Seven Oaks Book Club The Seven Oaks Book Club meets each month to discuss books on a reading list which is selected by mutual consent of the Book Club members. All members of SOCC are cordially invited to attend.

This month’s selection is … My Antonia by Willa Cather

Sunday, February 23rd at 2pm in the Grand Ballroom

My Ántonia is considered one of the most significant American novels of the twentieth century. A platform for commentary about women's rights, it weaves a story where romantic interests are ultimately bandied about by the uncontrolled changes that occur in people's lives. This final book of Cather's Prairie Trilogy is considered her greatest accomplishment.

HOW TO WIN YOUR MATCH!!

1. Look relaxed even when you’re not. Put your poker face on and look confident. Let your opponent see that you’re not nervous. 2. Pay attention to your opponent’s nerves. Try not to make it obvious, but keep an eye open for signs of nervousness from your opponent: shaking, can’t place the ball on a tee, etc. If you sense they are nervous, this should give you confidence and help you plan your strategy. 3. Give short putts or don’t. I’m not a big gamesmanship player but there are some players who will get rattled if you give them short putts and then suddenly don’t. There’s nothing wrong with trying to get under someone’s skin. 4. Know your opponents tendencies. Most of the time you’re going to be playing against someone for the first time. Try to gain a little insight on their weaknesses and their strengths. For instance, if they like to play fast and prefer to hit first, you can use that to your advantage. 5. Work with your partner! Always talk strategies over with your partner. Communicate and get your game plan straight and play to both of your strengths. If you like to hit first, SPEAK UP! If you like to hit putts, SPEAK UP! If your partner likes to be left alone; DON’T BOTHER THEM!

6. Try to get a partner who can putt under pressure. I know this is a tough one and often we do not get a chance to pick partners, but if you get a chance, pick a partner who can putt, especially under pressure. Match play is about pressure and it shows up in your putting. 7. Always expect your opponent to sink the next putt or chip. Never allow yourself to be let down mentally. Always remain positive throughout the match. Remember, “IT AIN’T OVER TIL IT’S OVER”! 8. Walk ahead of your opponent. I know this sounds silly, but I’ve done it a lot and it sends a subtle message that you are confident and you want to get your ball in the hole quickly. Players who aren’t feeling confident usually aren’t excited to play their next shot. 9. When you’re up, stay aggressive and try to increase your lead. If you’re four up, don’t start thinking that all you have to do is make some pars and bleed your opponent out. Instead, try to get five or six up and end the match. NEVER get comfortable with a lead. 10. Keep your head in the game! Don’t let the match play format, which you may have no experience with, distract you from what you have to do. Remember to hit one shot at a time and always stick to your routine.

With the new greens opening, here is a great article from the USGA on ball mark repair on putting greens. Remember, your ball mark is your responsibility as a player.

Repairing Ball Marks: 5 Things Every Golfer Should Know By USGA Green Section Staff JULY 9, 2018 As golfers, a small amount of our time and attention can go a long way in helping to maintain high-quality playing conditions on the courses we play. Repairing ball marks on the putting greens is an easy way to make a positive impact, but the importance of ball mark repair and the proper tools and technique are often misunderstood. Here are five things every golfer should know about repairing ball marks: 1. The proper technique for ball mark repair is easy and fast Insert the ball mark repair tool behind the ball mark and gently pull the top of the tool toward the center. Continue working around the ball mark, pulling the surrounding turf in toward the center of the indentation. Avoid using a lifting or twisting motion because this can damage turf roots. Once you have finished pulling turf in toward the center, gently tamp the area down with your putter to create a smooth, firm surface. 2. Unrepaired ball marks cause lasting problems Failing to repair a ball mark may seem like aminor oversight, but there are lasting consequences. Unrepaired ball marks can take weeks to heal, during which time they can cause balls to bounce off line. The damage to the putting surface is also an entry point for weeds that can cause serious problems. 3. Certain putting greens are more vulnerable to ball marks than others. Any putting green that typically receives high, lofted approach shots will be more susceptible to ball marks. The putting greens on par-3 holes are a perfect example. If you recognize that a putting green is prone to damage from ball marks, it is important to be mindful of repairing your own ball mark and a few unrepaired ones nearby. 4. Soft conditions mean more ball marks. When putting greens are wet or soft, ball marks will be more of an issue. This is just one of the reasons why superintendents work hard to promote firm playing conditions with aeration, topdressing and other maintenance practices. If excessive thatch accumulates beneath the putting surface, ball marks and other turf issues will be more problematic.

