’s weight, give 1 cc of milk replacer. This means that a 2 oz. puppy needs 2 cc of milk replacer. Next, attach the filled syringe to the feeding tube. Step 3: Pass with the tube to the left. When the feeding tube and syringe is prepared, plus the puppy is fully awake and warm, it is now time to insert the tube into the puppy. With the puppy

19

lying horizontally on its chest, cup one hand around the back of the puppy’s head so your index finger and thumb are located at the corners of the puppy’s mouth. With your other hand, gently pass the tube over the left side of the center of the puppy’s tongue, applying gentle pressure to slide the tube up to the mark. The puppy will usually make reflexive swallowing motions of the tube as it is inserted correctly and gently. If resistance is met, remove tube and start this step over. Step 4: Pass the tube with chin down. It can be tempting to tilt the puppy’s head up, but try to avoid this as it can open up the airway. Keeping the puppy’s chin tilted downward while gently passing the tube into the mouth helps avoid passing the tube into the wrong place. Once the tube is fed into the puppy’s mouth up to the mark, using your hand that is cupped around the back of the puppy’s head, hold the tube between your index and middle finger to keep the tube in place. Step 5: Pinch prior to feeding. Before feeding, firmly pinch the pup on the foot or tail. If you can hear the pup vocalizing, the tube placement is correct and you can proceed with feeding. If the tube is mistakenly in the trachea (aka windpipe), the pup will struggle but will not be able to make any sound. If you don’t hear any sound stop immediately, remove the tube and start over at the beginning of step 3.

Image source: Creative Commons. https://www.wikihow.com/ Tube-Feed-a-Puppy#/Image:Tube-Feed-a-Puppy-Step-6.jpg Step 1: Measuring the correct length of tube, along the side of the puppy.

Step 6: Plunge With your free hand, depress the plunger on the syringe, not too quickly, delivering the calculated amount of milk replacer. Stop sooner if milk is refluxed out of the mouth or nose. When the feeding is complete, kink a section of the tube (that is not inside the puppy) by folding it onto itself. This will prevent milk from being aspirated in to the puppy’s airway. Then pull out the tube. When feeding is complete, stimulate the puppy’s external anal and urinary orifices with a warm moistened cotton ball or washcloth to aid defecation and urination. Be sure to wash your syringe and feeding tube with hot soapy water and allow them to air dry until the next feeding. TROUBLESHOOTING Here are a few key things to watch out for when tube feeding: 1. Do not overfeed and over distend the abdomen. This will cause the puppy pain, causing it to struggle and cry.

2. If the puppy coughs or gags when you start to depress the plunger, withdraw the feeding tube and start over. You may have the tube in the trachea. If you continue to inject the formula, the animal may get aspiration pneumonia or suffocate. 3. If the puppy regurgitates or vomits the food, do not feed it again at that meal. If it occurs for two meals in a row, contact your veterinarian. Tube feeding can seem intimidating at first. Practice going through the motions before whelping to gain confidence. Be assured that you can successfully tube feed and save a puppy in need. Disclaimer: Always consult your veterinarian before trying any techniques with which you are not familiar. While tube feeding can be a lifesaver, it is not without risk to the puppy.

December 31, 2021 Dear Cavalry Group Member and Supporter,

In 2021 we had a very busy year ... • Successfully passed our Working Animal Protection Act in Oklahoma and Arkansas! • Successfully stopped unwarranted seizures.

