WHAT I NEVER WOULD HAVE PREDICTED ABOUT COMMUNICATION AND THE ONE THING THAT'S BETTER ‘THE OLD-FASHIONED WAY’
Hey, friends. I like to share personal stories on this newsletter, and, honestly, as a twin, you’d probably think I’d have a ton of April Fools’ stories. The truth is that we didn’t make quite as much trouble as we should’ve! We’ve played tricks in the past, sure, but there are some things that stay in the proverbial Vegas, if you catch my drift … But, besides sibling mischief, there is one aspect of history that affects our everyday lives in intimate ways — communication. I’m a bit of a history buff, and I recently noticed that April is full of fascinating communication history facts. For example, if you lived in New York in April 1860, you’d know that the United States economy changed forever when the Pony Express opened, helping California become more intertwined with the rest of America. It was the first time in history that you could send a letter to the West coast of the United States in just 10 days! Of course, less than two years later, the telegraph is invented and kills the Pony Express into bankruptcy. (Coincidentally, Morse Code Day is on April 27, in honor of Samuel Morse’s birthday in 1791.) That’s like if cellphones were invented, and the iPhone came out the next day. But the glory wasn’t entirely short-lived — plenty of Americans still recognize the role and importance of the Pony Express, thanks to its romanticization in western movies. When I started my practice in 1994, I couldn’t have imagined the scale at which communication would change during my career. If you’re my age, you’ll remember this: During the advent of the Internet, we had to rely on phone lines to send and download >Page 1 Page 2 Page 3 Page 4
