03/16/2021 TUESDAY TEAM TALK

PAUL HILTZ UPDATE

We want to thank you for all your hard work and dedication as you care for our patients. We are listening, learning, and leading. Listening Leadership has been rounding over the last few months and we have listened. We thank you for sharing your thoughts and concerns, which have helped us make improvements and changes. Executive Leadership Rounds are comprised of our senior leadership team. Executive Leadership Rounds are held at both campuses weekly, rotating dayshift and nightshift so all staff are heard. Below are suggestions/requests that staff have brought to administration and executive leaders while doing our weekly rounds and what we are doing about it. You spoke, we listened. • You have requested to patch, repair, and paint dings in walls at both c ampuses, administration has approved Engineering to contract two people designated to North Campus and two people designated to Baker Campus to repair and retouch these cosmetic issues. • You have stated that the nurses station countertops at North Naples are peeling and damaged, we are currently finalizing construction bids for new countertops

• You requested to fix sinks in patient rooms at both campuses, the work order has been placed and is now fixed.

• New chairs were requested at the nurses station that are able to be wiped clean, a dministration approved to purchase 110 chairs for Baker C ampus and 146 chair for North Naples Campus. • The Respiratory Department at North Naples has been experiencing ongoing difficulty with the cisco cell phone freezing up and needing to be re-booted, Connected Managers and Directors with IT Director to resolve the ongoing issue. • You have reported that you can’t hear the Townhall Zoom Meetings at both campuses, IT approved to order 100 speakers and they will be installed in April.

PAUL HILTZ UPDATE

• You have requested placing a holder with masks at the hospital entrances for employees, this has been approved and ordered. Masks are available at skybridge North Naples. • You have requested considering 0930 and 2130 as best time to round, moving forward starting March 23, we will be rounding at 0930 and 2130.

We look forward to further dialogue as we continue to round and listen and we appreciate the open dialogue with NCH staff and physicians.

Learning Through the open dialogue NCH leadership is learning about your ideas, opinions and concerns. NCH, like all healthcare systems across the nation, has been significantly impacted by the pandemic. We look forward to further dialogue as we continue to round. Leading We continue to strive to implement positive benefit enhancements and quickly fill vacancies to stabilize our staffing. We are pleased that we can partner with staff and together come up with incentives that continue to make NCH a great place to work.

We are excited to share several positive benefit enhancements that will be put into place on May 9, 2021:

• Market Pay Increase – Effective with the pay period beginning May 9th, all employees who have not received a market increase for this fiscal year will receive a 5% market increase, excluding our executive team and our providers. Any employee whose previous market increase (from August 30, 2020 forward) was less than 5% will be given the additional amount up to 5%. Those who received a market increase of 5% already will not receive an additional increase. • $0 Insurance Premiums for Staff – Beginning this same pay period, NCH will no longer charge a bi-weekly premium for your medical insurance for regular full time (RFT) employees only who are in the RTW Plan. Regular part time employee premiums will be reduced by the RFT rate. While spouse rates will increase, deductions for child/children will remain the same at this time. Employees on the Basic Plan will remain the same. More information on the benefits changes and how you can convert from the Basic to the RTW plan will be communicated in the coming weeks. • PTO Cash Out – We have implemented a PTO Cash Out in July and December of this year at 100%. We are happy to announce that we will continue the 100% PTO cash out for any approved instance after this time for active employees. • Free Meal Punch Card – In March, we will begin to provide each employee a monthly, five-meal punch card. This is valued at $5.00 per meal for a breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

As always, thank you for everything you do for our patients and community. Have an idea? Send it to us at [email protected].

ABOVE & BEYOND

Above & Beyond Story to Share Sandy Hutchinson, OT has been working with a patient in outpatient rehab services since early January. During their time together, the patient shared with Sandy that she started a doctoral degree program in industrial and organizational psychology after the unexpected death of her son in 2016. She pursued this as a way to help her cope with her loss. It has taken the patient longer to complete her degree because during this time frame she was also diagnosed with cancer and had to undergo treatment. The patient just graduated after five years and the outpatient rehab team celebrated with a small gift of congratulations!

ABOVE & BEYOND

Thank you, 4th Floor North Naples, for going Above & Beyond

Often you meet people in the healthcare field that inspire you to work hard at being better. This particular patient inspired the entire team and many others who were involved in his care. this patient had been with us on the 4th floor since 10/15/2020. His journey began in Sept of 2020 with surgical procedures and a transfer to rehab. He had some health setbacks and was transferred to the 4th floor. We have watched him overcome many obstacles with his health and discharge planning. He became a part of our work family over the five months that he was with us.

Tyler Harris asked if we could do something upon his discharge, to show how much this patient inspired us. He suggested a personalized cane for him since he has progressed from being unable to sit up on his own in bed to walking with only a cane. The team ordered the cane and a flashlight to give to him upon discharge. A few days ago, the 4th floor therapy and case management team met him at the lobby on the floor as he was being discharged to say goodbye. They gave him the cane that was signed by the staff so that he does not forget us as he continues his forward progress with his health. This patient has made a lasting impression with his determination and spirit. He will be missed. Thank you, team, for going above and beyond in making this patient feel extra special! The Above & Beyond Bonus The Above & Beyond Bonus is an initiative to reward and recognize YOU …our superstar employees… for going above and beyond in providing exceptional patient care. Each month, one nurse and one non-nurse system wide will be selected to win a cash prize . This opportunity was made possible by a gift from a generous donor specifically earmarked to reward employees who provide outstanding patient care and compassion. To qualify, employees nominate their peers or themselves and write to us telling of how you or your coworker went above and beyond to provide an exceptional patient experience. The most compelling stories received are reviewed alongside the stories from the reimbursement program. The top stories are then put to a vote where all of YOU can decide on which two will win a $1,000 bonus ! You heard right - $1,000 will be given away each month to two employees throughout the system! All you need to do for your chance at any of those prizes is simply do what you do best and provide an exceptional patient experience and tell us about it. Formal nomination forms can be submitted by any employee using the NCH Way. Entries close on the last day of each month. A survey link will be sent to all staff with the top 3 stories in each category for YOU to cast your vote. Click HERE to submit nomination.