5. Almost any pointed tool can be used to successfully repair a ball mark. Many different tools have been created to repair ball marks, including single-pronged and fork-shaped tools. Almost any pointed tool, including a golf tee, can be used to effectively repair a ball mark. Using the proper technique is the key to success. Repairing ball marks is one of the easiest ways that golfers can help superintendents deliver high-quality playing conditions. After hitting a great shot onto the putting green, fixing your ball mark and a couple nearby is an excellent way to celebrate.

Cardio Tennis Mondays 6:30 - 7:30pm. $15 per class.

Junior Tennis

Cardio Tennis is a fun, sociable heart pumping fitness class on a tennis court, open to everyone, and no Tennis experience is needed! You can burn up to 700 per class with dynamic stretching, hitting lots of tennis balls and engaging in other cardio activity to energetic, motivating music! Call Jonni at 714-366-2985 to sign up. This is the best way to get in to tennis. If you don’t have a racquet or you feel your racquet is outdated, don’t worry, we have plenty of Demo racquets you can try out. Liveball Wednesdays 6:30 – 8pm & Thursdays 8 - 9:30am. $15 per person. This program is a fast moving, very intensive hitting and drilling course. The emphasis is on playing points and hitting ‘zillions’ of balls. Must have a USTA rating 3.5 and above. For Wednesdays call Jason at 661-717-4217 and Jonni at 714-366-2985 for Thursdays. Beginner Tennis Drills Wednesdays 9 – 10:30am.

Red Ball Future Stars Thursdays 4-5pm, ages 5-8 . This Quick start program uses fun games and drills to help develop good ball tracking skills.

Orange Ball Tuesday & Thursday 4-5:30pm, ages 7-10.

Players ready to play on a slightly larger court. The classes are designed to continue building athletic skills while learning or refining the skills necessary to serve, rally and score.

Green Ball Tuesday and Thursday 4-5:30pm, ages 7-10. Green ball is designed for beginner to

intermediate level players. We coach using a rally-based curriculum and focuses on scoring, serving and serve return with sound footwork. Yellow Ball Tuesday and Thursday 4-5:30pm, ages 11-18. On court drills will include point play, dead ball drills, fitness drills and mental toughness skills.

TENNIS TIP: I GET ASKED A LOT IF IT’S TOO LATE TO START TENNIS, OR HOW EARLY CAN I GET MY KIDS INVOLVED IN TENNIS. THERE REALLY IS NO AGE CUTOFF FOR PLAYING TENNIS. YOU CAN BEGIN AS A KID AT 5 YEARS OLD OR YOU CAN BEGIN LATER IN LIFE; YOU'LL ENJOY IT JUST AS MUCH. TENNIS IS A LOT LIKE GOLF WHEN YOU FIRST START PRACTICING/PLAYING. TO GET THE BEST RESULTS AND GET OVER THE BEGINNER HUMP, TRY TO PLAY 4 TIMES A WEEK FOR 2 MONTHS, THIS WILL GET THE WHEELS TURNING AND YOU WILL NEVER LOOK BACK. BESIDES, THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF PLAYING TENNIS ARE UNMATCHED!

PICKLEBALL TIP: IT’S A BAD FEELING WHEN THAT SHOT WHIZZES BETWEEN YOU AND YOUR PARTNER. IT'S EVEN WORSE WHEN IT’S ONE OF THOSE SLOW PICKLEBALLS, THAT KIND OF DRIBBLES BETWEEN YOU. MOST OF THE TIME, IT DOESN’T WORK TO HAVE BOTH PLAYERS CALLING BALLS. “MINE!” AND “MINE!” OR “YOURS!” AND “YOURS!” AT THE SAME TIME, PUTS YOU AND YOUR PARTNER BACK AT SQUARE ONE! BEFORE THE GAME STARTS YOU NEED TO DECIDE WHO WILL DO ALL THE TALKING ON THE COURT. THERE ARE ONLY A FEW WORDS I RECOMMEND TO SAY DURING THE GAME TO KEEP IT SIMPLE AND WITHOUT CONFUSION: “ME" OR "YOU”. WHEN THE BALL IS ABOUT TO GO OUT, YELL “NO” OR “BOUNCE IT”. MY FINAL PIECE OF ADVICE WHEN CALLING THE BALLS - “LISTEN!”.

10,000 Kettlebell Swing Challenge begins Monday, February 3rd! If you want to increase strength, lose inches, gain stamina this challenge is for you! The group will meet Monday-Friday at 1:00 pm at Grand Island Gym to do our determined amount of daily swings. If you can't meet with the group, you can still get into the challenge - call me at 661-205-8287 to find out how! Even in the chill of winter, our Walking Group is still going strong! Please join us on Tuesdays & Thursdays at 8am for an hour walk around the Grand Island neighborhood. No need to RSVP - just meet us at the Grand Island Gym with your walking shoes and a warm jacket!!!