• Successfully defended members in 52 cases of extortion and contract disputes against our dog breeder members. • Continued efforts to challenge local and state wide pet sale bans, new crippling regulations, and false brucellosis claims against Pet Shop Members. • Successfully defended our members against unfounded claims of alleged animal cruelty. • Successfully cleared members in legal actions brought on by over zealous local, state, and federal officials. • Successfully overturned arbitrary bans on exhibition of exotic animals and circus in 7 cities where no law or regulatory ban had passed! • Holding USDA accountable on implementing actions inconsistent with the law. • Testified in opposition of animal rights-driven legislation in several state legislatures and local city councils througout 2021. • Testified in favor of legislation supportive of animal ownership and animal enterprise. • Lobbied against the aggressive promotion of HSUS’ driven federal legislation in the 11 7th Congress. • Gave instructional webinars on topics pertinent to protecting animal enterprise and engaging in the legislative process. • Acted as spokesperson and passionate advocate on behalf of our members in print, radio, and television interviews while working to counter the false claims of the animal rights groups via media. • Continued to expose the public to the dangers of the animal rights movement via nationally syndicated radio programs, speaking engagements, and publications where we also promote the interests of our members and animal enterprise. The Legislative Battle is Ground Zero in Protecting Your Rights! We cannot fight back and WIN without your financial support! Our team is currently in full-swing in preparation for the 2022 state legislative sessions starting in just a few short days or weeks across the U.S. We will have our interactive legislative flash map up and running soon to help you track bills as they become introduced, state-by-state. Also, our Working Animal Protection Act is being filed in several states to go on offense to protect lawful animal enterprise. For those of you who are new members, this is a bill we crafted with Missouri State Representative Bryan Spencer 5 years ago in order to go on offense and protecting legal businesses utilizing “working animals” in agritourism and ranching including, but not limited to, entertainment, transportation, education, and exhibition! The intent is to stop attempts to ban lawful animal enterprise legislatively at the local level. Our efforts take resources! Can you commit today to support our efforts as we fight on your behalf?! Please consider a fully- tax-deductible donation to The Cavalry Group to ensure that we get off to a running start for 2022! If you haven’t renewed yet or signed up to be a Member, we need your support now! Imagine if we are successful in passing the Working Animal Protection Act in more states, and what a game changer that will be for animal owners and animal enterprise utilizing working animals! We are certain there will be plenty of bad legislation to kill in 2022. Please help us achieve these important goals! Warmest wishes for a happy and prosperous New Year! 27

WOOF FOR VETS

George Graham Vest (1830-1904) served as U.S. Senator from Missouri from 1879 to 1903 and became one of the leading orators and debaters of his time. This delightful speech is from an earlier period in his life when he practiced law in a small Missouri town. It was given in court while representing a man who sued another for the killing of his dog. During the trial, Vest ignored the testimony, and when his turn came to present a summation to the jury, he made the following speech and won the case. “Gentlemen of the Jury: The best friend a man has in the world may turn against him and become his enemy. His son or daughter that he has reared with loving care may prove ungrateful. Those who are nearest and dearest to us, those whom we trust with our happiness and our good name may become traitors to their faith. The money that a man has, he may lose. It flies away from him, perhaps when he needs it most. A man’s reputation may be sacrificed in a moment of ill-considered action. The people who are prone to fall on their knees to do us honor when success is with us, may be the first to throw the stone of malice when failure settles its cloud upon our heads. The one absolutely unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him, the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous is his dog. Aman’s dog stands by him in prosperity and in poverty, in health and in sickness. He will sleep on the cold ground, where the wintry winds blow and the snow drives fiercely, if only he may be near his master’s side. He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer. He will lick the wounds and sores that come in encounters with the roughness of the world. He guards the sleep of his pauper master as if he were a prince. When all other friends desert, he remains. When riches take wings, and reputation falls to pieces, he is as constant in his love as the sun in its journey through the heavens. If fortune drives the master forth, an outcast in the world, friendless and homeless, the faithful dog asks no higher privilege than that of accompanying him, to guard him against danger, to fight against his enemies. And when the last scene of all comes, and death takes his master in its embrace and his body is laid away in the cold ground, no matter if all other friends pursue their way, there by the graveside will the noble dog be found, his head between his paws, his eyes sad, but open in alert watchfulness, Veterans Day 2021: November 11, 2021 Release Number CB21-FF.10 United States Census Bureau Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary marking the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 making it an annual observance, and it became a national holiday in 1938. Then-President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed legislation in 1954 to change the name to Veterans Day to honor all those who served the country in war or peace. On this day, the nation honors military veterans with parades and other observances across the country and a ceremony faithful and true even in death.” George Graham Vest - c. 1855