NCH Celebrates Certified Nurses Day

NCH is proud to celebrate Certified Nurses Day on Friday, March 19 by honoring Board- Certified nurses on our staff. Board certification of nurses plays an increasingly important role in the assurance of high standards of care for patients and their loved ones. Nursing, like health care in general, has become increasingly complex. While a registered nurse (RN) license provides entry to general nursing practice, the knowledge-intensive requirements of modern nursing require extensive education, as well as a strong personal commitment to excellence by the nurse.

NCH Healthcare System encourages national board certification for all its nurses. There are many nursing certification specialties, such as medical-surgical, pediatric, pain management, cardiac vascular, oncology, hospice, case management, emergency nursing, critical care, and many others. Many nursing certification bodies exist to serve the full range of specialized nursing care offered in the contemporary healthcare system; national nurse-certifying bodies should be accredited by the Accreditation Board for Specialty Nursing Certification (ABSNC) or the National Organization for Competence Assurance (NOCA). Please join NCH and the nation’s national nursing certification organizations in honoring the hardworking, dedicated nurses for their professionalism and a job well done. Thank you to our nurses for their professionalism, leadership, and commitment to excellence in patient care.

Regulatory Readiness

NCH is now in our Joint Commission triannual re-accreditation survey window. A full team of surveyors may arrive anytime for a full accreditation survey. Goal: Reduce the risk for suicide • Identification of individuals at risk for suicide while under the care of or following discharge from a health care organization is an important step in protecting these at-risk individuals. • The organization implements procedures to mitigate the risk of suicide for patients at high risk for suicide such as one-to-one monitoring, removing objects that pose a risk for self-harm if they can be removed without adversely affecting the patient’s medical care, assessing objects brought into a room by visitors, and using safe transportation procedures when moving patients to other parts of the hospital. • The Joint Commission requires screening for suicidal ideation using a validated tool starting at age 12 and above.

• Use an evidence-based process to conduct a suicide assessment of patients who have screened positive for suicidal ideation. The assessment directly asks about suicidal ideation, plan, intent, suicidal or self-harm behaviors, risk factors, and protective factors. • Document the patients’ overall risk for suicide and the plan to mitigate the risk for suicide. • Follow written policies and procedures for counseling and follow-up care at discharge for patients identified as at risk for suicide.

Survey Savvy Tips: Fire Safety Reminders • Do not sit in chairs while working at a COW/WO while in hallways. • Know where your exits, fire extinguishers and pull stations are located.

• Never place equipment in front of a medical gas panel, fire pull station, fire extinguisher, electrical or exit egress. • Never prop doors open or closed – doors contain smoke in the case of fire and doors should open easily to 90 degrees for easy exit. • Keep O2 tanks in wire racks with no more than 12 per room. • Never store items within 18 inches of ceiling – this can block the sprinkling system in event of fire.

GOOD CATCH FOR SAFETY

Good Catch by 5 North Downtown: While reviewing the patient’s name and date of birth, the nurse noted that the patient’s armband had the wrong date of birth printed on it. The nurse corrected the date of birth and a new band was printed and placed on the patient. Verifying the patient’s name and date of birth is a key practice in patient safety. This was a Great Catch by 5 North.

GOOD CATCH FOR SAFETY

Lisa Boyko, physical therapist at Creekside OP Rehab, was treating a patient referred for low back pain. After two sessions, Lisa realized that the patient’s symptoms were not following a musculoskeletal pattern, so she spoke to the referring physician who agreed. The patient was sent for an MRI which found a destructive neoplasm in the patient’s sacrum. The patient is now being referred for the appropriate care due to the quick actions of Lisa and due to her extensive knowledge of both the physical therapy and medical aspects of care. Great catch!

Patient Safety Awareness Week Patient Safety Awareness Week is an annual recognition event intended to encourage everyone to learn more about healthcare safety. During this week, our hope is that together we continue to advance important discussions on our units and within our departments, and inspire action to improve the safety of our health care system — for both our patients and our staff. Why a Focus on Safety? Although there has been real progress made in patient safety over the past two decades, current estimates cite medical harm as a third leading cause of death worldwide, behind heart disease and cancer. Some studies suggest that as many as 400,000 deaths occur in the United States each year because of errors or preventable harm. This number of deaths equates to a city the size of Miami annually. Not every case of harm results in death, but they can have a long-term impact on a patient’s physical health, emotional health, financial well-being, or family relationships. Preventing harm in healthcare settings is our concern. Everyone interacts with a healthcare system at some point in their life and everyone has a role to play in advancing safe healthcare. As humans we make mistakes. The NCH Zero Harm Steering Committee has a commitment to patient safety and is continually working to improve this commitment. Over the coming months you will be hearing more about this important work being led by eight teams across the organization. Plus, we will be rolling out a new framework for us to advance our work in making NCH the safest place for patients to receive care and for our clinicians to provide care. In the interim, we ask that you continue to Speak Up for patient safety during this week and always Reach out to Diane Denny, NCH’s Executive Director for Quality and Patient Safety and Jeannie Kellogg, Director of Risk Management with any suggestions as we continue this journey together. If there is anything you would like to share in this newsletter, please email [email protected].
