Doctoral Students in the House!!

For those of you that have been in to see us recently you may have noticed we have a doctoral student that has been treating with me. In fact, over the years we’ve had several. We usually take one each year for a 2-3 month time period. There are so many reasons why we take students... which is what I’d like to share with you now. At first I decided to teach students because I felt it was important to give back to the profession. Pay it forward

and help the next generation of physical therapists be the best they can be. I still believe that... but I soon realized that there was much more to it than that. I realized that this relationship between my clinic and the students was definitely a give and take relationship, not a give and give relationship that I may have thought it would be. While it’s true that having a student can add a little more work and stress (particularly in the beginning) within the practice, it can also energize and help evolve the practice

Tests were done to measure how well the people were doing compared to their initial visit, 4 weeks, 8 weeks and 1 year later. The results were very impressive showing the patients who had hands-on physical therapy, combined with specific exercises had significant improvements in their pain, mobility and function. In general, if you are suffering from osteoarthritis, especially of the back, hip or knee, physical therapy decreases the pain and stiffness of osteoarthritis and may delay or prevent the need for more invasive treatments, like injections or surgery. Are you suffering from back, knee or hip pain? You may have osteoarthritis in those joints. Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common chronic condition of the joints, affectingapproximately27millionAmericans.Although itoccurs inpeopleofallages, osteoarthritis is most common in people older than 65. With osteoarthritis, there is a breakdown in the cartilage covering the ends of bones which form the jointandallowmovement.Ascartilagewearsaway, thebonesbecome exposedand rubagainsteachother.Thebreakdownofcartilagealsoaffects theshape of the joint so that it no longer functions smoothly. In addition, the ligaments and tendons around the joint become stiff and the muscles that support the joint become weak. This leads to more painful rubbing of the joint surfaces. There are many studies and patient success stories promoting the effectiveness of physical therapy for osteoarthritis. Our expert physical therapists at Next Step Physical Therapy are trained in specialized hands-on therapy for patients suffering with osteoarthritis, obtaining fast pain relief and improved movement. In a recent study, 83 patients with osteoarthritis were divided to receive either hands- on physical therapy or a sugar pill that actually did nothing to help their pain without themknowing.Thegroup that receivedhands-on therapy, had therapy to theknee, low back, hip and ankle as required. They then performed a knee exercise program in the clinic and at home. The group taking the sugar pill had just low intensity ultrasound,

to become even better than what it was before.

treating patients what they do have is the latest techniques and research on how the profession is changing and improving. Like I said, this relationship goes both ways - I teach them and they teach me. It’s a wonderful way to stay on the cutting edge of the most current treatment techniques. Another benefit to having students is that they can challenge the way we do things. They ask questions, lots of questions, and it’s my job to have an answer. Sometimes while answering

tough questions about treatment or how we operate our clinic, it forces us to look at ourselves in the mirror and decide if our answer is really the right answer. This is a great way for us to continually test our physical therapy treatment and business models, ultimately leading to opportunities to make them better. Overall, I’ve always believed in teaching the next generation of physical therapists - I just never realized how much I’d get back in the process. I think I’ll keep doing it!

Students bring excitement and passion to the clinic. They want to learn as much as they can and they want to help everyone in any way possible. That energy and passion is contagious, and our patients, staff and myself can feel it and are affected by it in a great way. They motivate us to be as passionate about our work as they are (in case we forgot).

Here we are in July. Hope everyone is enjoying their summer and vacations! We’ve kept our nose to the grindstone here and are super excited to launch our rotator cuff workshop this month. We think it’s going to be ridiculously popular - we already know it’s extremely effective. If you’re having shoulder issues let us know - the workshop may be what you need. Besides that, Anna - my Doctoral student - and I have been working hard at getting people better and trying to stay cool (man do I love air conditioning). Talk to you next month. Chris Ostling

“Chris even helped me with balance which I’ll continue at home.” “Incredible recovery!! Before therapy I had pain on my left side of my back for approximately 6 weeks due to arthritis. Chris said come in for 4 weeks and I’d be fine. HE WAS RIGHT! My experience with his staff has been great. Chris even helped me with balance which I’ll continue at home.” -Joan H.