AVeteran’s Email I am an Air Force retiree. I reached out to Woof for Vets our family has been looking for a puppy. I filled out the online form and was contacted within days of submitting the form. The customer service was outstanding. I informed them we have been looking for a Chocolate Lab. They explained they will get in touch with their breeders and will let me know. We were contacted and notified they have a male Chocolate lab. We brought Duke home and he has been a blessing to the family. By having Duke, he has been able to reduce my stress, anxiety and also has made us more active. Duke also provides us with unconditional love, loyalty, and companionship. Duke is now a part of our family. I am so thankful for Woof for Vets. They are caring people and go out of their way to help veterans. Thank you! David A Thank you note to Pamela and April Thank you for being a loyal Honda customer. It was so nice visiting with you and April. Training service dogs for vets is such a wonderful thing to do. My husband, daughter, and son have all served in the Marines and we thank you for your service to our vets. Please accept this small token toward your cause, may it help to bring happiness to a vet and his companion. Sincerely, Monique Branson Veterans Homecoming November 10, 2021, more than 2,000 veterans attended the two- hour free shows at the Branson Mansion Theatre. Woof for Vets was on first, and we presented Andrea, a veteran, with a beautiful male poodle to accompany her at work. Warren, a veteran, was given a beautiful Yorkie. Kevin Beauchamp and Ann Quinn represented the Missouri Pet Breeders Association and, on their behalf, presented a King Charles Cavalier to a young man who needed a companion to help him with a needed task. Woof for Vets is fortunate to be part of the show, and we send out a big shout- out to Dee Elledge, Retired Walmart Manager, for inviting us and making it all possible. The fun continued at The Shoppes at Branson Meadows; an annual hospitality event presented by Walmart a free luncheon to more than 3,100 veterans. At the same time, the Veterans Village Mess Hall was busy feeding lunch to more than 1,600 veterans. From November 5-11, more than 6,800 veterans attended the Branson Veterans Homecoming Event.

Woof for Vets As we close another chapter for Woof for Vet in the Year of our Lord, 2021, we take this opportunity to thank all Missouri Pet Breeders who provided canine pets for our veterans. We are pleased to say that during 2021, Pure Bred Breeders provided 62 dogs for 62 veterans. We officially started Woof for Vets in September 2016, and to date, we are very proud of purebred breeders who provided a total of 242 dogs to 242 veterans. “Veterans’ testimonies prove that Missouri Pet Breeders provide the “gift of life.” It’s true and, they do!

Woof for Vets wishes to express our sincere thanks to Ozark Lowes for allowing Pamela Dean, Canine Trainer, and April, her German Shepherd working together to teach veterans how to train their dogs. Her services are free for veterans, and if you prefer one- on-one training, her cost is very reasonable. Come and join the fun at Ozark Lowes on Saturday mornings. I first started with Ozark Lowes by taking my German Shepherd, April, every day to train her to be my service dog. When I became involved with Woof for Vets, I talked to Lowes, and they quickly agreed to let us use their facility to hold dog training classes for our veterans. They even give the dogs treats; they have been so wonderful. Over the past five years, we have trained numerous dogs to become service dogs to help our veterans. We thank you,

and our veterans thank you. By Pamela Dean and April

Canine Flu Symptoms, Treatment and Prevention

doggie daycares, boarding facilities, pet stores, or kennels are at a higher risk of obtaining the disease. They can also become infected at the groomer, dog park, veterinary clinic, or a dog show. Dog Flu Symptoms Although the severity of clinical signs can vary, the leading symptoms include sneezing, eye and nasal discharge and coughing. Other symptoms may include a low-grade fever, loss of appetite, and fatigue. H3N2 can lead to severe secondary pneumonia which can cause extremely sick dogs and potential fatalities. Canine Influenza Treatment Dogs infected with the virus should be immediately separated from other dogs to stop the virus from spreading further. Most dogs take two to four weeks to recover but, in the case of H3N2, it is important to keep them quarantined until after the shedding period of 28 days. There is no specific cure or treatment for the virus, so dog flu treatment is focused on general supportive care and alleviating the symptoms. Treatment often involves preventing or controlling secondary bacterial infections with antibiotics while the disease runs its course and giving intravenous fluids if the dog is dehydrated. It is important to clean and disinfect food and water bowls and equipment. For these items, stainless steel is ideal instead of plastic because scratched plastic is hard to fully disinfect. You should also regularly wash your hands and use hand sanitizer to prevent spreading the disease to other dogs. Similar to a parvovirus outbreak, having the right disinfectant is crucial. The disinfectant needs to penetrate the virus and not just sterilize the surface. Virkon and Oxine will penetrate organic matter and kill the virus. Using paper towels rather than cloths when wiping down hard surfaces and disinfecting clothing or wearing disposable gowns when working with the dogs is recommended. Canine Influenza Prevention Because there is no treatment for canine flu, preventing the infection through vaccination is key. The Nobivac Canine Flu H3N8 Vaccine is the first licensed vaccine to protect dogs against the H3N8 strain of canine influenza. To cover both strains of the canine flu, a bivalent vaccine is available to help control both canine influenza H3N8 and H3N2. If a dog is exposed to the flu, the vaccine significantly reduces the clinical signs, severity, and spread of the infection by reducing viral shedding to other dogs. Annual re- vaccination with a single dose is recommended. In addition to vaccinating, a probiotic like Doc Roy’s® GI Synbiotics or D.E.S Health-Gard will help prevent the flu. A probiotic will help by outcompeting any bad bacteria or viruses that are ingested and prevent them from causing disease. It also helps boost the immune system and maintain overall health. Many kennels and boarding facilities strive to prevent viral diseases by keeping immunity high and virus levels low. Cleaning and disinfection is key to keeping virus numbers low in a facility. Even if the virus enters the facility, the disease spread will be limited if the dog’s immunity is higher than virus numbers.

The canine flu or canine influenza virus is a highly contagious disease that causes a respiratory infection in dogs. Because canine flu is a relatively new virus, most dogs are naïve to the virus and have not built up immunity against it, so they will become infected if exposed. Although most dogs will only have a mild disease course, up to 20 percent of dogs may develop a more severe form of the infection with a high fever and pneumonia. Canine Flu Strains There are two major strains of the canine flu, H3N8 and H3N2. The good news is neither of these strains is that hard to kill in the environment, especially compared to parvovirus. Any disinfectant that that is effective against parvovirus will also eliminate influenza from the environment. The biggest risk is if a dog comes in direct contact with another dog that is shedding the virus. Incubation and Shedding Periods When it comes to shedding periods for the two strains of canine flu, H3N8 sheds for one to four days, while H3N2 starts shedding 24 hours after exposure and then sheds for 28 days. This means dogs with H3N2 will need to be quarantined for longer periods of time. When dogs become exposed to the infection, most of them do not show clinical signs for approximately two to four days. Similarly, the peak shedding period (when dogs are most contagious) occurs one to four days after exposure. Because the peak shedding period and the incubation period of the virus overlap, infected dogs are most contagious before they even start showing clinical signs, contributing to the rapid spread of this virus. Canine Flu Transmission Canine flu spreads in the same way that the human flu spreads, which is through direct contact, aerosolized respiratory secretions (created by barking and coughing) and through contact with a contaminated surface. This infection can easily spread through coughing or sneezing, plus influenza viruses have been shown to live in dried mucus for several hours. The virus can travel up to 20 feet through the air in respiratory secretions from infected animals coughing or sneezing. Transmission of the virus can happen wherever dogs have contact with other dogs. Dogs in shelters, rescues, dog classes,
